Trigger warning for Nazis and antisemitism.
I came across the above image being shared by a friend, and I would like to point out some problems with this simplistic approach.
For context, I am a Jewish man, I read and write elder Futhark fluently, I am familiar with runic divination, and I have MANY close Norse neopagan friends: even my sister is a Norse pagan. This post is not an attack on the pagan community. It is a reminder that we MUST address reality, not fantasy.
I understand the sentiment this image is trying to convey, and if you are a Norse pagan, you should resent and defy Nazis for abusing something that is important to you.
However, the reality is that symbols carry meanings given to them by humans, and Nazis have given hateful meanings to Germanic symbols, beginning under the third Reich and continuing to this day. Those symbols include the Futhark runic alphabets, specifically odal and sowilo, as well as symbols like the equal armed cross, the valknut, vegvisir, and mjolnir. These symbols have carried deeply hateful antisemitic meanings since before you, and most of your parents, were born. You CANNOT ignore that, or make it go away.
It would be blind to assert that the swastika does not belong to Nazis, has no antisemitic and evil meaning, and is not tainted by their use of it. Indigenous people groups who value that symbol in their own cultures have reacted differently. For example, some Desi cultures still use it, but the Navajo people do not, because of the Nazi implications it now irrevocably carries. If you are white, you DO NOT get to "reclaim" the swastika, no matter how much you love other cultures.
While I understand that these symbols and others are important to my pagan and wiccan friends, you can't deny the darker meanings that they carry. If you are going to be using them, you are accepting upon yourself an obligation to educate people about their meanings - ALL their meanings - and to make it abundantly clear that you are an ally of the Jewish people.
Unfortunately, when I see people wearing or using Germanic symbols, I WILL think "I wonder if they're a Nazi" every single time. Every time. It is an inescapable reality that these symbols are being used as silent dog whistles for hatred of Jewish people and other "non-whites."
If you don't want people to suspect you of being a Nazi, you have ONLY two options.
1: Don't use Germanic symbols
2: Make it FIERCELY evident that you are an ally to Jews, POC, and queer people
Gentiles, you are invited to reblog this post.
Antisemitism will not be tolerated on this post: specifically, do not speak over Jewish voices on the issue of antisemitism, and do not assert that the claims in this post are false.
I've been meaning to ask since i asked you a question... weeks ago now... But you mentioned that you work with Seiđr and its reconstruction. Do you have any good sources either bok or website, where I can find out more about Seiđr?
Yes, I definitely do!
Seiðr is very much a large framework within both my personal and spiritual/religious practices. Because of my devotion to it, I have thus collected a myriad of books and websites as resources to develop my own dogma on the subject and for reference.
A lot of what we know about the practice is basically reconstruction from archaeology, historian research, Edda, many other primary allusions and today’s Heathens who have written collective-gnostic/ adherent works on seiðr-craft.
This, along with various other constructs and rites that pertain to Norsk “sending” and trance work.

— Tiwaz —
Tiwaz is the rune associated with the god Tyr, and as such it represents much of the same qualities as him. It is a rune of victory and honor, but also of justice and sacrifice. It embodies the idea of the phrase “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one”, and can be used to represent sacrificing now in order to prevail later.
This spell in particular is very special to me as it was one of my first successful spells when I started practicing in the 7th grade. It’s a perfect example of Sea/Lunar Witchcraft and Knot Magick!
What you need:
☾ a Full Moon
☾ 5 different colored embroidery threads - one color to represent the moon (white, silver, even yellow), one color to represent the ocean, a color to represent your birth stone, a color to represent the wish (red/pink for love, green for luck/prosperity, etc.), and your favorite color. The length of the threads is dependent upon the type of bracelet you choose to make–I did a double chevron, throwback to friendship bracelets (▰˘◡˘▰)
☾ A conch shell
☾ A symbol (a piece of jewelry that has sentimental value; could’ve been given to you by a loved one, or perhaps you choose a piece that represents the sea)
☾ Blue lace agate, which can be used as a wish stone, or stones that correspond with your wish
☾ Rain water, salt water, or sea water; I recommend water charged by the moon, your crystals, or blessed by Poseidon/Aphrodite/Selene/your patron
☾ (Optional) a Sea Altar or altar honoring a Sea Deity
What to do:
Take the embroidery threads and begin to make a bracelet of your choice out of them; it doesn’t matter what pattern you choose, be it chevron, double wave, diamond, etc.
