it really is insane how waking up early will grant you access to some of the most beautiful sights and sensations in the world that will make you want to live forever, but only if you overcome the gauntlet of a thousand razors that is getting out of bed early. truly one of life's little saw traps.

advice from dad

So, my Dad is a 73-year-old Mexican man who has lived here since he was 16. He was in Watts during the riots in 1965; in 1992, when I was in LA, as soon as the Rodney King verdict was announced, he called me, told me what was coming, told me how to stay safe. He has survived horrible living conditions, being kidnapped, physical abuse, prejudice, discrimination. He learned English, got his green card, pays his taxes, works hard, and has three daughters.

I thought he would be devastated today.

But he wasn’t.

He saw that I was sad and angry, and he asked me why, pretending he had no idea. I almost started crying. And then he said, “no se me chicopale.”

It means, don’t lose heart. Don’t give in to despair.

I asked him why he wasn’t upset.

He said, basically, “The world has always been this way. There are always people who are afraid, who are racist, who are awful. This is not new. And it will never go away. He won. We can’t do anything about that. All we can do is what we can do. Fight for what matters to us. Take care of each other. And don’t lose heart. And here, I got these unsalted cashews for you and a bag of jamaica drink mix and can you show me how to use the new washing machine because it’s not working.”

And, for reasons I can’t articulate, I feel a little better.

"What does it mean to be human? / A reality which ceases to exist."
Film still from "Sweet Home."
A teenage boy kneels on the ground. His eyes are completely black and a large wing protrudes from one of his arms. Beside him, an older man hugs him.
The room around them is dilapidated and falling apart.
"Plenty of humans were monstrous, and plenty of monsters knew how to play at being human."
"I ask god to send a swordsman / and god says 'look at your hands'"
"who hasn't ever wondered: am I a monster or is this what it means to be a person?"
Film still from "Sweet Home."
A teenage boy (left) stands in front of a mirror, looking at a different version of himself (right). On the left side, blood streams down his face from his nose. On the right side, his eyes are completely black and he smiles mockingly.
"What I really wanted to say was that a monster is not such a terrible thing to be. From the Latin root monstrum, a divine messenger of catastrophe, then adapted by the Old French to mean an animal of myriad origins: centaur, griffin, satyr. To be a monster is to be a hybrid signal, a lighthouse: both a shelter and warning at once. "
"The first thing God made is love / then comes blood / and the thirst for blood"
Screencap from "Sweet Home."
A humanoid figure stands alone, looking downwards. It holds a long staff in its hand. Its face is not visible.
"A beast can never be as cruel as a human being, so artistically, so picturesquely cruel."
"1. Man is a MORAL animal. // 2. You can get human beings to do anything - IF you can convince them it is moral. // 3. You can convince human beings anything is moral."
"This is a gift, it comes with a price / Who is the lamb and who is the knife?"
Film still from "Sweet Home."
A teenage boy stares straight ahead, in a state of shock. Blood drips drown from his nose and is smeared across his chin and left cheek.
"This is why Scylla's story is so viscerally horrifying to me: The idea of looking down at a monstrous body and trying to get away, and then realizing that the monstrous body is yours. Is you."

WE SHALL BE MONSTERS

thank god or the universe or whatever for cycles and seasons though like yeah life right now is unbearable. but every two years the olympics come around again, and every december i have christmas and every year there is an autumn where leaves change and fall and the air is crisp. every year has a halloween, and a national pie day, and my cat's birthday, and national star wars day, and the arbitrary date in february when my family watches the princess bride together, and every fall i watch over the garden wall. next year i'll see my second total solar eclipse. there will be new tomatoes next summer and fresh applesauce the season after that. the sun will come back even when march seems like it will never end. don't go yet. it will be your day off soon. the olympics are next year. it'll be someone's birthday soon. everything changes and everything will come back around again, if you stick around to let it.

Flying a piano

An airport

A trip together, the very last one

The tickets are booked, the bags given up.

The gates are so full, we have to find new seats. The cafes are so full, the queue makes people nervous.

Flights delayed, flights on time. We don't acknowledge. No one acknowledges. There's no reason to invest energy, is there.

But there's a public piano.

And he plays.

Slowly, people acknowledge.

He plays.

There are fairy lights strung around a concrete pillar.

He plays.

I wink at the little girl sitting across from me. She smirks back. We eat our bread together.

He plays.

And it's "what a wonderful world".

I see skies of blue

The announcements are unnerving. He plays.

And clouds of white

Eyes soften

The bright blessed day

Smiles grow

The dark sacred night

A girl stops to grin at him, how good his playing is. He smiles.

And I think to myself

For a minute, we live

What a wonderful world.

For a minute,

We are human.
