Reblogs much appreciated!!!!
I’m like two months late with this wrap-up but here we go!
1. Genera+ion (2021) on HBO MAX
it’s about a group of gen z kids exploring their identity and finding family amongst friends.
my favorite show ever! “genera+ion” is the kind of story i dreamed of for years but never expected to actually get.
“genera+ion” went there and did that. multiple poc and queer characters! the different povs storytelling! the found family trope! teenagers talking and looking like teenagers! it’s not overdramatized, there’s no unnecessary trauma dumping, and no sexualizing teenagers. it is refreshing, relatable, and authentic. this is the best show recipe for me.
it was unfairly canceled by hbo max, but I believe it still works as a stand alone story and is worth checking out.
2. Daybreak (2019) on NETFLIX
it’s a post-apocalyptic reality where all adults had turned into zombies and the teenagers are left to fend for themselves. the main character sets on a quest to find his girlfriend with the help of his sidekicks, while trying to avoid getting eaten.
it’s a shame I overlooked this show when it first came out because it turned out to be a perfect fit for me. I’m usually not a fan of dystopian stories BUT this show has my favorite type of humor and way of storytelling. I’m talking breaking the fourth wall, insertion of animated scenes, absurdity and chaos all around.
I must admit, the main character wasn’t that compelling to me (perhaps that’s the reason why I didn’t pick up the show when it was premiering). same goes for his love interest. although I did like the unmasking of the manic pixie dream girl archetype. [slight spoilers] for most of the show the audience sees Sam and their relationship only from Josh’s perspective. but Josh turns out to be an unreliable narrator, when Sam becomes an actual person instead of the idiolized version created in josh’s head. I don’t think we get to see shows exposing their main male characters as “the nice guy” very often, so that’s the part of their story arc that I liked. [spoilers over]
for the most part I was much more invested in the secondary characters (wesley, turbo, kj, eli & mona lisa are my favorite). and I think the cast really is an ensemble, even though there’s a designated main character. other characters also get to exist on their own and even take over the narration.
i also much preferred the love story ivolving secondary characters. it came as a huge plot-twist surprise, and embodied some of my favorite tropes.
I watched this show twice and it goes on my all time favorites list for sure, along with genera+ion.
3. I know what you did last summer (2021) on AMAZON PRIME
if you’ve seen the 1997 cult classic you already know the premise. a group of friends cover up a murder, and a year later start getting threats from an anonymous who claims to “know what they did last summer”. however, apart from the familiar concept, the show is quite different from the movie, with a new setting and new characters.
most reviews i’ve seen of this show were negative, but I LOVED IT. I don’t want to spoil anything, so I’ll just say that the plot twists, and all the clues, and foreshadowings worked for me, and the finale gave me everything I wanted. it was so twisted and toxic and didn’t shy away from it, but it was also funny and entertaining. plus, I’m obsessed with the sapphic love storyline and the characters involved in it (almost as obsessed as they’re with each other but I’m not that unhealthy).
I feel like I can’t rationally explain why I love this show so much, maybe the writers and I are just on the same wavelength. I think if you’re gen z and you like messy characters (and thrillers, duh) you have a higher chance of enjoying this series.
4. Young royals (2021) on NETFLIX
it’s a series about a swedish prince struggling to balance the matters of the heart with the responsibility of the crown, after his parents sent him off to a boarding school.
this show manages to stay relatable and grounded even though we’re following a literal royal in a prestigious school. it’s real, vulnerable, and cleverly written. and it’s a beautiful heartbreaking love story. it’s been compared to “skam” so if you’re a fan of it (and good television), this one’s for you.
5. Betty (2020) on HBO MAX
a remake of the 2018 movie skate kitchen. it follows a diverse group of young women navigating the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.
it’s always great to see stories about strong female friendships, and this one also feels like a “found family” trope (which I love! and I mean, who doesn’t?). it feels very real as well, like we’re just watching people’s lives without them being overdramatized. it’s beautifully styled, and it makes you want to learn how to skate.
6. Cruel summer (2021) on FREEFORM, HULU & AMAZON PRIME
the action simultaneously takes place over 3 summers during the 90s. after it-girl kate mysteriously goes missing, another girl takes her place as the popular one, along with her friends and boyfriend. the narrative switches between two girls, while we try to uncover who’s telling the truth about what happened.
i’ve seen people compare it to “pretty little liars”. it doesn’t give me the same feeling, but I guess it does have similar themes. like, a popular girl disappears, only this one isn’t the embodiment of evil, there’s a teacher-student relationship but here it’s not treated like something romantic or desirable, and the lying - which is a big part of both shows - but here the build-up actually pays off.
some of the acting and dialogue can be a bit awkward, but olivia holt’s performance makes up for all of it. she carried this show. this is by far her best acting performance (with “cloak&dagger” being second).
