I made a thing! I was thinking about this for a few days - because I realized that when I was young, I was also frustrated about being given the same advice over and over - without really knowing what it meant!!

Here’s 5 techniques which I have done before which have helped me grow as an artist, which are good for 5-minute warmups or just straight up challenges for your sketchbook!

Obviously, these are not the ONLY techniques - they’re just the ones I find most fun! And maybe they’re not the most ‘correct’ ones out there, but it’s better than another comic about practicing more, right?

Good luck to everyone on their drawings!

(im not very good at explaining things so this will be pretty picture (and gif) heavy, if you need anything explaining better feel free to ask!)

how to make a gif transition like this:

(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything

1. Make the gifs you’ll be using for the set, for this tutorial ill be using two random allison gifs i made. do whatever colouring you want here (unless you plan to use the same colouring on both gifs ig)

(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything
(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything

you’ll want them to be around the same length, maybe just slightly longer if one gif has to run over a bit more

2. Find, download (if you haven’t already) and duplicate your overlay into both gifs. In one of them: invert the overlay. set both to lighten

I’m using this overlay by @octomoosey for this tutortial (they have lots of great overlays to check out along with this one)

this is what the bottom gif settings looks like

(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything

(yes the overlay is shorter than the gif but it should work out okay - you’ll see why later)

and heres the top gif

(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything

and the finished results of both gifs

(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything
(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything

3. Save these gifs and reopen them, duplicate your top gif onto the bottom gif

(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything

4. Set the top gif to multiply, and adjust the gifs so this doesn’t happen (just drag ending the top gif to where the overlay finishes and it should work out fine - this doesn’t always happen when making these gifs - just something to keep an eye on)

(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything

(these are what my settings look like now)

(im Not Very Good At Explaining Things So This Will Be Pretty Picture (and Gif) Heavy, If You Need Anything

5. play it through to make sure its working, save it, and voila, you’re done!

If you ever wanted to know how to properly do a 2d character turn,  my friend max and I made a video showing you how to use the photoshop timeline to create a rotation of your characters.  this can be applied to almost any type of character design.  you can watch the full video here on our youtube page.

Tumblr really left “I can’t even” back in like, 2013. but if there’s gonna be one night that it’s valid to revive that phrase, it’s tonight.

2020 lacks the vocabulary. It’s a lexical gap in desperate need of filling. We’re bringing it back out of sheer desperation

So yesterday my friend and I watched Loving Vincent (an incredible movie, by the way, and the reason I’m on this van Gogh obsession lately). After it ended, we turned to each other like

a) hi im crying at how beautiful that was, how about you? yup? same

and b)

we should make a van Gogh painting right now

So we impulsively grabbed all the paint in the house, rolled out a big sheet of paper, and just dove in. This was our reference:

So Yesterday My Friend And I Watched Loving Vincent (an Incredible Movie, By The Way, And The Reason

She mixed colors for the sky, and I made a palette for the grass.

So Yesterday My Friend And I Watched Loving Vincent (an Incredible Movie, By The Way, And The Reason

At first, we tried to match van Gogh’s style as closely as possible. This corner was decidedly a success.

So Yesterday My Friend And I Watched Loving Vincent (an Incredible Movie, By The Way, And The Reason

She was a bit nervous to undertake the bold swirly tree in the middle, but I’d say it turned out great 👌👌

So Yesterday My Friend And I Watched Loving Vincent (an Incredible Movie, By The Way, And The Reason

At some point, though, we realized other influences might have been creeping in. These flowers? Solidly Monet.

So Yesterday My Friend And I Watched Loving Vincent (an Incredible Movie, By The Way, And The Reason

These? I don’t even know what style they are but they are my children and I love them

So Yesterday My Friend And I Watched Loving Vincent (an Incredible Movie, By The Way, And The Reason

In total, this took us about 4 hours, give or take. We had to stop when it turned midnight, bc…… sleep.

It didn’t end up looking exactly like van Gogh’s original (or even very much like it, for that matter), but as he himself said, “what is done in love is well done,” and we certainly made this with love and enjoyed the process immensely.

So Yesterday My Friend And I Watched Loving Vincent (an Incredible Movie, By The Way, And The Reason

And, if I may say so myself, it’s not bad for a first time.

