This is Ola, the older sister who is trying to help her family. Crazy how, time and time again, fundraising posts get the least amount of notes. A random errant thought I had during the day will, on average, accumulate more notes than a fundraiser that I actually push for engagement. Why is that? In short, she has been saving and raising money to move out of her family's house, getting to a safe space in a different state after she had a near un-closeting scare back in April. Yesterday, however, she got into a car accident. She's okay physically, but all of those savings are going towards repairs. Sometimes self-care is, actually, NOT getting onto the computer and little treats and watching youtube videos. Sometimes those things are self-care, but sometimes they're also avoidant behaviors.

Sometimes self care is waking up and just. Fucking getting in the car. And driving to the bank. And the store. And buying the cat litter. And changing the cat boxes you've been avoiding because your brains been stuck in a hole. And picking up the trash you've been piling up. And getting a load into the wash. And mowing the lawn before the village council sends you a formal complaint and potential-fines warning.

Like its hard and annoying to do because it sucks. It sucks so much. But if I don't start working on this pile of bullshit I've let build up because it stinks and i was stuck in deer-in-headlights mode, I risk letting it turn into fuckery. I do not have the patience for fuckery that I once - foolishly! - thought I had.

I am going to markets in summer to sell my artwork - but also 4 other confirmed artists' artwork at pride festivals. I'm building a queer artist collective and we want to bring queer-created pride merchandise to local markets. We want to directly benefit our local community. -I got a microloan for this, but last second my guy had to halve the loan amount. He said he could cover my transport + the requested amount to cover all expenses, but then he had to change it to just the requested amount, last second. -My employer ghosted me - long story short. I showed up to work multiple times to find the business closed without any communication whatsoever. BUT they are also a queer small business owner. I will not be seeking anything from them, nor will I go into any more detail about where I was working. Yes it sucks for me and yes it sucks for everyone else affected, but infighting is not worth it, and I want them to do well.

What to do if you suddenly find yourself homeless

FOOD

Find your nearest food bank or mission, for food

grocery stores with free samples, bakeries + stores with day-old bread

different fast food outlets have cheaper food and will generally let you hang out for a while.

some dollar stores carry food like cans of beans or fruit

SHELTER

Sleeping at beaches during the day is a good way to avoid suspicion and harassment

sleep with your bag strapped to you, so someone can’t steal it

Some churches offer short term residence

Find your nearest homeless shelter

Look for places that are open to the public

A large dumpster near a wall can often be moved so that flipping up the lids creates an angled shelter to stay dry

HYGIENE

A membership to the YMCA is usually only 10$, which has a shower, and sometimes laundry machines and lockers.

Public libraries have bathrooms you can use

Dollar stores carry low-end soaps and deodorant etc.

Wet wipes are all purpose and a life saver

Local beaches, go for a quick swim

Some truck stops have showers you can pay for

Staying clean is the best way to prevent disease, and potentially get a job to get back on your feet
