The clones really are a fascinating contrast to stormtroopers. And I donāt mean Finn and the First Order because they follow in the wake of The Clone Wars; I mean Imperial stormtroopers who dominated the Star Wars imagination first and the longest.
For decades, stormtroopers basically functioned like clones: they looked and sounded the same, even though we knew there were different people underneath the helmets they never took off; different faces, same personality.
Then actual clones basically inverted the model: genetically identical men used every opportunity to differentiate themselves, from their armor to their body modifications to their behavior; same face, different personalities.
The one place where the Venn diagram intersected was loyalty, but even then, they still inverted each otherās models. Clones designed to be unwaveringly loyal and obedient consistently questioned orders and their place in the galaxy. Meanwhile, stormtroopers from disparate planets and cultures unfailingly followed the orders of an impersonal Empire.
For all of Star Warsās faults, for all the ways in which they dumb down or gloss over traditional scifi modes and themes, I canāt think of a more thorough exploration of cloning, the attendant questions of identity and free will, and the sociopolitical and metaphysical implications of a race of genetically identical men, of sameness in difference and difference in sameness, than the clone troopers.

Rex is out of commission for an indefinite amount of time so command batch has to draw sticks over who's going to temporarily stand in and oversee his menaces.
It ends up being Wolffe and within the first ten minutes his hands are around Fives's throat.

[Jedi Maul AU] me and @cranityā was talking about a scenario where Maul and Kenobi get stranded a bit on Dathomir at the Nightbrother village, waiting for their ship to be fix. Maul soon found himself circling by curious younglings, he tried to act cool and ignored them at first but gave up. Now he just gushing over theseĀ exquisite little rascal because Maul have never seen any specimen like him before.

Darth maul is a good example of making an interesting menacing villain with a sad backstory without redeeming them
strongly agree | agree | neutral | disagree | strongly disagree Further, I think Maul is great at being incredibly sympathetic and tragic without redeeming him (in the sense of making up for his actions orĀ in saving his soul from the dark), that we can genuinely love him and ache for him, we can hurt for the abuse he was dealt pretty much his entire life, we can understand whyĀ he couldnāt climb out of the dark, without making him narratively right. Maul had a great character design, he has some absolutely iconic fights, he has an incredible story and he is genuinely menacing and legitimately awesome in a fight, heās coolĀ in a very legitimate way! But he is also someone who has been shown even by the Force itself (in Age of the Republic: Darth Maul) that he could choose another path, he could have been a Jedi, he could still make better choices, and who rejected that, because heās too afraid to admit to that possibility, because he doesnāt have the tools to do it, no one ever gave those to him. Maul is amazing because thereās so much there to examine that has so much sympathy, like I really think underneath it all heās incredibly lonely--he latches on to Savage, to Ezra, to Eldra Kaitis, even to Ahsoka to a degree, because he wants companionship and the only thing he knows what to do with that feeling is to try to force those people into his worldview, to beat them down because he thinks thatās the only way he can have any kind of real connection. It also helps that Maul can be genuinely funny a character, like some of the fandom silliness around the character is hilarious, so you know when a character can make you laugh, can make you cry, and can make you frustrated, all at the same time, you know theyāre a great character.
Maulās finally got someone to remind him to brush his teeth in my jedi!Maul AU. Seriously, Maul, please do it.