While you make each knot, visualize your energy flowing into the bracelet. Charge it with your wish. I even repeated my wish as a mantra in my head during the process as a type of affirmation as well, focusing on the outcome of my wish. While making the bracelet (which, depending on the pattern, can take a while), have some ocean-scented candles or incense burning! Let the bracelet sit on an ocean themed altar when you aren’t working on it.
Upon finishing it, let the bracelet soak in a bowl of your salt/rain/sea water for 10 minutes. Use blue lace agate or your stone(s) of choice to charge the water beforehand–remember to research whether or not the crystals are safe to sit in water overnight! If the water hasn’t already been blessed, this would be a good opportunity to place the bowl on your altar, place an offering beside it, and ask a Sea Deity or your patron to bless it!
Wrap the bracelet around your symbol and place it underneath the conch shell for 1 full day
On the next full moon, place your bracelet outside in the light of the full moon.
Wear the bracelet until the wish comes true!
When I did this spell originally, I had confused the new moon symbol with the full moon symbol on my calendar by accident. The night it was supposed to sit out in the moonlight, I figured the moon had already risen and fallen by then, so I went to bed and had a dream about the full moon. The next morning, I woke up and noticed it had already started to take effect. I remember realizing that magick worked in strange ways, and I was astonished and how fast it worked–I highly recommend this spell for sea witches! Feel free to incorporate the appropriate herbs or an incantation!
July 22nd was sacred to Neptune, the god of the sea. Since this is when many people visit the beach, it's also a perfect time to do a bit of spiritual cleansing in the ocean. After all, the sea contains not only salt, which is associated with purification, but also moving water, which can carry metaphysical baggage far away from you.
Do this spell at sunrise or as close to low tide as possible. If you can, time it for a week after the full moon.
Glass jar with a lid
Stand barefoot in the sand, along the water line. Close your eyes and consider all the things that are weighing you down. What aspects of your life or draining you of your spirit? These things need to go away.
Imagine these issues trickling slowly out of your body, from your head down to your toes. Let the water wash over your feet, and as the tide ebbs and flows, picture it drawing your problems away with it, carrying them far out to sea.
When you feel refreshed, as though the ocean has cleansed your soul, slowly count to nine, then fill your glass jar with water. Take the water home with you, and if you need a bit of a booster later, drizzle the water over your toes in the bathtub, and send your problems down the drain.

Rán is Goddess of the sea in Norse mythology. Rán and her husband Ægir, (God of the sea) have nine beautiful daughters called “The Waves” each of which represents a different type of wave. The goddess is frequently associated with a magical net which she uses to try and capture men who venture out in to the sea which is also referred to as “Rán’s Road.”
“To the sky shot up the Deep’s Gledes, With fearful might the sea surged: Methinks our stems the clouds cut,- Rán’s Road to the moon soared upward.”

