Some lightning shots I got this evening. Was supposed to be a fairly big storm so I set up my camera to try and image it. It nearly passed me by completely. I did manage to capture a few of the cloud-to-cloud lightning as it was receding. None struck the earth from my view. Took a lot of shots to get 3 moderately decent images. Swan watching over its last egg. I went down to Bayfront Park/Pier 4 to check on the status of the 3 nesting swan pairs in that area. I knew one pair had already abandoned it's nest. I saw that a 2nd pair at the north end of Bayfront had left their nest with 1 egg remaining (out of 6 or 7 originally). This swan was the last hold out at pier 4 near the Leander boat club. It only had 1 egg remaining out of 5. That egg is also likely not going to hatch. All of the swan eggs should have hatched about 3 weeks ago. Too much rain and cold weather early probably caused the eggs to fail. Sad but it happens. Day 2 of my welding course. Starting to look the part. And got some welds in. Photo is one of my earlier attempts at welding a couple of straight lines (1st assign) - clearly need more practise. Finally got 3 good welds in for assign. Then started practising other basic welds including joining 2 or more pieces together. Then finished it off by welding my name. Hmm. Got up late this morning and found out No Hot Water in the apartment. I saw a plumbing truck outside so figured it would be fixed shortly. Hours later still not avail. Called super and she had posted a notice downstairs this morning that the tank had a crack - not particularly helpful. No Hot Water today or tomorrow. So I guess it's sponge baths in the kitchen sink ( washing the sink before and after). So I may not be as April (or June) fresh as I normally would be. Big tray of macaroni pie ready for the oven. A trini dish my ex taught me to cook. I still enjoy hot spicy foods. This is a nice light snack - spice-wise. Macaroni elbows, onion, green onion, chilli/cayenne pepper, hot trini peppers, grated cheese, eggs, salt, pepper, evap milk - and secret trini seasoning. Very interesting morning touring the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple facility at King W and Queen S. Home to 8 of 30 area lodges. They held in open house today in celebration of the official Freemason's foundation 300 years ago, though their may be ties going back further. A lot of history. Very open and friendly bunch. A very big crowd in attendance at Becky Katz 10 years in wood exhibit at the Casino Artspace Gallery. It was the first time I had a chance to see some of her work. I knew she was well known and respected in the Hamilton Art community. One-night workshop at Siteline studio tonight was making paper lanterns with Hitoko Okada. This was my end result. Very geometric decorating - not surprising for an engineering type. Taking my temporary roommate out for a walk on a nice Sun afternoon in her stylish harness and leash. She's still not used to the outdoors since she's only been outside about a half dozen times. But she immediately took to tree climbing her first time. She met her first dog (little lap dog) today and it was a peaceful and drama-free encounter. Crescent moon over Bayfront Park. I'm at the park area trying to catch the sunset (not really) and check on the status of the 3 swan pairs with nests in the area. Sadly things don't appear to be fairing well. One nest near the Bayfront boat launch apparently has lost 1 egg (down to 5??). One pair near the macassa marina has lost all their eggs and have abandoned their nest. I couldn't find any shell fragments. They were out in open water several hundred metres away with no young. After visiting the Devil's Punchbowl, I went down to Van Wagner's beach to look for some small pieces of driftwood for an upcoming project I want to try. With all the rain, water levels are very high and the beach front has experienced a lot of erosion and accumulation of debris. (at Van Wagners Beach)
