A smiles at B .
A :" Don't smile at me like that..."
B: laughs. "Why ? "
B: " Because it makes you look attractive and...bites their lip ."
A: laughs and smirks ,"attractive huh ? And... what ?" Leans closer to B.
B : blushes . "A-and makes your lips look more kissable... "Mumbles shyly .
A: smirks" oh yeah ? " They slip their arms around B's waist , leaning in closer.
B: nods and grins " yeah ..."
A ,smiles and pulls B into a loving kiss .
Enemies to lovers prompts!
Ew, don't smile at me, I might like you .
Ha! Jealous? Why would I be jealous of that idiot going out with someone else? Just looking at them makes me want to puke!
Nobody gets to be an asshole to B except me. You got that ?
The only kiss you're gonna get is a kiss from my fist!
Date A?! Ha!, I'd rather drown in acid than end up with that pain in the ass!
Wow, you finally said something sensible.
For once, though it pains me to say this... - I agree with B.
My eyes are up here , sweetheart.
Shut up and kiss me.
Do you hear that? It's the sound of me not caring.
Just so you know, I still hate you. This doesn't change anything.
Love, if I ever slept with you, those pretty legs of yours wouldn't be able to stand.
Oh please. You and I both know that I am your type.
I can't decide if I want to punch you or kiss you right now.
Are you blushing? Gross.
Shut up! Just...shut up!!
I love you. You enormously stubborn pain in the ass.
You're nothing! Do you hear me? You mean nothing to me.
Tell me one good reason why I should trust you.
Say it one more time. I dare you.
Do I look like someone who seems interested in a thing like you?
Are you happy now huh? Are you happy you've finally got your revenge?!
You finally ruined me. I hope you're happy now.
Just as I was starting to see you in a different light, you open that filthy mouth of yours.
You ruined everything! And you destroyed my heart along with it!
Look me in the eyes. Look me in the eyes and tell me you never loved me. Tell me I never meant anything to you. Go on. Break my heart again. Tell me this was all a lie.
Go on. Leave. Like everyone else.
Did you ever feel sorry for what you did to them? To me?
I've lost count of how many times I've fantasied about you.
I bet you would look even better without your clothes on.
You promised me. You promised you wouldn't kill them... - Then why?! Why did you kill them?!
Betray me again and I will kill you.
Did I stutter? Take it off.
Beg me first.
You know you're a pain in the neck, but... You're alright.
...why did you defend me?
Aww, that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me. " It wasn't a compliment! "
So it was all a lie?! Even your so-called feelings for me?! Were you ever sincere to me at all?!
Unfortunately, I don't have enough middle fingers to let you know how I feel.
Why do I still like you, knowing you tried to kill me?
Remind me to kill you. Please.
I can't help it, you're fun to mess with.
Don't touch me! I don't need your sympathy!
I'm afraid I am incapable of love.
Touch me...please...
I'm a fool for believing someone like you could change.
How did you get those scars? I never did those to you.
Please don't push me away. Not you too.
...did you just compliment me? Oh my God, this must be a nightmare.
You are being abused, aren't you? Do you think I haven't noticed the bruises and scars you always try to hide?!
Why do you care? I thought you hated me.
You. Are. Mine. Do you understand?
I don't think you want to know the kind of things I'm thinking about right now.
* whispers in ear* did that turn you on?
That was the saddest attempt of flirting I've ever seen.
Are you that oblivious or are you trying to turn me on?
Look me in the eyes and say it. Say that you don't love me. I dare you.
Do you think I don't catch staring at me all the time? I see the way you look at me when you think I don't notice.
Ugh,open the windows. I don't wanna get infected with all this stupidity/ sweetness.
Why don't you go ahead and try?
I hate that I don't hate you anymore.
For some reason, I'm attracted to you. And I'm disgusted with myself.
The first person to make a sound loses.
Nothing brightens up my day than seeing you suffer.
Ew, don't compliment me. I might puke out my organs. ( lunch/ dinner )/ I might cringe out all my organs. / someone might think we're friends.
