What are your thoughts on this? First I was surprised to see it was jackles who said this considering the show was focused more on dean for the longest time. Feels like he really does need to be the single lead by himself, would explain the whole The Winchesters mess

All that interview tells me is that Jensen doesn't understand basic storytelling and the role of a protagonist and supporting protagonist.

Did Sam think of himself? Sure, because he wanted safety, away from the family business. But just because the storyline revolves around one character for a while doesn't mean that the character is selfish. It just means the character has more of a story that needs to be told. Supernatural is Sam's hero's journey from overcoming all the obstacles to accepting his life and finally being rewarded with what he always wanted, a stable home life, but at a very high cost - the loss of the one person closest to him.

The fact that the Dean-centric storylines were the lowest-rated in the series should have clued Jensen in to the fact that people didn't tune in for Dean's journey. In fact, all the Dean-centric stories - purgatory, Demon Dean, Michael Dean - none of them produced any real change or growth in Dean. People were annoyed that you could barely tell a difference between MOC Dean and the real Dean the characters were so similar. Dean never really went evil, or had to suffer the guilt because of it. And by the end of the series, the only real growth Dean had obtained revolved around Sam and accepting Sam's autonomy.

I think there's some real insecurity there for Jensen to want to be the lead protagonist in SPN for so long and pushing for it even though it didn't serve the story. A secure actor would recognize their role as a supporting protagonist as being equally as important as the protagonist because it allows the audience to connect with the protagonist through the supporter's view. But, for whatever reason, he couldn't recognize Dean's importance to Sam's story and that's too bad.

And yes, I believe that insecurity has led us directly into TW, where it's becoming quite clear that the entire show is starting to revolve around Dean, thereby making Dean possibly the most important character.

If we all collectively agree that Sam is woman coded 👀 and his entire story fits a good chunk if not the entire song.. I’m just sayin 💀😎

This video shows so much of why I hate Dean a lot and don't understand how people actually think he's this great guy. Like I really don't get how people like him unless their seeing him as an antagonist. It just makes no sense. The begining shows how sexist he is from the beginning of the show and yet people call him a feminist? He constantly abuses sam and Castiel and yet people glorify those relationships? Like how?

Did any of you ever notice that Dean forces Sam into their hella’ toxic codependent relationship?

I feel like I’m over analyzing it, but the more I watch the show again from how Sam was with dean in the beginning to the end it makes me wonder 💭

Another thing to add about the purgatory thing is

Sam didn’t know Dean or Castiel were in purgatory (who just thinks that when someone explodes they go to purgatory and not death??)

his surrogate father is dead (who was the one with information but all that’s gone now since the house was burned to the ground)

he lost basically everyone, and was still going through the aftermath of the hell stuff

Dean makes no sense, the fandom who supports him make no sense

hating someone for escaping an abusive household is not okay

hating someone for keeping something about themself a secret (especially if the person they’re keeping it secret from has previously shown how judgmental they are towards the things they’re hiding) is not okay

hating someone for trusting the wrong person, even tho that person went to extraordinary lengths to gain their trust, is not okay

hating someone for not blindly following their sibling’s every command is not okay

hating someone for unknowingly participating in causing something awful to happen, even tho they thought they were actually stopping the awful thing from happening, (especially when they willingly sacrificed themself and spend several lifetimes suffering in order to fix their mistake) is not okay

hating someone because they respected a mutual agreement and because they tried to move on with their life after losing someone is not okay

hating someone for trying to set boundaries after a person they trusted violated their bodily autonomy and for telling said person that they wouldn’t do the same thing to them is not okay

meanwhile 99% of the shit for which dean gets a pass, when applied to real life situations, would horrify any semi decent human being

acting judgmental towards an aspect of someone’s life and then getting mad at them for keeping secrets regarding that same aspect is not okay

using someone’s faith to manipulate them into doing what you want is not okay

Dean and his contradictions we’re actually wild

“I want you to get out. I want you to have a life.” But also Sam can only have one after Dean is dead and buried. And well, not even then really, because if Dean happens to come back when Sam thinks he’s dead and Sam wasn’t the one who spent all his time trying to bring him back? That’s a bad thing. And Sam is wrong to do that. But also he needs to get out of hunting and have a life. But also-

It's been a while since I watched Supernatural, so don't take my opinions as gospel or anything. But I think Dean is self-hating to the point of narcissism in some ways. Don't get me wrong, I empathise with Dean and understand why fans largely do too. But his self-loathing warps his perception and becomes the centre of EVERYTHING and at times that really has ripple effects on those around him - particularly Sam.

Take their childhood, Sam has a right to mourn the fact that he didn't get a normal childhood. He's allowed to be angry that he didn't get a home, a present father, a stable community, and consistent education. But whenever Sam attempts to express his complicated feelings about his childhood, Dean immediately interprets it as ' oh I was supposed to look out for you. Are you saying I failed? Are you confirming I'm worthless?' which grinds the conversation to a complete halt. Because of Dean's intense self-criticism, Sam can never really be 100% honest with him or ask for support with his own issues, especially regarding their childhood. As anything outside of 100% gratitude just becomes another stick for Dean to beat himself with, and the conversation is immediately derailed.

Not only does Deans self-hatred mean that Sam's expression of his own experiences are pretty consistently shut down. In some ways, I think Dean strips Sam of his autonomy - he's so self-loathing, he sees every decision Sam makes as being about/a reaction to him. A good example of this is Stanford. Rather than understanding Stanford for what it was, an attempt by Sam to carve out a better life from himself and escape hunting. Dean views it as betrayal or abandonment, some re-affirmation of his own belief that he's not worth caring about. Rather than understanding it's a rejection of hunting, he sees it as Sam rejecting him. To Dean, Sam isn't attempting to find a better life, he's punishing the family.

Overall, it's interesting that people largely and rightfully sympathise with Dean due to his self-hatred. However, I don't see as much discussion about how his self-hatred doesn't just hurt him, it hurts those he's close to, as it colours his interpretation of their every action. Dean's self-loathing is always the biggest thing in the room and that has consequences.

You know, it seems to me that the ZoLu nation should unite and write a whole essay analyzing the manga with Zoro/Luffy moments, confirming the canonical nature of this ship and including moments from the Netflix adaptation. Newbies are coming to the fandom, and it’s a shame that after admiring Zoro’s vow and oath, his and Luffy’s cute moments, they suddenly say that two men insulting each other and arguing over who Luffy actually needs, is a better ship. Perhaps if such an essay existed on ao3, it would help people to understand ZoLu's vibes more deeply, because in the manga there are really a lot of moments that show how loyal Zoro is to Luffy, how much his captain is dearer to him than anything else in the world. This is clearly not a job for one person, as it would require re-reading and analyzing many manga chapters and frames, but if something like this existed, it would be the best thing that ZoLu fans could create for their ship.