Baldr: The brightness of life. Let your presence be inspiring and beautiful to all. Allow your joy to radiate from within and become your aura. Bragi: Believe in the power of your words. Speak carefully with thought and precision. Let your praise empower and strengthen, and your insults dishearten and wither. Eir: Seek the cure. Help those in need, and offer comfort in whatever form you can. Reject the corruption of disease, any affliction can be treated and healed with the right approach. Fenrir: Destroy your chains and those who forge them. Never be cowed or submit in fear, reason should be met with respect but dominion with insurrection. Forseti: Deliver the beneficial compromise. Let peace be brokered and unnecessary conflict be evaded, good faith be honoured and deception be castigated. Freyja: Bask in your glory and empowerment. Let pleasure be a virtue, and self-determination be the basis of your strength. Revel in your emotions for they are your power. Freyr: Advance the endeavour of growth. Nurture life in all its forms and display the beauty of progeneration. Anything can take root and grow given the right conditions. Frigga: Provide and protect. Let all you care for be comfortable and safe, and no need be denied. The fire can warm but also burn. Heimdall: Vigilance and caution. A misstep may bring misery and an unheard word, disaster. The way forward is clear and danger is transparent, when the time is taken to identify it. Hela: Death is but the other half of life. Let stillness be, and quiet guide your thoughts. Endings should be neither sought nor feared, an end is but the opportunity for further beginnings. Idunn: Wisdom in youth. Let the words of babes ring with your consciousness and seek the truth held in their innocence, ignorance is found in the dismissal of the young. Loki: Freedom in fun and change. Do not be bound by norms and civility, evil is often disguised as order, and the fabricated as natural. The good thing is not always the common thing, deviation can lead to delight. Modi: Evolve and progress. Find no contentment in maintaining a status quo. Each day be better than yesterday, see the good of your forebear and strive to excel further. Seek, always, the betterment of your theory and actions. Njord: Ebb and flow, give and take. Action begets reaction, matter demands a void, for happiness there must be sadness, for gain there must be loss. Balance is a virtue, no one approach can suit every obstacle. Odin: Wise and learned. Always search for the opportunity to learn, wisdom is found in the diversity of life. Give your knowledge freely and be gracious in reception, a mind in isolation is a mind that does not grow. Sif: Be proud and know your worth. Demand your place and your right to exist in the world. Pay mind to fair criticism but reject detractors wholly. Take pride in yourself, and seek betterment for your own sake. Sigyn: Steadfast and devoted. Stand firmly for what you believe, keep loyal to that you love. Nothing worth doing is easy, no worthwhile thing is effortless. Love takes work, and ideals require labour. Skadhi: Justice through vengeance. Vileness be met with viciousness, the unforgivable can not be forgiven, though reason may temper rage. Covert, can be calamity, and war kept for a better day. Thor: Powerful protection. Vie for strength in soul and arm, to protect is to persevere against evil, contest not only in arms but in wills. To bring joy against misery, hope against despair, and a hammer against tyranny. Tyr: Honour and sacrifice. Victory is not always decisive, a small win leads to the larger success, a minor loss can avert the grander. Achievement can come in portion just as well as in entirety. Ullr: Mirth in contest. Appreciate fair competition and find joy in the fight, to train you must have a partner, to win - a rival. Now normally, I don’t make big posts or have calls-to-action. I’m supportive of the ones I see, and share posts on my social media’s, but don’t often make my own posts about them. But this is too big for any of us to remain silent about. The murder of George Floyd is yet another example of the society we’re living in. It’s one where marginalized groups are constantly attacked and subdued by the actions of the ruling (rich, white) class. We can’t just sit by and let this continue. BLACK LIVES MATTER and to not speak out or act when something so heinous is happening in front of our eyes cannot continue. Want to help the protesters, but can’t march or donate? Use the skills you’ve learned to make a change.
Cast protection and prosperity spells for the protesters:
If you’re able to cast spells, use what you’ve learned to protect the protesters from the violent tactics of the police. Give the protesters the strength and reassurance they need to continue the fight. Help them in gathering the courage needed to face such horrible backlash. Protection is one of the best ways to help if you’re hesitant about directing your spells towards the violent police forces. Let your spells be felt in some way rather than not acting at all.
Bind the police to prevent them from causing more harm:
This one is something many of us can do and if you’re against cursing then this can be a way for you to help even further. Binding the police who are attacking protesters can help protect them even more. Stopping them before violence starts or continues will be incredibly helpful for the protesters who are marching in the streets. It’s been seen that in many instances during these protests, police officers have been the ones instigating violence or harassing protesters to the point where they have no other choice but to react in a way police categorize as violent. Don’t let them do this. Bind their actions to where they can’t continue the violence we’ve been seeing.
Cast curses and hexes directed at police attacking the protesters and causing them serious harm:
Now I’m pro-cursing, but I make sure I have a clear target in my mind whose face I can clearly see. It’s important to also get a name of the target of your curse if you can. This makes it so curses can’t rebound somewhere else or harm the people trying to make a change. Make your target feel the negativity their actions are causing. Make them realize the hate they are causing and the grief they are responsible for. Demoralize them and give them repercussions for attacking protesters
Create sigils that you can share with your friends to family to protect them if they are protesting:
Protective sigils made by you with the intent to help the people around you are a great way to have your work out in the protest. They can help those around the person carrying the sigil and spread the intent of the sigil throughout the protest. You can also create a sigil to do the same thing and burn it or dispose of it in a way which destroys it to send your intent out if someone can not carry it in a protest.
