do not joke about the advertisements, do not engage with the advertisements in witty fashions, do not, fucking, mention the contents of the advertisements. as soon as an advertisement enters your mind, you kill it, dont care how cute it is, take it out back and shoot it. install adblock, ublock, mute the volume, look away, turn off the monitor, cover your ears, paint over it. evolve your mind, your modality, your instincts, to disregard the stimuli of advertisements before you can even process it. whatever it takes, you do not let them win. and thats an order.

please god stop talking about diets and weight loss in front of kids. especially if those kids are girls. and especially if you’re someone those kids look up to. but really just stop talking about about diets and weight loss when children are in earshot at all. I promise you you’re doing far more harm than good.

Hi please PLEASE talk to me abt the socioeconomic state of japan in bnh verse I am SO interested to hear ur thoughts? I'm a poli theory major and let me tell u im a SLUT for fic that deal w the political/social repercussions of fictional happenings

sure thing!

disclaimer: i only just graduated high school so i’m pulling all of this out of my ass one semester of macroeconomics i took in senior year. feel free to add onto or correct any of this

edit: if anyone wants to use this for reference when writing boku no hero japan, feel free! i’d appreciate any credit, but it’s not necessary.

what really got me thinking about the socioeconomic state of boku no hero japan was probably the difference between orudera junior high (bakugou and izuku’s school) vs. yuuei, both of which are in the same city, musutafu. orudera junior high gives off the feeling of a school that’s a bit run down; not terrible enough that it obstructs the kids’ education, but enough that you think the school probably can’t afford to keep it in good repair.

here’s a screenshot of bakugou and izuku’s classroom:

image

and then here’s izuku’s desk, which has details indicating that it’s in slight disrepair:

image

if you go back through the chapters and look at the setting at yuuei, it’s spic-n-span. just super clean and well-kept. it’s an entire world of difference… so already there is this huge disparity between the junior high school in izuku’s neighborhood, and yuuei, which is a 40 minute subway ride away (chapter 3).

makes sense that yuuei would be so nice and expensive if it’s the most prestigious hero academy in the country, right? but there’s more details too, like this brief exchange between bakugou & iida right at the very beginning:

image

bakugou’s resentful comment about iida being an “elite” really only makes sense to me in the context of economic disparity. let’s infer that soumei junior high is better funded, better equipped, better everything in general. of course bakugou will resent iida for that, especially coming from the more ill-maintained orudera junior high. the difference in their economic status is already apparent.

this isn’t even going into the difference between yaoyorozu’s incredibly rich status vs the rest of the class vs uraraka, who has decided to become a hero because she wants the financial security, and who also lives in an apartment by herself and skips meals to save on money. so even within the class itself there’s a huuuge difference in economic status.

you could just think of it as the individual circumstances of the characters, but i think it’s more of a systematic problem – see, again, the difference in infrastructure quality between the different schools (the public school is not doing so great but yuuei is doing fantastic). maybe the city is poor, or maybe all of its funds go towards repairing the constant property damage from villain attacks, or maybe there’s just some areas they don’t care to maintain. either way: just by traversing different parts of the city you’ll probably see big differences in how well the neighborhoods are kept.

and now, for a different question: if this is the golden age of peace, why are there still so many villain fights?

I’m calling some BS

80% of the population has a known quirk.

So, logically, 20% either are quirkless or have quirks that are hard to discover, right?

Clearly wrong, as far as literally everything the anime (not sure about the manga) has shown us.

If a whole 20% of the population were quirkless, Midoriya may have been the only member of his class without a quirk, but not his whole grade. There’s more than 80 students in a grade in any given city.

If a whole 20% of the population were quirkless, there would’ve been various interest and support groups. Mrs. Midoriya could have joined a “quirk parents of quirkless children group,” and Izuku would’ve had lots of friends, perhaps more than Bakugo.

People of similar sub cultures/disabilities/interests/minorities find each other!

In elementary school, I was the only kid who’d ever heard of my father’s religion. At the school, at least. Frequently, almost every week, I would go spend time with other kids in my age group that were being raised by parents of that religion. We were less than .05% of the local population, religion wise. I still had like 20 kids with in two years on either side of my age.

Midoriya would have more. I’d be willing to lay money on there being a kid born on the same day as him, maybe in the same hospital, who was quirkless and lived in a reasonable distance to hang out frequently, if this were a real situation.

20% of a population does not just completely isolate themselves. Especially not from others with similarities that make them the minority.

Or to put this another way, 80% of the population has a quirk. 1 in every 5 people would not.

And let’s not even get into people connecting over the internet.

This has been a plot hole rant, there may be more in the future, thanks for reading! (Feel free to add on, or, argue, I guess, if you can find a way to argue that doesn’t boil down to ‘dramatic back story’ or ‘plot convenience’)

BNHA Meta

me: because you have this story set in this superhero world, but like, the horrors of modern Japanese society are still very much present

me: (like why the hell would a highly individualized quirk society still be using family registration and koseki? the reason is because Horikoshi is Japanese and didn't think that was weird, much like when Americans toss around their Imperial measuring system willy-nilly, but it says something about BNHA as a window to modern Japan)

me: Mental illness is seen as something shameful and to hide away from

me: I mean, it's crazy that Todo's mom was in that hospital for 10 years. like most modern psychiatric facilities would promote rehabilitating a patient back into their life way earlier

me: the fact that Todoroki implies that he has to save her from the hospital says A LOT about her situation. she's probably been totally abandoned by her family thanks to the mental health stigma/the fact Endeavor managed to charm them into making her marry him to begin with

me: (also how wealthy Endeavor is to be able to fund her permanent stay and yet how empty and cold her room is)

me: (even terminally ill people don't stay in the hospital that long, it's so expensive and no hospice wants to tear someone totally out of their normal life)

me: (so like I said, honestly terrifying)

me: (like Endeavor is the worst but also, fuck Todomama's family. They clearly didn't do shit for their daughter.)

me: It's still a shonen and they don't criticize society so much as the individual but the implications are so important and it becomes fascinating to pull apart because there's so much of the modern Japanese fantasy and reality mixed up in this superhero world

me: like the hero culture in HeroAca has startling parallels to the horrifically exploitative idol culture in Japan

me: kind of the hyper commercialization of personalities and the idea of rankings being some be all, end all

which paired with, instead of a sexualized consumption, but a consumption of violence, is kind of startling

me: (well there's still sexualized consumption because the treatment of women as sexual objects is rampant even here)

me:in some ways, it's almost hunger games esque, this commercialization of violence and the audience participation in this act