7. The lying game (2011) on AMAZON PRIME
Emma finds out she has an identical twin sister Sutton, from whom she was separated at birth. Sutton asks Emma to take her place for a couple days to go look for their birth mother. However, things get messy when Emma discovers that Sutton has more secrets than she led on.
this might seem like an outlier on this list, being made over a decade ago and all. however, this is the third show with an “identity theft” theme here, so it’s very on brand for me.
as gen z, the only nostalgia I get is for the 2010s and back then I used to watch a ton of teen dramas that nobody cared about: “the secret circle”, “twisted”, “switched at birth”, “make it or break it”, “10 things I hate about you”, etc. the only show that escaped my attention was “the lying game”. I decided to fix that.
I missed the vibe of those shows that I used to watch as a kid. if you’re like me, you will enjoy this. just don’t come in expecting great writing, thought-out storylines, or high-level production. it’s full of missed opportunities, unanswered questions, cartoonish villains, and characters that come, disappear, and are never brought up again. (if anything, this show is like “pretty little liars”!) but it also has entertaining love storyline(s), and a likeable cast of characters. not counting Sutton of course, she’s a disaster. I know this is based on a book, but I feel like the success of “the vampire diaries” inspired the show’s twin sisters. the actress looks like Nina Dobrev, and they went with the nice sister vs evil sister. only here the mean one is underdeveloped to the point of her being completely unsympathetic. she just becomes an annoying villain with no real motive.
beware! the show leaves off on a cliffhanger so don’t look forward to getting the mystery solved, just enjoy the ride of a 2011 teen messy drama.
8. Shadow & bone (2021) on NETFLIX
based on the worldwide bestselling Grishaverse novels, “shadow and bone” follows an orphan Alina Starkov in a fantasy world full of magic, darkness and danger.
not being a fantasy fan, I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this. I don’t have anything negative to say. it seems like a great book adaptation. the level of production that went into this is incredible, the world-building and the characters are captivating. i’m looking forward to season 2.
9. Chucky (2021) on SYFY
the continuation of the “child’s play” movie franchise. a Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, and thus begins a series of horrifying murders in the town of Hackensack.
this show turned a bit too cheesy and far-fetched for my taste by the end. but i’ve been told that it kept the same tone from the movies (i’ve never seen one, this was my first introduction to chucky), so that must be good for the original fans. overall, I still enjoyed it. it’s gay, campy, and very disturbing. it’s also always great to see teenagers playing teenagers. safe to say, i’m never buying a vintage doll.
10. The girl in the woods (2021) on PEACOCK
Tasha and Nolan meet a mysterious girl who escaped from a colony that guards a secret door in the woods.
so, i’m not into watching scary stuff, which you probably wouldn’t think looking at this list. but somehow, despite being very creepy, this show manages to feel warm and safe. most of it comes from the relationships between the three main characters. this series also has the best portrayal of a non-binary character that i’ve ever seen. they get to explore their identity and face the issues that come with it, without it coming off as a trauma story. also, they’re the best effing character.
it’s a cute short thriller. bonus point, it has Sofia Bryant from “I am not okay with it”.
phew! this was fun! and here’s top 4 worst shows I watched last year: 1. bridgerton 2. ginny and georgia 3. one of us is lying 4. gossip girl (2021)
is there any characters u based the 4 mcs off (ren, ichi, ni, and san)
yesyes! theres a lot so let me list them 😭
starting off strong w ren…
the first inspiration behind ren (despite being a competent character in the novelization, he did have a lot of gaps that needed to be filled in) isn’t the real mark zuckerberg— rather jesse eisenberg’s portrayal in ‘the social networking,’ both are condescending geniuses who are socially distant (though in rens case its by choice, in marks choice its not)
additionally, just as mark screwed over eduardo in the movie (and presumably real life) ren was planning on screwing over walter simmons the moment he was no longer useful.
the most important similarity is both thrive on being the smartest person in the room AND being painfully aware of it, silently resenting those who they deem as less intelligent.
that’s where rens similarities with mark end, as he’s not a hideous bigot, mechagodzilla was ren’s idea whereas mark is portrayed as a thief who steals concepts, rens motivations are deeply personal while marks are for people to like him, and lastly, marks social climb is about status, rens is about control and a vendetta.
