➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!

➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.

If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)

“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.

➸ “You’ll notice that exclamation marks, question marks, and dashes do not have a comma after them. Ellipses don’t have a comma after them either…” she said.

➸ “My teacher said, ‘Use single quotation marks when quoting within dialogue.’”

➸ “Use paragraph breaks to indicate a new speaker,” he said.

“The readers will know it’s someone else speaking.”

➸ “If it’s the same speaker but different paragraph, keep the closing quotation off.

describing emotions in writing is either “he felt sad” or a two-paragraph dissertation on how his soul crumpled like wet newspaper under the weight of his own existence. no in-between.

♡ as they both get into bed, one says "touch me and die."

♡ both making a pillow wall between them, only for it to be destroyed somewhere along the night.

♡ one wakes up screaming in the middle of the night, leaving their 'enemy' to comfort them.

♡ "i hate you." "as long as you don't hog the covers, i don't care." (they really did care.)

♡ one nudging the other while they're both tucked in because they like seeing their enemy rattled.

♡ "woah, it's cold." their enemy's sleepy form threw something in their direction, it was the enemy's sweater.

♡ unintentionally huddling together for body warmth.

♡ both unable to sleep (due to fears of nightmares) so they both stay up in bed and somewhere along the late night, they start talking and sharing about their pasts.

♡ "you're not sleeping?" "nope." "why not?" "don't want you to stab me the second i close my eyes." "i won't."

♡ cuddling up to each other for warmth, "this never happened?" "deal." except both of them can't stop thinking about it for weeks after.

As I dive into researching signs of fear for my horror WIP, I wanted to share some of the most compelling and visceral reactions I’ve come across. Whether you’re writing a chilling scene or crafting a character’s panic, these 20 signs of fear can help bring tension and realism to your story.

Physical Reactions

Hyperventilating — sucking in air but never feeling like it’s enough

Chest tightens — feels like a weight or hands pressing down

Limbs shaking violently, knees buckling

Complete loss of muscle control — collapsing or unable to stand

Cold sweat soaking through clothes

Heart hammering so hard they feel it in their throat or head

Tunnel vision — the world narrowing down to one terrifying focal point

Ringing in the ears or sudden deafness, like the world drops away

Dizziness / feeling faint / vision blurring

Dry mouth — unable to speak or even scream

Uncontrollable Behavior

Screaming / sobbing / gasping — involuntary vocal outbursts

Panic run — bolting without thinking, tripping over everything

Clawing at their own skin / chest / throat — like trying to escape their body