I hate the way you make me feel. I hate that you make me desire things. Things... a person like me would never dream about. You give me hope and it terrifies me.
It's better this way. Whatever was going between us was never destined to last.
That kiss/ that night never happened between us.
So... What are we? Enemies with benefits? Is that even a thing?
I'm going to break your jaw if you keep talking.
The only gift I would ever want to give is piercing a knife through your heart.
Why are you being so nice to me? It's disgusting.
C-can you hold me? / C-can you hug me? I know you hate me but I just want to be held right now.
I wouldn't sleep with you even if I was paid all the money in the world!
I- I have nowhere else to go...
I... I think I'm in love with them and I'm terrified.
Don't make this harder than it already is.
Touch a hair on their head and I will. Kill. You.
I'm gonna harvest your balls ( /organs) if you ever hurt B, you hear me?!
What do I have to do for you to trust me? ! What do you want me to do for you to stop shutting me out?!
I know I don't deserve your forgiveness. But I at least want you to know that what we had was real. There was never a moment with you where I faked my feelings. I... I truly loved you.
I can't lose you. Not you too.
I thought you died! Don't you ever scare me like that again.
Don't talk to A, they're going to infect you with their venom.
Wait- are you jealous?
Ew, don't hug me! I might get infected with your filthy germs.
Me? Like you? Ha! That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Fake dating? With you? Let me go home and laugh at that idea.
Just so to remind you, we're supposed to be a fake couple. I don't want you falling for me. Don't even think about falling in love with me you got that?
If you wanted to see me naked you could have just asked, you know?
Person A: “Did none of you, think this was a bad idea?!”
Person B: “Oh no, we all did. We just decided to do it anyway.”
Ghost Caleb . Who started as your imaginary friend since childhood. Someone who you could talk to as a lonely child. You're too shy to make friends and mostly isolated yourself from the other kids, preferring to enjoy your own company. You could tell him anything at all and play pretend with him all the time. He was always happy to go along with your plans. He was always fun to be with. Always finding new ways to make everyday an adventure or at least interesting for you.
Ghost Caleb. Who was always by your side and let you cuddle with him and give you hugs when you needed it. He would bring you snacks and always made sure you were fed and rested well. Where did he get them?. It was his little secret. He also helped you with your homework when you needed help. Teaching you things you didn't understand and ruffling your hair as he complimented or praised your intelligence and encouraged you. He was like an older brother you never had. A little annoying but nonetheless endearing.
Ghost Caleb. Who made much of your childhood fun as he could and protected you. Taking care of you when your parents or care takers neglected you. He got mad at them when they lashed out at you during their bad days or were harsh to you. Using his ghostly powers to move or break things to startle or scare them back. Your parents couldn't see him or hear him and that's exactly why they should be scared of him.
Ghost Caleb. Who liked to read with you and sing lullabies to you and hold you close when you couldn't sleep or had a nightmare. He would whisper sweet nothings into your ear and gently stroke your hair and tuck you back in bed , staying with you as you held onto him with your little hands till you fell asleep.
Ghost Caleb. Who was always protective of you. Scolded you when you carelessly got yourself hurt but would help you afterwards, sticking bandages to your wounds as you sniffled or cried, sulked or even if you stubbornly said you were fine. He always took care of you when were sick or hurt. He couldn't let you be on your own when you were so clumsy.
Ghost Caleb. Who went to teach a few middle school kids a lesson for daring to bully his little pipsqueak. Only he got to tease you. How dare they make you cry and feel bad about yourself?. The next week, you arrived at school, feeling dread only to find that said kids were avoiding you and keeping a distance and couldn't even make eye contact with you. Hell, two of them even apologized to you later. You still could never figure out why. Well, at least they left you alone.
Ghost Caleb. Who you took as your imaginary friend began to feel a little neglected, lonely and possessive when he noticed you began to hang out with other kids more and even bringing them home for sleepovers. You went to their house to hangout and you called them your best friend. Wasn't he enough?. Why would you need those boring kids for? . He thought he was your best friend. He always made sure to follow you and your little new friends from a distance. Just to make sure you were okay and that you were actually having fun. He couldn't help but feel the slight ache in his chest when he sees that warm smile of yours that only shared with him.