the second inspiration behind ren is chris manawa from fear the walking dead, both had morally up-right, no-nonsense fathers who tried to do the right thing even if their sons had a different vision of what was right. (ishiro and travis, respectively.)
they both became disillusioned and villainous, drifting away from their father’s ethics by choice.. additionally, they had a similar radicalization— each dealt with the death of their mother in isolation with little to no support.
however, the descent of chris is a common trope in twdu— survival, desensitization, and seeing the new world as a ruleless land where they can do whatever they want, ren’s descent is driven by vengeance, ambition, childhood frustrations, and a god complex.
ren is also more calculated and wouldn’t be foolish enough to meet the fate chris did.
as some of you may know, one of the main inspirations behind ghidorahs voice was smile 2, and a lot of the events in the early chapters of ghidorahs voice mirror smile 2.
for example, both ren and skye suffer hallucinations after a traumatic event— skye after the drug-induced crash, ren after the mechagodzilla electrocution.
the mirror scene where skye hallucinating louis (luis?) in the mirror is a direct parallel to ren hallucinating ishiro in chapter 3.
ghidorah parallels the smile entity, they’re both persistent, supernatural forces that feed on trauma and slowly erodes the mind. however, in ghidorahs case, he doesn’t kill ren, he molds ren into controller x by cutting off all of rens options.
both ren and skye try to navigate public scrutiny while desperately trying to rationalize what they’re seeing— skye as a pop star, ren as an infamous nepo-baby who destroyed an entire city.
ren waking up from a coma and facing legal/ethical battles echoes skye’s return from tragedy.
like skye dismissing morris’ warnings, ren dismisses bernies warnings because he finds bernie annoying and has a deep ‘theres a scientific explantation to EVERYTHING’ value instilled in him.
on a more comedic note, the next one is ryan howard. walter simmons is rens michael scott— a buffoonish, self-important boss ren both tolerates and despises depending on what walter could contribute in rens conquest to kill godzilla.
like ryan, ren is the ‘golden boy’ who is expected to rise fast but they both harbor bitterness and ambition, not caring who they have to step on to reach their goals.
however, ryan’s downfall is due to incompetence and ego— he’s lazy and self-sabotaging, ren is anything but lazy, rens downfall is more about flying too close to the sun, emotional instability and three headed alien forces.
in short, ryan is played for comedy, ren is steeped in tragic horror.
back to the tragic note, one of rens biggest inspirations was junior wheeler from chucky. (anyone who knew me in 2021 knew i was DEVASTATED when he kicked the bucket and was in straight denial for months) junior is manipulated by chucky, ren by ghidorah— though not to the same extent, as ren is intelligent enough to see ghidorah is using him, but an enemy of his enemy is his friend.. however, this doesn’t change how both are essentially possessed by malevolent forces praying on vulnerability.
both characters lashing out and transformations into killers are tied to emotional repression and manipulation.
additionally, from the dialogue to the context, ghidorah finally convincing ren his own humanity is whats holding him back is directly inspired by this scene
back to differences, juniors arc is short-lived and tragic, rens is longer and more strategic, involving tech, politics, and global stakes.
junior died as a teenager and didn’t fully understand what he was doing, while rens frontal lobe is fully developed, and not only does ren embrace what hes doing, he even tries to justify it.
lastly for ren is the salesman from squid game, both are lapdogs to greater powers (the salesman to the frontman, ren to ghidorah.)
they both project confidence and control but are ultimately servants trying to feel special in a system they dont control.
both (at least after ren adopts the persona of x) have a certain aesthetic flair, masking their true insignificance.
as for ichi, his biggest inspiration is..
princess blister from wings of fire! both are the most cunning and manipulative of their respective trios, they act as the ‘brains’ of the operation— always plotting several steps ahead, enjoying mind games and psychological warfare.
ichi and blister have a similar way of disguising their ruthlessness with eloquence, additionally, they both also don’t give the facade much effort— snapping the moment they get called out.
both were turned into dust 💀
both are narcissistic, believing they are the rightful rulers and vastly superior to those around them.
naturally, since ichi is inspired by blister..
ni is inspired by princess burn! ni, like burn, enjoys cruelty for his own sake— not mindless brutality, but calculated, indulgent violence.
both ni and burn are often underestimated as ‘the muscle’ and nothing else, but they show tactical awareness when it benefits them. just like burn using queen scarlet as a shield from glorys venom, ni is the kind of guy who would sacrifice anyone to gain an edge or survive.
