Firefighter Tim Duffy was one of the many who responded to the call that day. He rode his bike in to the chaos and made it to the steps of the south tower as it began to collapse. He was toppled by debris and when the 110th floor hit the ground, he was blown down the street and into a store front. He cleared the store and came upon a FDNY search and rescue brother who had a compound fracture and needed help. He loaded him and another wounded person and drove them to the hospital where the trauma doctors asked “where’s the rest?” He went back to ground zero and drove the truck he had commandeered into the ground looking for anyone he could assist.
This year he rode across the country to raise awareness for veterans and first responders who suffer from PTSD. A former seaman and now retired from firefighting due to the damage caused by 9/11, Firefighter Duffy continues to serve America and help those in need.
I won’t ever forget where I was and what I was doing on that day and will ALWAYS remember 9/11 for the selfless acts of my brothers and sisters who answered the call on a day our country suffered such tragedy. The difference between heroes and superheroes is that heroes don’t have superpowers, they have huge hearts and an indomitable will. I want September 11th to be remembered for its heroes and their indomitable will that could not be stopped by terrorism.