Ghost Caleb. Who tried to get your attention and ask you to hangout with him whenever you were on your phone too much or were watching too much TV. "You're gonna get brain rot from being on that phone too much, pipsqueak. Come on... There's something I want to show you outside " he said when he snatched your phone away. You'd protest but follow him anyway. Sometimes you did have more fun with him than playing those video games all day. But don't tell him that or his ego would pop.
Ghost Caleb. Who noticed how fast you were growing. Feeling like a proud parent and older sibling. He also noticed that you having some problems seeing him or hearing him when he tried to get your attention. You spent more time with your friends, on the phone, doing other things that you liked. Did you not want to hangout with him anymore?. Were you ignoring him now that you didn't need him ? Or did he upset you about something ?. He didn't know but he couldn't help but still stay by your side as usual.
Ghost Caleb, whose heart shattered when he one day realized that you couldn't see him or hear him anymore for some reason. Was it because you were growing up?. Was it because his purpose for you had been served?. You only talked about him in passing when you mentioned having an imaginary friend as a kid but you couldn't recall much about how he looked like. Just a blurry face in your mind, you said.
Ghost Caleb, who went back being what he was before. Nothing but a ghost. A lost soul. Unheard, unseen and untouchable. The world changing and passing him by while he was stuck. Stuck in the same realm of ever unchanging, unseen realm. He still stayed by your side. He couldn't help it. It was all he could do as he watched you grow up and forget him. Shoved away, like the drawings you drew of both of you in the attic.
The lad boys as ghosts would be interesting. So far, I haven't seen ffs on it. Had the idea so I wrote it. Wanna write for the others too. Do I do part 2 for this?. My dead writing soul has awoken from the abyss cuz of this new fandom. Lol.
Those types of touches that are feather-like and make you feel tingly in a good way. Touches like:
Face
The soft caress of your lips after the very first kiss.
Caress to the cheek after a moment together.
Gentle wipe of your spilled tears after heavy arguments, a simple gesture that shows you how sorry they are for making you shed sad tears instead of happy ones.
Gentle wipe of dirt on your cheek after enjoying your food too much.
Chin lift to make you look directly at their eyes that just make you follow aimlessly and without much force really. (bonus if they kiss afterward)
When they hold your face in their hands and just look into your eyes and just hold the other softly.
When they lightly wipe the blood off your lip from bitting it too often and softly "kiss it better"
Helping you gently put your earring on and tuck a hair behind your ear to inspect how the accessory looks beautiful on you with or without them.
Helping you put your necklace on and sneak a quick kiss on your neck before complimenting you.
Softly pulling your hair back after being food poisoned.
Worriedly inspecting your temperature after noticing your lack of mood and giving you a chaste kiss on the forehead.
Hands/Arms
Soft hand touches with a light comforting squeeze that instantly assures you they're there.
Softly massaging your hands when you ask them politely.
Loosely holding your hand while you watch and walk around on your date.
Cradling your cut finger after an incident with the knife and tending to your wound with a kiss afterward.
Caressing the back of your hand absentmindedly.
Softly toying with your ring and wondering when they'll get to replace it with a wedding ring.
Softly running their hands on your arms and feeling how cold to the touch your skin is before wrapping you in a hug to share their warmth.
Softly pulling your wrist to pull you closer to them.
softly intertwining your fingers together to hold your hand or twirl you in the middle of the night dance session.
Edit: holy heck guys!!! Thank you all so much for the notes and reblogs!!! I didn't expect this to get this much attention!!! Love you guys!!! 🥰🥰🥰
feel free to use this prompt list for anyone :) please use at most three per request
Can I kiss you?
How did you not know I liked you? I let you meet my parents!
My friends have a bet to see how long it will take me to ask you out.
All I wanna do is know everything about you.
I can get used to waking up like this.
If you don’t get me ice cream, I’m leaving you for your brother.
Would you mind staying the night?
You’re all I can think about right now.
I’m going to marry you one day.
