Outsiders are not not saving a language by learning it.
While I’m personally grateful services like Tribalingual exist, creating some academic access to Indigenous languages, particularly for Indigenous diaspora (if they can afford it), I’m extremely dubious of the notion that a outsiders learning an Indigenous language is somehow “saving” it. There was a testimonial from some white American girl learning Ainu itak, and she spoke of it as if she were collecting some rare Pokemon card before it went out of print or something, framing it in typical dying Native rhetoric. What is she going to do with Ainu itak, except as some obscure lingual trophy?
If you want to save a language, save the people.
Language means nothing without history and culture breathing life into it, and in turn we are disconnected from our history and ancestors without it. Support Indigenous quality of life, ACCESS to quality education, quality health services (mental and physical), land and subsistence rights, CLEAN DRINKING WATER, advocate against police brutality and state violence, DEMAND ACTION FOR MISSING AND MURDERED INDIGENOUS WOMEN.
Damn, if you really want to “save the language” pay for an Indigenous person’s classes for them to reconnect to their mother tongues. I’m not saying outsiders shouldn’t learn languages they’re invited to learn, but don’t pretend like you learning conversational Ainu itak is saving it from extinction.
Why did we as a society ever stop making Jugend style architecture?
That should honestly be something we bring back for Solarpunk. The nature inspired and geometric designs feel like they should be right up that particular alley.
The lavender held memories, the eucalyptus remembered all the tears, and the poppies were always there to see the years crawl by.

capitalism is fucking scary because it will commodify literally anything. it commodifies the rebellion culture that is supposed to strike against the system but capitalism turns it into “punk rock”. it commodifies spirituality to make you buy self help books that teaches you to stay away from capitalism. it commodifies minimalism and makes you buy things to maintain your minimalist aesthetic. it commodifies global warming, one of the deadliest consequences of capitalism itself and guilt trips you into buying “green products”. it commodifies itself and creates the idea that vanity is fashionable. it will eat everything up.
A history of plastic and the lobbying that surrounded it.
Tis the season of mass consumption. One of my friends was telling me about how her grandmother used to save old holiday cards to make name tags for presents. Seemed pretty solarpunk to me. Thought I’d share.
We have the right to good jobs and a liveable future.

I just came across Molly Costello’s art, and it’s so incredibly solarpunk! It’s so gorgeous and hopeful and wonderfully nature-inspired and I love everything about it.

Did you know you can grow mushrooms to eat by feeding them plastic? Or that mushrooms evolved this capability themselves? It’s true, plastic eating fungi has been found in landfills in Pakistan and it’s so prolific that it can break down polyester polyurethane in a matter of weeks. Mushrooms are great at bioremediation, so good at it fact, that they can suck radiation and heavy metals from the soil, eat plastic, petroleum, and remove CO2.
The mini farm designed to grow these amazing plastic eating fungi is called the “Fungi Mutarium” and it allows for the cultivation of Schizophyllum commune and Pleurotus ostreatus. The steps to degrade the plastic are simple and can be found below:
- UV sterilize the materials and chambers.
- Place the plastic into a “growth sphere” an egg shaped pod of agar agar.
- Add diluted mycelium culture to the “growth spheres” within the incubator.
It’s simple isn’t it? And the end product resembles an edible food bowl or cup that you can put salad in. Research is still being done to make sure it’s 100% safe to consume and no doubt free of micro-plastic residue, but even if this doesn’t get the green light for edibility, it would be a great way to process plastics at home with our current recycling issues here in the U.S.

I know I’ve written about this a lot in the past month but this article has some new tidbits about mushroom’s beneficial effects on soil remediation. Apparently, not only can mushrooms break down plastics, radioactivity, generate electricity, and a plethora of other things. But it can also remove pesticides, dyes, remnants of explosives in the soil, and act as a stimulant for biofuel conversion! Pretty interesting stuff isn’t it?

If You’re Gonna Make Something Wheelchair Accessible, Don’t Make it a Thing
Here’s some examples awkward accessibility being a thing:
Your at a hotel that has a lift to get you from one sub-floor to another, but the lift can only be unlocked and operated by one specific person that the hotel now has to go find. Sure, they’ve made the entrance to the sub-floor is accessible, but now it’s a thing.
The buses are wheelchair accessible but the driver has to stop the bus, take 30 seconds to lower the goddamn ramp, move passengers out of their seats, hook up the straps and then secure you in the bus. Sure, they’ve made the busses accessible but now it’s a thing.
The restaurant has an accessible entrance, but it’s past the trash room and through the kitchen. Sure, the restaurant is accessible, but now it’s an insulting thing.
Here’s some great examples of accessibility not being a thing:
The train to the airport pulls up flush with the platform. I board with everyone else and sit wherever the fuck I want. Riding the train is accessible and not a thing.
In Portland, I press a button the side of the streetcar and a ramp automatically extends at the same time the door opens. I board in the same amount of time as everyone else. This is not a thing.
I get that it is difficult to design for wheelchair accessibility, but folks need to start considering the overall quality of the experience versus just thinking about meeting the minimum requirements.
How big is solarpunk?
If you consider yourself a follower of the solarpunk movement, or even just have a casual interest in the subgenre, please reblog this post! I’m trying to gauge the size of the current solarpunk ‘fandom’ on tumblr. If there’s sufficient interest, I might even look into creating a network or group of some kind so that like-minded solarphiles can share ideas, headcanons and projects.
