Then LT James Stewart. An established actor volunteered to serve in the US Army Air Corps in WWII. He turned down offers as a stateside flight instructor, making training films, publicity bond tours and the like. Stewart demanded a combat slot and flew 20 missions over Germany. He earned two DFCs, and even the French Croix de Guerre.
Despite studio offers of thousands of dollars to return to films Stewart stayed in uniform and earned around $300.00 per month at his highest rank.