I’m coming home.
Make breakfast with me.
I’m not meeting your parents when I look like this.
I told my mom/dad about you.
I had a dream that you were my wife/husband.
Why are you crying?
Last time I checked, I am deeply in love with you.
Come dance with me.
Why are you wearing my shirt?
Play [video game] with me.
Stop smacking my ass.
I didn’t trip over my shoelaces. I just fell in love with you again.
Are you jealous?
Wanna go for a drive?
Wanna get some food?
Sorry, I just realized that I might be madly in love with you, but go on.
What if I lose you?
My biggest fear is not having you anymore.
I know I fucked up.
Please don’t touch me.
I don’t know how to deal with this.
Do you actually love me?
I love you so much that I can’t fucking hate you.
Leave me.
What? Is she so much better than me?
I wish I never met you.
I didn’t sleep with your best friend!
I don’t know how much more of this I can actually deal with.
I know this might be dumb, but can you stay with me?
Do you actually mean that?
Of course, I still love you.
You need to decide. Him or me?
I thought you changed.
If you loved me, then why did you sleep with her?
You hurt. You hurt so bad.
I wish I could stop loving you.
Did your ex hurt you?
I lost it.
I’m not going to hit you.
Please slow down the car.
I’m so scared I’m going to lose you.
I think we were too loud last night.
Do you think they can hear us?
Lock the door.
You have the body on an Angel.
Spread your legs for me.
Are you going to be a good girl for me?
Don’t leave too many hickies.
We can’t do this here. Everyone will see us.
Get on your knees.
Your tongue is magic, you know that?
If you get me going, I’m not going to stop.
It’s four a.m.. How are you still horny?
I have never seen you this needy.
Your hot when you’re sweaty.
Do you wanna shower with me?
My legs are shaking.
Do I make you nervous?
I have an extra special present for you.
I still sore from last night.
Those aren’t you’re keys in your pocket is it?
I miss you. Take a bath with me.
Louder.
Damn, you’re wet.
Don’t talk to me when you’re only wearing a towel.
Writing with Color: Description Guide - Words for Skin Tone
We discussed the issue of describing People of Color by means of food in Part I of this guide, which brought rise to even more questions, mostly along the lines of “So, if food’s not an option, what can I use?” Well, I was just getting to that!
This final portion focuses on describing skin tone, with photo and passage examples provided throughout. I hope to cover everything from the use of straight-forward description to the more creatively-inclined, keeping in mind the questions we’ve received on this topic.
So let’s get to it.
S T A N D A R D D E S C R I P T I O N
B a s i c C o l o r s
Pictured above: Black, Brown, Beige, White, Pink.
“She had brown skin.”
This is a perfectly fine description that, while not providing the most detail, works well and will never become cliché.
Describing characters’ skin as simply brown or beige works on its own, though it’s not particularly telling just from the range in brown alone.
C o m p l e x C o l o r s
These are more rarely used words that actually “mean” their color. Some of these have multiple meanings, so you’ll want to look into those to determine what other associations a word might have.
Pictured above: Umber, Sepia, Ochre, Russet, Terra-cotta, Gold, Tawny, Taupe, Khaki, Fawn.
Complex colors work well alone, though often pair well with a basic color in regards to narrowing down shade/tone.
For example: Golden brown, russet brown, tawny beige…
As some of these are on the “rare” side, sliding in a definition of the word within the sentence itself may help readers who are unfamiliar with the term visualize the color without seeking a dictionary.
“He was tall and slim, his skin a russet, reddish-brown.”
Comparisons to familiar colors or visuals are also helpful:
“His skin was an ochre color, much like the mellow-brown light that bathed the forest.”
M o d i f i e r s
Modifiers, often adjectives, make partial changes to a word. The following words are descriptors in reference to skin tone.
D a r k - D e e p - R i c h - C o o l
W a r m - M e d i u m - T a n
F a i r - L i g h t - P a l e
Rich Black, Dark brown, Warm beige, Pale pink…
If you’re looking to get more specific than “brown,” modifiers narrow down shade further.
Keep in mind that these modifiers are not exactly colors.
