I was thinking about why Rose Quartz/Pink Diamond is so hated.

The obvious answer is because of the horrible things she did.

But the other diamonds did horrible things too…worse things even.

Pink abandoned Spinel, which is wrong, but Spinel was planning to kill every living thing on Earth to spite the son of a person who was no longer even alive. Yet, no one talks about what a monster Spinel is.

So many Steven Universe characters have hurt people, but we forgive them and are happy to see them redeemed.

So why not Rose?

Then, it hit me: because Rose’s redemption arc is told to us in reverse.

The first time we see Rose is toward the end of her life when she is pregnant with Steven. We see her appreciation for life and how full of love she is for Greg and her future child. She’s willingly sacrificing herself to bring a new life into the world.

But then, we start learning who Rose used to be, all her mistakes, all the people she hurt.

The loving mother in Steven’s video becomes a distant memory.

For those of you who hate Rose, imagine her backstory unfolded a little differently for us.

We’re introduced to Pink Diamond: she’s spoiled, bratty, immature, irresponsible, and inconsiderate.

She throws temper tantrums when she doesn’t get her way.

Not exactly an endearing character, right?

But one day, her tantrum injure Pink Pearl, her best friend. From that day on, she keeps everything to herself. Now we see her dealing with a consequence of her bad behavior.

Then we see how she’s abused by the other diamonds. We start to sympathize with her.

We see her try to save Earth. We see her trying to do the right thing for once.

But it backfires horribly.

She spends the rest of her life trying to fix it, but she can’t.

She meets Greg. Here is where Rose has the most emotional growth as a character. She learns what is truly means to be a “real person.”

Finally, she grows such an appreciation for human life, that she decides to sacrifice her form to bring her son into the world.

The reason Rose is so much more controversial than other characters who have done problematic things is because her story is told in reverse, her redemption comes across as a fall from grace.

But there are plenty of characters who have a fall from grace who are still not as controversial as Rose. The reason why many people are less sympathetic to Rose is because we never see how Rose reacts to her mistakes. We never get much insight into how Rose feels about herself and the things she’s done. We get small hints:

For everyone who hates Rose, I get why. But I think we need to remember who she became instead of who she was.

I’ve seen a lot of posts on my dash tonight about users who are threatening suicide, with other Tumblr members posting in effort to try to get ahold of them. I think you all should see this:

The coming out.

I took some time to board it and write, the gif is long but l really wanted to work on it and share it online. I hope that you will like it and for many, that it could be an inspiration if you are ready to make your coming out. Life is short, living it plently is needed :)

Also as l illustrated, Citron took the time to make his coming out, you need to be ready to make it. If you take time, years before making it, it’s totally okay. It’s just a huge release when you are able to do it. So once again, l hope that that you will enjoy this animation!

I saw a Garnet edit of this meme format floating around the tags and I couldn’t get this out of my head.

All jokes aside, this is a serious problem and I hope our boy gets the love and support he needs this season (corruption theory or no).

Do you ever think about how, despite being a victim of abuse and bullying, ryuji’s still a nice kid who’s polite to others and cares about his friends and his mom a lot?? It hurts so much to see atlus basically be like “lol fuck abuse victims” and turn him into the laughingstock that gets beat up for the sake of “comedy”. Lemme just re-emphasize the fact that he was physically abused by both his father and kamoshida, yet apparently it’s supposed to be funny that he gets beat up all the time?? (*cough* post-shido palace *cough*) like yeah ok lmao

Both him and the rest of the phantom thieves hold the same amount of anger towards shitty adults, but because he’s the most vocal about it he’s just interpreted as this angry kid with unjustifiable anger (by both the fandom and in canon), not to mention he’s never really fit in anywhere - being a delinquent and all - until he was part of the phantom thieves, yet even they constantly mock and insult him (mostly morgana) and like, you can argue all you want that he’s the same to morgana, but morgana literally started the whole “insulting ryuji” thing, and considering ryuji’s past abuse, it makes sense he’d retaliate especially if he feels he has the power in the situation.

You could also assume that his past abuse could explain his explosive behavior and his constant need for attention (wanting to tell people he’s a phantom thief n stuff) which, if it were actually supposed to be like that, makes him feel like a much more realistic character in terms of being an abuse victim, but that just makes me wonder what the hell they were thinking at the point when they were writing his character and decided to turn his abuse into a joke?? Ugh

Yet of course in-game everyone constantly shows sympathy towards morgana but with ryuji what do we get? Constant verbal and physical abuse, him getting sexually assulted (also by INCREDIBLY homophobic depictions of gay men, nice going atlus) but yeah im not sure exactly where i was going with this but my point is im incredibly disappointed with how atlus and the fandom both treat ryuji and that ryuji is an incredibly underappreciated character, i really wish people would look into his character for just a minute and realize he isn’t as bad as they think

Know what I’m salty about?

In all my art classes, I was never taught HOW to use the various tools of art.

Like yes, form, and shape and space and color theory and figure drawing is important, but so is KNOWING what different tools do.

I’m 29 and I JUST learned this past month that India Ink is fucking waterproof when it dries. Why is this important? Because I can line something in India Ink and then go over it with watercolors. And that has CHANGED the ENTIRE way I art and the ease I can create with.

tldr: Art Teachers: teach your students what different tools do. PLEASE.

I want one and one thing only from Future: emotional catharsis for our boy.

I mean we saw a little bit of that at the end of Change Your Mind, but the way he was acting during and even at the very end of The Movie… it feels like he’s still got quite a road ahead before he’s actually okay.

To gain traction keep in mind that most social media platforms sort primarily with the first 5 tags. So put the important ones first.

However,

Bite the bullet and post it.

How can you get anyone to like it if it’s not out there?

Even more important, how can you get anyone to like it if you’re not proud of it?

Stand tall with your work m’dude!

It won’t be perfect, it’ll never be perfect.

And guess what?

That’s FANTASTIC.

You can still learn, you can still improve, and you can still move forward. Thing is, the only way to do that is to do it. To put it out there, accept where you messed up and take it as a lesson moving forward.

Don’t make your comic for others. Make it for you because you want to see it made. You only need one fan, yourself. If you love what you do and keep moving forward people will notice. That draws people in more than any instantly popular 5 step tricks.