Here’s A “life-hack” For You. Apparently Concentrated Kool-Aid Can Be Used As A Pretty Effective

Here’s a “life-hack” for you. Apparently concentrated Kool-Aid can be used as a pretty effective leather dye. I was making a drink while cutting the snaps off some new straps for my pauldrons and I got curious, so I tried it, thinking, “ok even if this works, it will just wash out.” Nope. It took the “dye” (undiluted) in about 3 seconds. After drying for about an hour and a half, it would not wash off in the hottest tap-water. It would not wash out after soaking for 30 minutes. It did not wash out until I BOILED it, and even then, only by a tiny bit and it gave it a weathered look that was kind of cool. Add some waterproofing and I’d wager it would survive even that. That rich red is only one application too. Plus it smells great, lol. So there you go, cheap, fruity smelling leather dye in all the colors Kool-Aid has to offer.

Kurt Vonnegut: 16 Rules For Writing Fiction

Kurt Vonnegut: 16 Rules For Writing Fiction

1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.

2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.

3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.

4. Every sentence must do one of two things — reveal character or advance the action.

5. Start as close to the end as possible.

6. Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them — in order that the reader may see what they are made of.

7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.

8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

9. Find a subject you care aboutand which you in your heart feel others should care about.

10. Do not ramble.

11. Keep it simple. Simplicity of language is not only reputable, but perhaps even sacred.

12. Have guts to cut. Your rule might be this: If a sentence, no matter how excellent, does not illuminate your subject in some new and useful way, scratch it out.

13. Sound like yourself. The writing style which is most natural for you is bound to echo the speech you heard when a child.

14. Say what you mean. You should avoid Picasso-style or jazz-style writing, if you have something worth saying and wish to be understood.

15. Pity the readers. Our stylistic options as writers are neither numerous nor glamorous, since our readers are bound to be such imperfect artists.

16. You choose. The most meaningful aspect of our styles, which is what we choose to write about, is utterly unlimited.

One of the major factors of lace is that it must maintain this very floral quality to it, which often relies on noticeable curves. Though a lot of lace contains straight lines here and there, the curves should always b the most significant!

Top 8 apps for 2D animation

Hello amazing people!

After the success of our Top 12 alternatives to Photoshop for digital painters and illustrators article, a few questions regarding animation programs appeared in our inbox. There are many, many apps to animate today: in this list we included 2D animation programs only, but these are the best of the best.

image

Formerly known as Flash, Adobe Animate helps you create interactive web-based content for games and ads using powerful illustration and animation tools.

Pros: user-friendly interface; many, many features; customisable layout

Cons: there are so many features that a few may remain hidden; it may get sluggish with big files (performance depends on the running machine); limited audio tools

Paid

Animation Pro is an app for iPad and it works like any powerful animation app!

Pros: drawing features; layers; lip-synching feature; affordable

Cons: the interface can look confusing to a beginner

Illustration or animation, CLIP STUDIO PAINT may be the answer to your needs. This program is powerful and full of amazing features and tools for the professional artist - and it made the top ten in our Top 12 alternatives to Photoshop for digital painters and illustrators list.

Pros: several illustration tools exclusive of the program; powerful

Cons: limited audio tools; limited script tools; limited technical support

Certainly one of the most used programs in the industry, Toon Boom Harmony is a powerful animation program for professional artists. It’s been used for well-known series and films, such as Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name, Rick and Morty, The Simpsons and The Princess and the Frog.

Pros: powerful tools; smart colour palettes; features for character artists; many tutorials

Cons: not easy to use; pricey

Moho Pro (Anime Studio) is a 2D animation software for professional artists distributed by Smith Micro Software.

We’ve already talked about OpenToonz, an open-source animation program (see this article).

While this version is the program customised by Studio Ghibli, Toonz was created by Italian Digital Video S.p.A., which distributes other important programs: Toonz Premium, Story Planner and Toonz LineTest.

Toonz is used by important studios, such as, of course, Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) and Rough Draft Studios (Futurama, The Simpsons).

Pros: open-source; powerful tools

Cons: not easy to learn; hidden features; “old” interface

Pencil2D Animation is another open-source program for beginner and professional artists.

Pros: simple, user-friendly interface;

Cons: minimal features

Another well-known animation program is TVPaint Animation. Perfect for frame-by-frame animation, this is a powerful program and may even be considered Harmony’s rival. Notable productions are Song of the Sea, Zima Blue and Kitbull.

There are two versions of the program, TVPaint Animation Professional and TVPaint Animation Standard.

Pros: powerful; many tutorials

Cons: pricey;

Paid

As always, let us know what you think of these apps and what we missed. We still hope you’ll find this list useful!