As an already brown-skinned person, I get tan from a lot of sun and resultingly become a darker, deeper brown. I turn a pale, more yellow-brown in the winter.
While best used in combination with a color, I suppose words like “tan” “fair” and “light” do work alone; I’d just note that tan is less likely to be taken for “naturally tan” and much more likely a tanned white person.
Calling someone “dark” as description on its own is offensive to some and also ambiguous. (See: Describing Skin as Dark)
U n d e r t o n e s
Undertones are the colors beneath the skin, seeing as skin isn’t just one even color but has more subdued tones within the dominating palette.
Mentioning the undertones within a character’s skin is an even more precise way to denote skin tone.
As shown, there’s a difference between say, brown skin with warm orange-red undertones (Kelly Rowland) and brown skin with cool, jewel undertones (Rutina Wesley).
“A dazzling smile revealed the bronze glow at her cheeks.”
“He always looked as if he’d ran a mile, a constant tinge of pink under his tawny skin.”
Standard Description Passage
“Farah’s skin, always fawn, had burned and freckled under the summer’s sun. Even at the cusp of autumn, an uneven tan clung to her skin like burrs. So unlike the smooth, red-brown ochre of her mother, which the sun had richened to a blessing.”
-From my story “Where Summer Ends” featured in Strange Little Girls
Here the state of skin also gives insight on character.
Note my use of “fawn” in regards to multiple meaning and association. While fawn is a color, it’s also a small, timid deer, which describes this very traumatized character of mine perfectly.
Though I use standard descriptions of skin tone more in my writing, at the same time I’m no stranger to creative descriptions, and do enjoy the occasional artsy detail of a character.
C R E A T I V E D E S C R I P T I O N
Whether compared to night-cast rivers or day’s first light…I actually enjoy seeing Characters of Colors dressed in artful detail.
I’ve read loads of descriptions in my day of white characters and their “smooth rose-tinged ivory skin”, while the PoC, if there, are reduced to something from a candy bowl or a Starbucks drink, so to actually read of PoC described in lavish detail can be somewhat of a treat.
Still, be mindful when you get creative with your character descriptions. Too many frills can become purple-prose-like, so do what feels right for your writing when and where. Not every character or scene warrants a creative description, either. Especially if they’re not even a secondary character.
Using a combination of color descriptions from standard to creative is probably a better method than straight-up creative. But again, do what’s good for your tale.
N A T U R AL S E T T I N G S - S K Y
Pictured above: Harvest Moon -Twilight, Fall/Autumn Leaves, Clay, Desert/Sahara, Sunlight - Sunrise - Sunset - Afterglow - Dawn- Day- Daybreak, Field - Prairie - Wheat, Mountain/Cliff, Beach/Sand/Straw/Hay.
Now before you run off to compare your heroine’s skin to the harvest moon or a cliff side, think about the associations to your words.
When I think cliff, I think of jagged, perilous, rough. I hear sand and picture grainy, yet smooth. Calm. mellow.
So consider your character and what you see fit to compare them to.
Also consider whose perspective you’re describing them from. Someone describing a person they revere or admire may have a more pleasant, loftier description than someone who can’t stand said person.
“Her face was like the fire-gold glow of dawn, lifting my gaze, drawing me in.”
“She had a sandy complexion, smooth and tawny.”
Even creative descriptions tend to draw help from your standard words.
F L O W E R S
Pictured above: Calla lilies, Western Coneflower, Hazel Fay, Hibiscus, Freesia, Rose
It was a bit difficult to find flowers to my liking that didn’t have a 20 character name or wasn’t called something like “chocolate silk” so these are the finalists.
You’ll definitely want to avoid purple-prose here.
Also be aware of flowers that most might’ve never heard of. Roses are easy, as most know the look and coloring(s) of this plant. But Western coneflowers? Calla lilies? Maybe not so much.
“He entered the cottage in a huff, cheeks a blushing brown like the flowers Nana planted right under my window. Hazel Fay she called them, was it?”
