My Headcanon that Jyushimatsu is Autistic and Here’s Why.

I’m not sure how popular of a headcanon this is but this was something I began catching onto and piecing together early on in the Osomatsu-san series. I’ve seen a few people mention the fact Jyushimatsu and even Ichimatsu are both on the spectrum of autism but never really gave valid proof from the show. Just opinions on their Stims and such and I felt the need to make one myself but with points from the Actual show and not just more headcanons to validate my reasoning.

Keep in mind I will be focusing on just Jyushi for now and depending on responses I might make one for Ichimatsu as well. Also, just to validate once more; This is a HEADCANON and not something that’s been determined in the Anime itself, please do not patronize me for my own beliefs if yours is different.

Jyushimatsu is the 5th brother of the sextuplets as most know and one of his most prominent trademarks and individuality he has character-wise is his energetic personality; Many a times he is seen outright bouncing off the walls in a literal manner. This will be my starting point.

Common behavioral traits of autism are acts of Impulsiveness, Compulsive Behavior, and repetitive actions. Jyushimatsu’s impulsiveness and desire to do without properly thinking through at times is seen throughout the show. From dancing to cracking jokes a lot of his bits and actions are based on total spontaneity and repetitive phrases, he even states in Episode 20 in “Iyami’s School” That it’s his form of comedy, but it still follows outside of when he’s trying to be silly and just going with his own fluid motions. A lot of his character is revealed throughout episode 17 “Jyushimatsu Festival” for obvious reasons since it’s centered around him and his relationships with his brothers.

Throughout Jyushimatsu Festival you witness the 5th brother go through various skits and scenes from disarming a gun by impulsively shooting it instead of cutting the wire, to turning 180 degrees by discussing a philosophical matter of trying to find out who he really is inside and out (Much to Ichimatsu’s discomfort). This in my opinion is a good fact to show even if someone in general, autistic or not, is childish or impulsive, they can still be very intellectual. In the same episode you can also see a form of repetition through words and actions, when after pachinko, Karamatsu bribes Jyushimatsu to not let the others know he won. He gets set on the word and statement remarking Karamatsu lost, he steps through the door and repeats it over and over until the elder has to pull him back out and inform the other that wasn’t the way to go about it. Another point on his repetition is shown in Episode 9 in “Jyushimatsu Falls In Love” It’s shown he follows a pattern throughout his day. He wakes up, Eats, Practices his swings, leaves, comes back at the same time everyday, goes to the bath house, then sleeps. Repeat. Even if he calms down in his actions significantly when he gets a girlfriend, he still sticks to  a similar if not the same schedule.

Following back to Episode 17 it goes to the brothers themselves trying to unravel the mystery as well, only to find Jyushimatsu has been this way since birth. Ichimatsu backs up the fact that “There’s nothing wrong with him, he’s just Jyushimatsu.” The scene ends abruptly with the brothers binding the book shut and going out for drinks to shrug off the uneasiness of this realization.

Other symptoms Jyushimatsu has that correlates with autistic traits is inappropriate or inability to sometimes socially interact properly, Lack of eye contact, and the focus on a few interests that he ends up being good or excelling in.

When it means inappropriate social interactions or actions, it doesn’t mean anything lewd or bad, just something some people would consider different; Like Jyushimatsu’s interest in dressing as a dog and going on walks like that with his brother, How he prefers to show instead of tell, and his penchant to repeat phrases such as “Muscle Muscle, Hustle, Hustle!” or baseball phrases that slide in and mean nothing on what he’s talking about other than just to show his excitement. In episode 15 “Interview” Jyushimatsu has an interview for a job and goes about it in a manner that would be the complete opposite of what most, if not all, would approve of. He lacks words, obeys the other’s commands but soon gets distracted and repeats again, and instead of discussing his few skills, he outright changes into a baseball uniform and has his brother pitch to him while he bats balls around the room to show the interviewer how good he really is.

The point on lack of eye contact has been seen throughout the anime as well. Where there are times he does focus on people, other times he looks cross-eyed or listening while seemingly four other things are zooming through his head at once. The whole point on his interests are show many a times as well. His main focus is baseball to the point that even if he had never played an actual game of it, as stated in Episode 25, he still makes it a point to practice and hone his skills everyday. Surprisingly he also has a special little talent in drawing, Shown in Jyushimatsu Festival when Choromatsu finds him running a small little vendors booth full of baseball-focused doujinshi and yaoi.

And there you have it. Some reasons why I headcanon and back the idea of Jyushimatsu being autistic. It’s not all, There’s plenty of other things I could bring up, But it’s 1 am and this was something that was keeping me awake thinking about it. Now that it’s written, my mind wants to sleep.