the next for ni is nam-gyu from squid game (nam-gyu referring to other players as cockroaches was my direct inspo for ghidorah referring to humans as cockroaches), both are right hand figures— ni to ichi, nam-gyu to thanos, both act loyal but are really in it for their own gain and survival.
they both have a duality of superiority and inferiority complexes— they feel like they’re the most dangerous out of their respective groups, yet simmer with resentment at being second to someone else.
just like how nam-gyu only truly respects thanos, ni only respects ichi— but even then, that respect is overshadowed by envy and loathing.
both revel in mocking those weaker than them, even more so if they sense emotional vulnerability.
for san, as i stated in chapter 20, his main inspiration is..
agatha harkness! san, like agatha, enjoys manipulating the emotions of others (ren and wanda respectively) under the guise of charisma or humor.
both are showboats, loving dramatic reveals, flashy speeches, and being the most memorable individual in the room— even if that means coming off as a nuisance and being hated.
so. Chucky was cancelled.
Im honestly really upset, mostly with SYFY. They’ve used Chucky many times these past few months as advertisement, and now it’s just over? I want to continue the story just to make up for that goofy ending. I know the next film is confirmed, and I hope that is a continuation of the story.
That being said, we did our best with #renewchucky, and as Don has said many, many, many times in the decades we’ve known Chucky: he always comes back.
What the actual fuck?
People are fucked up, and chucky twitter is a sucky ass place of losers with no life.
I hope you’re doing well dear ❤️ shake it off
Sophie just sent me this and I legit wanna crawl under a rock, the fucking crazy Chucky Twitter people found me and I wanna die ngl
Chucky Twitter is full of assholes. They only screenshot post of people they don't believe to have Twitter themselves because they're fucking cowards.
Ignore them. None of them have imagination, and also the vast majority seem to ship Niffany so make of that what you will.
Some chucky art, ft the Kyle redesign I did with some more prevalent explosion/burn scarring (since I’ve never quite bought that she only lost an ear in such a huge explosion)
It’s also the one that Christine noticed 🤭🤭
I did a redraw of some Kyle fanart I did a year and a half ago 😎 pretty rad
Someone give me Andy Barclay content I’m surviving off of tumblr
okay so I watched the new episode. Season three spoilers!
As someone who’s been a huge fan of Chucky as a franchise for years now: the franchise is dying. I’ve been thinking it since the beginning of season three but this is what happens when a franchise goes on too long.
Season 1 and season 2 have something that season 3 lacks: likable supporting characters. Jake, Devon and Lexy are interesting on their own, but the supporting characters really make or break a tv series. In season one, we had the whole plot line with Junior and we had more of Miss Fairchild (I’m in mourning). Season 2, we had NADINE (NADINE ❤️❤️❤️) and we also had pretty interesting antagonists other than Chucky and Tiffany. Grant and Henry, I just can’t connect with very well. I sympathize with Grant, but I cannot stand Henry. Andy figured out this thing wasn’t an Angel sent by his dad in like a week. Why hasn’t Henry figured it out yet? It’s infuriating. The guy who’s always talking to the First Lady really is just pissing me off with his passiveness- it doesn’t help that we never see him in action. He reminds me of Mike Norris if he was uninteresting.
In seasons one and two, I was at least engaged with what was happening. I was following the stories because they were intriguing. I liked the characters and what they were doing. I just don’t feel the same way about season 3. This entire time I’ve been waiting for Tiffany, Nica or Andy and Kyle to show up (because they will eventually if we follow the formula).
I think my other issue with this season is the setting. The White House is kind of boring now since we see more of conversations than Chucky dicking around in the White House, other than that Devon Sawa kill (ranked number 3 now, that was pretty cool).
All of this being said- I still love this franchise and I’m so thankful we even got a television show. There are strong parts of season 3- Jake, Devon and Lexy actually have a strong bond now. Trauma bond, yeah, but they stand by each other and want to help each other achieve their goals. Jake and Devon are my favorite part of this season by far. There’s been some flack online about having those two have a storyline revolving around having sex, but they’re what? 16? 17? In this story? They’re curious, they’re teenagers.
Another part I like is everything with Tiffany. Literally all of it. I’m also enjoying Nica’s storyline, if it would go back to that. This season has a lot of cool settings that I wish were handled better, because Chucky in the White House is hilarious and interesting if it was done right.
For the short time we had her, Miss Fairchild was a highlight. She was hilarious and meaningful and I wish she hadn’t been killed off so early.
