In #LosAngeles and #griffithpark I was shooting for a doc I'm wrapping up when I saw movement out of the corner of my eye. Five coyotes! I tracked them for about half a mile and was about to get ahead of them enough times to shoot this. Snow Flowers? I have never seen anything like this before. The temperature last night was 6 degrees. My daughter and I went for a hike around noon and the temperature was 27 degrees. I kept seeing these odd white shapes on the ground and initially thought it was trash. Finally, I knelt for a closer look and realized these were ice formations. Beautiful, delicate ice ribbons at the bottom of a certain plant - no other plant. All were found with about 10 - 15 feet of the same altitude. When we hiked up hill just a bit, there was nothing. They look as if a cake maker pipped them onto the base of the plant. So many curving layers, winding around as if windblown or somehow gently forced from the plant. Anyone have any idea how these are formed?

Snoqualmie Falls with Salish Lodge about 30 miles east of Seattle. I was on assignment here recently and had a few minutes for some nature pics. I also played around with my new Zhiyun Crane and Sony A6500, a great combination. The water flow was actually kind of low compared to earlier Spring, but still beautiful.
Triple Falls, Upper Horsetail Falls. A great couple of hikes today just east of Portland along the historic route 30. Absolutely fantastic way to spend the later part of day.
One waterfall apiece. I really thought I was about to see a hat trick of Darwin awards. Notice all three people are standing on a damp, slick surface with a level 10, code red deacceleration trauma at the end of a long slide - all for a photo. It was really worrisome to watch people do this. Two other girls were doing the same thing moments before. However, these three seemed so intent on lining up with their own waterfall exit you could hear the moment knocking at the door even above the roar of the crashing water. Luckily, nothing happened. That being said, things like this do happen every day this time of year. Our national parks are stunning places and this hike was one of the best I've undertaken in a long time. So many waterfalls and beautiful scenes. With all that I saw, I couldn't get this potential tradegy out of my head - and it didn't even happen. Be careful as you enjoy an amazing summer. Remember, if you die - that story will be told over and over. Don't let it be a face-palm ending. Stay safe!
What a great day hiking in Oregon! My goal was to get to the Columbia River Gorge, more specifically Oneonta Gorge. I soon found out that the river had recently experienced a flash flood which caused a massive log jam. I was hoping to hike further up the river so that will have to happen another day. Plus, the water was cold on my toes! I really hate that. Luckily, very near by are other world reknowned waterfalls and remarkable landscapes. I've included a few here. Enjoy!
