the big three questions of media analysis: what the author wanted to say, what they actually said, and what they didn’t know they were saying
AND DO YOU HAVE ANY MCSR FIC RECS. FORGOT TO ASK
thank you for the asks! i mostly do my mcsr stuff on my sideblog but since you’re here anon i do have a few (and i will get to the other ask in a bit) i hope you don't mind incomplete fics, because i have quite a few of those in here. anyways, in no particular order:
A Field Guide to Speedrunners by loanword. honestly you should go and read all of tri's stuff but this is the fic that got me. snappy writing style and a great grasp on characterization
Grave Digging by sumactic is an ongoing fic in their pjo au and i am so fascinated by what is going on with their nerdi and k4. good writing and a very interesting dynamic and i cant wait to see more
into this world in wonder from a starlight sky by confusedkestrel is a fun read and i love how they wrote the dynamic between poundy and fein. you should go read all of their mcsr fics tbh
coffee beans, fein-ly ground by igneousarchive and *megamind meme* no villains? by justpressX are two (unrelated) oneshots that i thought were fun.
[FILE: FALLEN ANGEL ET AL VS. SHOCKWAVE ET AL] by weareallstardustfallen is set in a superhero au and also makes use of mixed-media (or, text-based simulations of it), which i am always a big fan of
and now, time for a bit of hashtag self promo but my current ongoing series is outfished. its an au making use of my oc universe setting and can best be described as a modern-day fantasy with a focus on worldbuilding and intrigue. i also play around a bit with css formatting and in-universe documents if you're into that sort of thing.
there's a lot of good fics out there in the tag that i haven't listed here so when you have the time i would recommend just going through the entire tag. its not a terribly huge tag (though it is growing) so its a pretty manageable browse imo. (then again, my perception of reasonable may be a bit skewed. iykyk.)
Another theme that ends up coming up again and again in my work is the idea of self-preservation. Exploring the lengths people will go to to keep themselves safe. The threat can come from anywhere, and put anything in danger, and it might seem trivial but it doesn't matter because to that person, what's in danger is the most important thing to save.
I think in some ways decisions made in fear are the hardest to walk back. People become irrationally, overwhelmingly obsessed with protecting themselves when they think they're going to get hurt. In the moment, the fear makes it seem normal, so whatever lengths they go to to save themselves is justified. The excuse of safety has to make everything okay.
I also walked myself into a corner r.e. leaving out the context for Nerdi's big blowout scene because it's critical for everything else in the story 😭 dancing around the full scene is really kneecapping what I think I should and shouldn't include
I will say that Grave Digging's second chapter has a document 7 pages long that's mostly scraps of scenes
my mans running animation only got two frames
You're right, and I'm not saying this to disparage your point at all, but if someone cannot draw an Asian man as Asian because they value accuracy to his Minecraft skin more, that is racism. I don't care if he's a snowman, basic respect should take precedence. Even if he had a pure white skin, even if we'd never seen a hint of him in real life, this would still be true. Like I said in my tags, a Minecraft skin is not an excuse for whitewashing and it never will be.
You know what, I feel like being mean today. Can we stop whitewashing Hax?
I've been seeing a startling amount of it come up in artworks in the recent months, and honestly, that isn't cool at all. That guy is Asian. He is from Hong Kong. It is whitewashing to depict him with a skin tone as pale as or paler than your designs for white runners. It is whitewashing if you choose to depict him with pale eyes. It is especially whitewashing to draw him like that without any other ethnically accurate traits.
Learn to draw people of color. I'm begging you. Or at least don't draw an openly Asian man with a skintone three shades off pure white.
