lullaby at 102º by Traci Brimhall
If someone would ask what my biggest need is I'd say touch. By Lord, please, pplesse I need to be touched. Right now. And if they raise their eyebrows and eyes flicker to my chest I will commit arseny. I need fingers pressing against my elbow as you pass. I need a hand at my back. The quiet presence of my friend appearing behind me. I can lean back. They have me. They gave me.
I need eyes. Eyes that meet mine and mean something. I need love. And by God isn't that a way to simple word. I want my friend to watch me turn away with a small smile before they continue their conversation. I want to elicit a warm feeling in a chest. I want someone to hug me and not as a goodbye.I need care. I need sustenance. Require it. Need your hand on my arm and need you to say hey, it's okay. How about a little walk before we continue this work, hm?
Vincent van Gogh. Evening Landscape, Nuenen, 1885.
What I love about theater — something one cannot get with movies — is the singularity of the experience and the absence of a final product. The "same" play can never be performed twice. Even if the actors follow the script word for word, letter by letter — even if they enter and exit the stage at precisely the same moment as before — a single breath taken differently will alter the performance.
And what about the audience? You can’t expect to have the same audience for different performances of the "same" play, and you certainly can’t expect everyone to behave exactly as they did in a previous one. A cough, a whisper, or even the disruptive ring of a phone — all of these ripple through the space, shaping not only the audience’s experience, but also the actors’ performance itself. The theater is an exchange, a living, breathing dialogue between those who perform and those who witness. As such, even if you watch the “same” play five times, you are, in truth, watching five distinct performances — five unique creations that will never exist again.
This singularity is not the only wonder of theater. There is also its lack of a fixed, final product. Each play leaves an impression, an aftertaste, a mark, so to speak, on the spectator, but that’s all you are left with. With cinema, the final product is the movie. With theater, there is no such thing. With plays, every minute is the product of itself. Its finality lies in its continuity.
Of course, some might argue that this notion collapses once a performance is recorded. But trying to record a theatrical performance is a futile pursuit; it’s like attempting to capture the moon and its light with an average phone camera. The essence slips through your grasp. The beauty of theater is that every second counts. There is no final creation because each second is a creation, constantly metamorphosing into the next, and the next, until the whole experience dissolves into memory, an aftertaste, a mark. The beauty of theater lies in its immediacy. Every second matters, for every second is a creation in its own right, an act of becoming that dissolves as it unfolds. In this way, theater mirrors life itself.
Both theater and life resist finality. Their "product" is their continuity. This is why theater so often serves as a metaphor for life. Both in theater and in life, every second matters because, at the end of it all, there is no final product. In the end, all that remains is a memory, an aftertaste, a mark left on those we have touched.
Man, don’t I love theater!

But honey, I was born with the world crumbling around my mother's hospital bed
I grew up stepping around the shards with childish innocence
If you didn't want me to take up weapons,
you shouldn't have shattered the world with yours.
Normal is a memory, but time moves so slow, so much like it always has, that no one notices.
No one notices that we don't talk about jam anymore, or how beautiful your dress is.
Because have you seen the news? There are war crimes, beloved.
Your dress? The price of weeks of food thirty years ago
And it tastes like small hands working sowing machines.
The jam? No one has time for home mades anymore, my dear. There are tears to be swallowed.
I wonder if there ever was a normalcy, with Sunday brunches and sadness, not depression. Or if it was always a memory.
Always just a few generations out of our reach.
See, I was wrong.
We do notice.
It touches me that this touched something in you

Welcome to TROPED Chapters, a brand new TROPED Multifandom Challenge!!! Everyone loves a good chapter fic, but have you ever tried writing one where you don’t know where the story is going? Can you write a fic that has tropes chosen for you without backing yourself into a corner? See if you’re up to the challenge and join us for Chapters!
Multi-Fandom Event & No Sign-Ups Required! If you would like to participate, we’d love to have you! Just take a look at our prompt, pick your tropes, and get to writing!
Chapters Prompt! We’ve selected an overall Story Arc for you to follow which will span the three chapters of your fic! From there, in each round you must include three (3) tropes, one (1) we chose for you, and two (2) you select from our Trope Bouquet, which includes 16 Tropes! The theme is completely free choice, just make sure it’s from our list!
Write your fic in 15,000 words or less! You will upload your fic anonymously to the AO3 Collection linked at the bottom of this post. Make sure you put what your theme is and what tropes you used in your fic summary, or in the notes at the TOP of your fic, so we can keep our eyes peeled for them as we read the fic! (If you are worried the tropes/themes will spoil your fic, you may put them in the notes at the bottom, but please let us know at the top if you choose to do so, and be sure that all of your tropes and themes are in the same place!)
Read and Review! Once you’ve submitted your own fic, take a look at the others in the competition! Please try to read as many as you can! Take some notes, leave some kudos/comments for the authors, and help us vote on the winners! This is not a requirement for participation, but it is highly encouraged and helps make TROPED build a strong community!
Community Voting! The voting for this event will be pretty simple! We will keep a list of all fics submitted to the event, and then at the end there will be a voting poll! Voting categories are listed in the Google Doc, but the voting will include all fandoms together and will be based on the fic as a whole, and the USE of the chosen prompt! If you do not want your fic included in the voting, you can let us know, or you can simply upload your fic to our non-anon collection instead! We will still share it along with the other fics and it will be included in all masterlists! We will provide a link when voting begins.
Chapters Overall Story Arc: ARRANGED MARRIAGE
Pre-Selected Round 1 Trope: MEET CUTE or MEET UGLY
Trope Bouquet: Select two (2) tropes per round from the list below. You can, of course, choose more than two, but only the first three tropes (1 pre-selected + 2 trope bouquet) you list will be included for voting. You will choose two new tropes from the Trope Bouquet each round so don’t use them all at once!!!
More in depth definitions of the tropes and the overall story arc can be found here! Please take a look at this list, as there will be extra information you NEED to know regarding how to use the tropes, plus all the rules, and if you have questions don’t hesitate to ask!