But these are just my thoughts- feel share to message me or comment here for discussions on it (please I need someone to talk to about Chucky)
I’m back from the dead 😋 good to see you guys! Haha!
IF ANDY BARCLAYS DEAD IM DEAD HAHAHAHAHA
if I was at the NYCC that would be me. I was telling Luna this earlier but I watched it right after a math test
Apparently, during the Andy fakeout at NYCC, some people were screaming, crying, and walking out. It's good to know the Andy fans are out there.
I’m afraid. I’m so afraid. Someone give me some comforting words PLEASE.
use this thread to drop ur chucky headcanons my friends ❤️ I’ll start
I think Jake, Devon and Lexy have sleepovers often in a room, especially when they all have nightmares.
WHO DARES????
I'm having problems with Twitter rn. The Andy slander is UNACCEPTABLE!
guys I really really miss Andy, Kyle & Nica and I’m physically ill about it
Once again thinking about the scene where Andy finds out Kyle “died” after Devon and Lexy rescue him from the colonel. It’s so heartbreaking and devastating to watch him break down sobbing and then go vengeful.
I’ve been thinking some more on possible parallels for Andy’s scene. The being tied to a bed with Chucky over him is a big one from Child’s Play 2. I think Kyle will come in and save him, just like with the original film.
A possibility in my mind for who he could be texting is Kristin DaSilva from Child’s Play 3. Maybe his mother? Kyle? Nica?
It’s been established that Andy has no girlfriend or friends (though I can hope for something to blossom between Nica and Andy). I find it super hard to believe he hasn’t seen the news with Chucky. I also find it hard to believe that Nica, Kyle and Karen haven’t seen it either. Even if they are hobbits (with bad habits /ref) would none of them feel the PTSD?
Something is off about Andy’s scene with chucky. I just KNOW it’s going to be the thing I’m thinking about until it happens.
I don’t think he’ll be possessed. It’s not possible. The only two he could inhabit by the rules established in Child’s Play are Caroline and Henry. I don’t think Miss. Fairchild will be possessed either, I think she’s alive, but I’ve completely covered that in previous posts.
Ms. Fairchild was so real the whole episode, but I don’t think she’s actually dead. We never saw her DEAD body. All we saw was her lay on the floor. Maybe she heard me screaming “PLAY DEAD PLAY DEAD” at the screen, who knows, but I don’t think she’s actually dead.
Also; the screen cap from the trailer has me sweating. I don’t think Andy’s the fake out death, but I’m not certain he’ll survive. Don has never been someone to do something twice, that’s why the chucky films are so distinct and unique in every iteration, so the people for fake out death that are off the table are Andy, Kyle and Tiffany since I don’t think he’d have the balls to kill Jennifer Tilly.
Ms. Fairchild actually seems the most likely person for it thus far. So far, of all the deaths, her’s is the one I am speculating about. It was a brutal kill, but there’s no concrete proof she’s dead and not just playing dead. The only thing making me speculate about my own theory is why she didn’t stop playing dead when two people walked in.
I think the agent guy is working for chucky btw
this is me, as the new Chucky episode starts. Today was good!!! Chucky responded to my comment on insta.
Please Don. Please just show me Andy and Kyle. I’m down on my knees. Please. I want to see my babies so badly.
posting for the first time since st4 vol2 came out 🤩🤩 now with an obnoxious amount of emojis so let’s go!!! Sad things I’ve noticed about the chucky series:
Andy has cried maybe two times in the 34 years we’ve known him. He’s 40, the only times we’ve seen him cry was once while he was six and another time when he was 40 years old over his older sister being presumed dead 🤩
2. Kyle never stopped searching for Andy because she couldn’t give up hope that he was alive. If she did that meant he was gone, but she wasnt
3. Nadine showed up to Lexy because Lexy was likely hallucinating due to the pills. Since Nadine had that talk with Lexy, it makes sense she’s the one who Lexy hallucinates.
4. Jake and Devon are that couple that’s only together because of their trauma. If not who knows of either would have had the balls to ask each other out.
5. CHRISTMAS EPISODE!! Except Chuckys back… somehow?
6. Kyle and Andy are likely not going to be returning to the franchise. They had a very finale-esque ending.
7. however, if they do return, one of them may die. Strap in your seatbelts.
Slasher oc!! Daisy brings out a fake sweet persona to seem more approachable while Cisne is very straight forward and reckless (also Cisne translates to Swan in spanish)