Work with your gods and goddesses to protect the people marching:
Pray to the deities you work with, especially the ones who are associated with protection. In the Norse pantheon, these can be deities such as Thor (especially), Tyr, Freyja, and Odin (among others). Look into the pantheons you work with and the deities you know to see if you can ask them to give their blessings to the protesters. Always be respectful when you’re doing this and give them offerings if that’s how you honor you deities or dedicate some actions to them as thanks for their help.
As people who are part of marginalized communities, it is our duty to support these protests and bring about the change that is so desperately needed. We need to stand with our brothers and sisters to fight against the brutality that is so prevalent in so many areas of the world. Even if you don’t identify as part of a marginalized community, not speaking out against the brutality happening is the same as supporting its continuation. We need to do what we can. Add ways to help the movement that I haven’t mentioned. BLACK LIVES MATTER
Sea water
- cleansing, purification and banishment
River water
- movement, change and new opportunities
Lake water
- peace, contentment, self-reflection
Rain water
- creativity, inspiration, energy, cleansing, protection
Melted snow water
- transformation, new beginnings
Moon water (water that has been charged under moonlight)
- universal magickal properties, can be used in most spells for cleansing, purification, balance, and energy
Cleansed water (tap/filtered water that has been cleansed)
- again has universal magickal properties but not as strong as moon water. Mostly used for cleansing and purification.
1. Run tap water into an empty bottle and immediately pour it out
2. Fill the bottle again but this time seal the bottle.
3. Draw out a cleansing sigil. I use this one HERE
4. Tape it to the outside of the bottle.
5. Arrange four white tea lights and a long candle into a pentagram with the long candle at the apex.
6. Place the bottle of water at the centre of the pentagram
7. Light the long candle and use it to light the tea lights in a clockwise rotation.
8. Place a clear quartz on the bottle
9. Place your hand over the clear quartz and allow your positive energies to flow through it. Imagine the quartz like a magnifying glass and your energy the sun.
10. Finish your spell with your preferred method. I blow out all the candles and say “so it is”

Nazis are not welcome on this blog.
Nazis should not feel respected or safe.
Nazis aren’t smiled upon by the gods.
Nazis don’t get into Valhalla.
Nazis get to rot in Ginnungagap, alone, with the weight of their wasted, hateful life on their shoulders.
I’m done being silent on this subject. Nazis and Nazi apologists do not have my respect and will not be tolerated on this blog in any circumstance.
If you take offense to this post, you’re not welcome here either.

Norse goddess of the sea
I don’t speak with anyone for a week. I just sit on a stone by the sea.
Anna Akhmatova, from Plantain
… and there is something about the achingly bright expanse of blue that makes me feel infinitely placid, infinitely calm, infinitely spacious. Something there is about the ceaseless, unperturbed ebb and flow … about the vast masses of green-blue water … that heals all my uneasy questionings and self-searchings.
Sylvia Plath, from a letter
You would rather have gone on feeling nothing, emptiness and silence; the stagnant peace of the deepest sea, which is easier than the noise and flesh of the surface.
Margaret Atwood, from Eurydice
The sea has many voices, Many Gods and many voices.
T.S. Eliot, from The Dry Salvages
Look there: how she approaches impatiently over the sea. Do you not feel the thirst and the hot breath of her love? She would suck at the sea and drink its depth into her heights; and the sea’s desire rises toward her with a thousand breasts. It wants to be kissed and sucked by the thirst of the sun; it wants to become air and height and a footpath of light, and itself light.
Friedrich Nietzsche, from Thus Spoke Zarathustra
The sea is working, working in my silence.
Pablo Neruda, from Nothing More
She knows what she wants: she wants to remain standing still in the sea. And so she remains. The woman neither receives nor transmits. She does not need to communicate. She knows that she is gleaming from the water, the salt and the sun. In some obscure way her dripping hair is like that of a shipwrecked person.
Clarice Lispector, from An Apprenticeship, or the Book of Delights
I wish you a kinder sea.
Emily Dickinson, from a letter