A S S O R T E D P L A N T S & N A T U R E
Pictured above: Cattails, Seashell, Driftwood, Pinecone, Acorn, Amber
These ones are kinda odd. Perhaps because I’ve never seen these in comparison to skin tone, With the exception of amber.
At least they’re common enough that most may have an idea what you’re talking about at the mention of “pinecone.“
I suggest reading out your sentences aloud to get a better feel of how it’ll sounds.
“Auburn hair swept past pointed ears, set around a face like an acorn both in shape and shade.”
I pictured some tree-dwelling being or person from a fantasy world in this example, which makes the comparison more appropriate.
I don’t suggest using a comparison just “’cuz you can” but actually being thoughtful about what you’re comparing your character to and how it applies to your character and/or setting.
W O O D
Pictured above: Mahogany, Walnut, Chestnut, Golden Oak, Ash
Wood is definitely an iffy description for skin tone. Not only due to several of them having “foody” terminology within their names, but again, associations.
Some people would prefer not to compare/be compared to wood at all, so get opinions, try it aloud, and make sure it’s appropriate to the character if you do use it.
“The old warlock’s skin was a deep shade of mahogany, his stare serious and firm as it held mine.”
M E T A L S
Pictured above: Platinum, Copper, Brass, Gold, Bronze
Copper skin, brass-colored skin, golden skin…
I’ve even heard variations of these used before by comparison to an object of the same properties/coloring, such as penny for copper.
These also work well with modifiers.
“The dress of fine white silks popped against the deep bronze of her skin.”
G E M S T O N E S - M I N E R A LS
Pictured above: Onyx, Obsidian, Sard, Topaz, Carnelian, Smoky Quartz, Rutile, Pyrite, Citrine, Gypsum
These are trickier to use. As with some complex colors, the writer will have to get us to understand what most of these look like.
If you use these, or any more rare description, consider if it actually “fits” the book or scene.
Even if you’re able to get us to picture what “rutile” looks like, why are you using this description as opposed to something else? Have that answer for yourself.
“His skin reminded her of the topaz ring her father wore at his finger, a gleaming stone of brown, mellow facades.”
P H Y S I C A L D E S C R I P T I ON
Physical character description can be more than skin tone.
Show us hair, eyes, noses, mouth, hands…body posture, body shape, skin texture… though not necessarily all of those nor at once.
Describing features also helps indicate race, especially if your character has some traits common within the race they are, such as Afro hair to a Black character.
How comprehensive you decide to get is up to you. I wouldn’t overdo it and get specific to every mole and birthmark. Noting defining characteristics is good, though, like slightly spaced front teeth, curls that stay flopping in their face, hands freckled with sunspots…
G E N E R A L T I P S
Indicate Race Early: I suggest indicators of race be made at the earliest convenience within the writing, with more hints threaded throughout here and there.
Get Creative All On Your Own: Obviously, I couldn’t cover every proper color or comparison in which has been “approved” to use for your characters’ skin color, so it’s up to you to use discretion when seeking other ways and shades to describe skin tone.
Skin Color May Not Be Enough: Describing skin tone isn’t always enough to indicate someone’s ethnicity. As timeless cases with readers equating brown to “dark white” or something, more indicators of race may be needed.
Describe White characters and PoC Alike: You should describe the race and/or skin tone of your White characters just as you do your Characters of Color. If you don’t, you risk implying that White is the default human being and PoC are the “Other”).
PSA: Don’t use “Colored.” Based on some asks we’ve received using this word, I’d like to say that unless you or your character is a racist grandmama from the 1960s, do not call People of Color “colored” please.
Not Sure Where to Start? You really can’t go wrong using basic colors for your skin descriptions. It’s actually what many people prefer and works best for most writing. Personally, I tend to describe my characters using a combo of basic colors + modifiers, with mentions of undertones at times. I do like to veer into more creative descriptions on occasion.
Want some alternatives to “skin” or “skin color”? Try: Appearance, blend, blush, cast, coloring, complexion, flush, glow, hue, overtone, palette, pigmentation, rinse, shade, sheen, spectrum, tinge, tint, tone, undertone, value, wash.
