Hoo could have been SOOO much better if it had been 5-6 years in the future and if percy and annabeth were mentors rather than part of the seven with nico, now 18-19, and reyna, now 20-21, in their place. Book one shld have been devoted to fleshing out camp jupiter and those demigods BEFORE jason being kidnapped, the book two with jason's place swap and the rest of the seven traveling to camp jupiter at the end and meeting up with frank, hazel (who has no creepy romance with frank) and reyna. Book three is their journey to greece with percabeth as mentors, with percabeth still falling in tartarus as a result of gaea's interference after her children's death. Gaea also gets more character and the ecofacism angle is played out, with her anger over the state of her world being her main motivation, not just wanting to rule the world. In an ideal world pipeyna and valgrace develop over the course of moa and hoh. There is more development for every character (as well as the characters of color not being caracatures), such as hazel coming into her status as the most powerful demigod around and learning to deal with that, Leo learning to deal with his traumas and take himself more seriously, the lost trio actually caring about each other, jason assuming and dealing with a leadership role with percabeth's absence, piper unlearning her 'not like other girls' mindset and gaining strength through her friendships with hazel and annabeth, frank realizing his strength was never based on his appearance and becoming more confident WITHOUT physically changing, nico learning to trust other people, starting with his sister, and coming to terms with his sexuality (with no out-of-the-blue romance with will), and reyna bridging the gap between greek and roman, as well as accepting that she was not to blame for for her father's death. The main conflict is not greek v. roman, (although that is still a factor, but smaller), but between demigods loyal to olympus and demigods (and nature spirits) attracted by gaea's promise of a better, cleaner world, who join her side bc they are disillusioned and disappointed with the state of the world. At the end of hoh, percabeth are saved, but left completely scared by their experiences, and their extreme pts actually being explored. In the end, they decide to return home bc they know they are of no more help to the seven, as well as to heal. In boo, the seven are forced to split up near the beginning. Reyna is called away by her sister and the amazons and hunters due to the threat of orion, and piper and nico, unwilling to leave her, go with her. Reyna's arc with orion is p much the same except it happens in Europe bc that's the one part of boo that I remember to have fucked SEVERELY and the only time Rick wasn't a coward when it came to killing characters. Frank, hazel, leo, and jason continue to travel to Athens, and I don't remember basically anything that happens in boo so. They reunite around 75% through the book, a bit before Athens.

Annabeth- No, no, no, cause I’m book smart and street smart, so I’m 12 times smarter than you.

Leo- K, so I know I’m really hot, but I’m also really depressed, so it’s a double struggle, you know?

Jason- I’m supposed to be the dude who’s got it all together, but I don’t, so I’m gonna go sleep in this corner, okay?

Piper- So like, my boyfriend broke up with me, but I really don’t mind. Also, I’m 69% sure I’m lesbian.

Hazel-  Am I a cinnamon roll? Am I a mass murderer? You’ll never know.

Frank- I do not think I should be here. Like I literally do not live in this country.

Nico- I haven’t slept in four days and am living of caffeine but we’ve all been there, ya know?

Thalia- This will probably get me killed, but it’ll look awesome, so make sure you get it on video

Reyna- Bitch I am asexual. Hit on me one more time I WILL slit your throat

Will- Okay, so I know I’m the happy friend, but I’m really going through shit right now, so God help me-

Clarisse- Yes, I will murder you. Was that ever a question?

Grover- Guys, I’m literally just here for the food-

Travis and Connor- For the last time, we aren’t twins but we can still fuck shit up, trust us.

Rachel- Yes, I’m gay. Yes, I love art. I’m an art gay! Don’t mess with me!

Percy Jackson is definitely one of my ‘comfort book series’, and compared to other middle age/older white cishet males, Rick did a good job portraying the characters. However, there’s a few things I noticed while rereading it and I’d like to point some out. 

1. Making Frank, the only Asian character, the only one without dyslexia. This enforces the stereotype that all Asians are super smart and all that. 

2. Forcefully outing the only gay kid there was for the first ten books. Now this is a really common cliché, but seriously, there’s other ways for us to come out. 

3. Making Piper hate other ‘girly girls’. Now I get she’s a ‘tomboy’, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Hell, I’m a ‘tomboy’. But that doesn’t mean I hate on other girls trying to express themselves. Like, Piper’s the excepting type; she wouldn’t put other girls down.

4. Killing of Bianca off for Nico’s character development. Like, she was already leaving for the hunters, meaning Nico wouldn’t see her as much anymore, but no. He killed her off. And there’s nothing wrong with needing character development, but I have literally never seen it when the male dies for the female development. It always the ‘worthless female’ that’s only there for a male’s development. And I’m not calling Bianca useful at all here, I promise.

5. Having Annabeth hate Rachel out of jealousy, then having everything be fine after she becomes oracle. Like, I’m glad they got over that barrier and became friends, but come on. You don’t just go ‘oop- don’t hate you anymore. haha’ that quick.

6. Having people, especially Frank, shame Leo for not masking his neurodivergent traits. And sure, maybe the others don’t mask theirs either, but Leo’s is probably the most severe, and why should he have to mask it? (Look that up if you don’t know what it means). 

There’s definitely more, so I’d like to here one’s that you come up with

loved how they changed the name of tfatws to captain america and the winter soldier, but i would have loved to see it changed to captain america and the white wolf.
