Expression practice with Orange Roullette

Recently Orange Roulette became really popular again, and even got a remake. That was already some time ago, but these last few days I decided to revisit it yet again, because the game is just that good.

The best part about it is, without a doubt, the expressions of the characters. They are incredibly subtle, and every single twitch they make indicates a very complex number of emotions. I think my favourite is the face the protagonist makes when he's being aimed at. He completely understands why the other is doing it, and that they have no choice but to do so as well, and yet he's still pissed, and, of course, really scared, because that goofy banana gun and his oponent's stupid face might just be the last thing he sees. It's a very contrived kind of angry that I really liked to see.

I also really loved how the protagonist is always sad when his oponent dies, no matter who it is. It shows that, no matter what, the life of a person was lost, and that what they are going through right now is nothing short of a tragedy. His expression also showcases his guilt, that he survived - and is probably relieved that he did - and the other didn't.

The expressions of the other oranges were spectacular as well. I love the sadistic orange, the one that previously had a white eye, because his sadism is just barely visible but it's still very much there. He's clearly getting some level of enjoyment from this situation, but he doesn't quite want the oponent to know that, just letting slight hints of it slip out: he smirks when he receives the gun, and he smiles when his oponent dies. He probably didn't ask to be there, but he sure as hell isn't complaining, as long as he wins, of course.

The crying orange is quite similar, but in the oposite way. He's clearly very distressed, and about to cry, but he is trying his damdest not to let those tears out, with only a single one dropping from the corner of his eye when he dies. But unlike the sadistic orange, the crying orange doesn't want to be there one bit. I think my favourite detail about him is in the remake, where he crosses his fingers whenever his oponent has the gun, either praying for them not to shoot him, or for them to shoot themselves and let the game be over.

Edit: Was replaying the game today and noticed something I hadnt before: The MC's very brief expression when he's about to shoot.

it lasts for like 2 frames but if means the world to me now. I couldn't hold myself from drawing it. Decided to include his face when the gun doesn't shoot because it's hilarious. Like that's no "oopsie daisy", I can literally hear his thoughts and they're all screaming, they are all screaming... It's really heartbreaking but I cant help but laugh whenever this happens I mean just look at him.

So uh…a conversation spiraled out of control in a paw patrol discord server…I decided to make something to commemorate it…

Literally THIS is the reason why I don’t like to browse through fanart and other paw patrol fanfics most of the time. I’m scared of people portraying literal children like…that. Eugh.

Also the argument about them “just being fictional” is just plain stupid and invalid. Like, it doesn’t matter if they’re fictional or not; they’re still portrayed as kids in their respectful piece of media.

Like, I remember a time I naively looked at paw patrol fan art like 2-3 years ago and found this anime style Ryder. I would’ve given it a pass and maybe complimented it for how well detailed and cool the art looked, but I looked at it ONCE and thought “holy crap, why does it look like he’s giving the fourth wall bedroom eyes?”

Now, before I potentially vomit all over the place from remembering this reprehensible side of the fandom, thank u for bringing this problem up. I’m sure it means a lot to the paw patrol fans of tumblr :D (even if posts of paw patrol don’t get much attention, it still means a lot.)
