parts one two three four

———

Lance wants to bolt the second they step out of the castle, but he knows better than that. So he waits, watching them carefully from the windshield (he’s got no better word for it, okay) of the bridge until they’re itty bitty specks. Then he throws on his backpack, grabs his scanner, waves to his pets, and runs in the direction the beast was last seen.

He keeps up a pretty quick pace for a while, not bothering to muffle his footsteps — he doesn’t want to startle the poor thing — and keeps his ears peeled for the sounds of a large animal making its merry way through the woods.

By ‘large’, he means ‘unfathomably gigantic’, because everything on this planet seems to be. Every tree is as wide as four Hunks, and taller than the castle. The various small woodland critters he’s seen running around have been at least the size of Pidge. Idly he wonders how the hell the evolution on this planet even worked, because all the flora and fauna seems to be gigantic, but the people here aren’t much bigger than humans.

He eventually starts to hear the sound of running water, and wastes no time following it. If he’s correct — and he truly thinks he is, as does Coran — this beast will be sitting carefully by the river’s bank, waiting for fish to swim close to it.

See, Lance is almost sure this beast is the planet’s equivalent to a grizzly bear.

And he’s positive it’s injured.

It’s the only thing that makes sense! He did some light research last night, and discovered that the planet is right in the midst of their springtime. He also discovered that, over the winter months, the planet’s city limits had expanded pretty dramatically, cutting into a large chunk of the forest. Lance believes the new city limits bled into the bear’s hunting grounds, and when the bear woke from hibernation in the spring and went looking for food, it ran into the new neighbourhoods. Startled, of course, it got defensive, only further terrorizing the people. Lance thinks that the bear was dazed enough to be hurt by the city’s armies, and now the bear is in pain and full of anger towards the new animals in its territory.

Of course it’s attacking.

Now, if only the team stopped a goddamn second to listen, and I wouldn’t have this problem, Lance thinks to himself, but pushes the thought away just as quickly, scowling to himself.

He forces himself to pause the reflection and save it for later, because it’s not the right time. He’s on a mission. He doesn’t have time to feel sorry for himself, let alone have time to be mad at the team.

It’s just as well that Lance pulled himself out of his thoughts, because straight ahead, looking at him warily, is the bear.

And oh, what a beast it is.

The dignitary — not to give him any goddamn credit, the bastard — was barely exaggerating. The bear is huge. It’s definitely not bigger than a castle, sure, but it’s big enough that Lance knows to keep a respectful distance, and right now the bear is sitting. He can’t imagine how scary it would be on a rampage.

For the first time, a tiny tendril of guilt crawls up his spine. The dignitary might be a pompous dick, but Lance is starting to realise that’s coming from a place of genuine fear, for themself and for the people they represented.

(Lance is still not going to kill the bear, obviously. It’s not the bear’s fault that it’s scary. But Lance is willing to admit that he did not handle the situation with the dignitary like an adult, and especially not like a paladin, and probably owes them a bit of an apology.)

“Hey, there,” Lance says softly, slowly swinging off his backpack and setting it down in front of him.

The bear growls in warning.

“I know, I know, you like your space. I’ll stay over here for now.”

Without looking away, Lance crouches down, blindly searching around the bag until his hand wraps around the two objects he’s looking for. He slowly takes them out and carefully sets one of them — a back of Altean-style dehydrated wild berries — on the ground in front of the bag. With his other hand, he pours a steady stream of water on the pouch, and he and the bear both watch as the pile of berries gradually grows in size until it’s the size of Lance himself.

Lance sits next to them, criss-cross-applesauce, with his backpack on his lap.

“These are for you,” he says, tone even. “I figured it might be pretty hard for you to forage or hunt right now. You must be hungry.”

Logically, it should be impossible for the bear to understand him. But it must like his tone, because slowly — ever so slowly — it uncurls, keeping a careful eye on Lance as it limps over to him and the berries next to him.

Its legs are the size of Earthen tree trunks. Its head alone is bigger than Lance. Its teeth —visible now that its mouth is open, tongue hanging out, salivating in anticipation of the wonderfully juicy berries — are sharper than any razor.

Lance should be afraid.

He’s not.

“Oh, you’re a beautiful thing,” he coos as the bear leans forward and takes a tentative bite from the pile.

The bear side-eyes him — a look that so clearly says ‘bitch, please’ that Lance can’t help his laugh.

“And you take no shit, huh?”

The bear grunts, apparently deciding the berries are safe, and then digs the hell in. It devours the pile so quickly that it’s there in one second and gone in the next.

Once the pile is finished, the bear turns to look at Lance expectantly.

Lance holds his hands up. “I got nothing!”

The bear huffs — no, really — and ambles closer to Lance. It lowers its great head down, and with a nose bigger than Lance’s head, starts sniffing Lance’s backpack for more.

Lance laughs again. “There’s nothing in there, you silly creature. No food, anyway.”

The bear finally decides he’s telling the truth — or, more likely, doesn’t smell any more food — and flops to the ground, looking to Lance in what he can only describe as petulance.

“I have no more food,” Lance says again. He reaches out hesitantly, slowly, and carefully rests his hand in between the bear's cute little ears when it makes no move to stop him. “But I might have more help for you, though.”

The bear rumbles. Lance takes this as an indication to continue.

“I noticed you were limping. Your front right leg. You’ve got some matted blood on there, too. If you’ll let me, I can clean that wound, stitch it right up, and you’ll be as good as new. That sound okay?”

The bear doesn’t make any more noise, but it does flop over on its side, leaving its right side up for access.

Lance takes a deep breath.

“Okay, big guy. Let me fix you up.”

He gathers up his bag and walks over to the wounded leg in question. He inspects it, but can’t really see the wound under all the blood.

“I’m going to clean it first, okay? I’ll get some river water first. That’ll be better than antiseptic.”

The bear grunts.

Lance grabs a clean cloth out of his bag — really, it’s a queen-sized sheet, but in comparison to the bear looks as small as the tiniest of rags — and soaks it in the frigid river, ringing it out as best as he can with his tiny human hands.

He walks back over to the bear and begins gently wiping away the nasty, coagulated blood from matted fur. It takes a while, but he’s eventually able to see the wound.

He does not like what he sees.

The wound starts cleanly, like it was a cut, but then looks torn, like the flesh was ripped. Lance isn’t sure what weapon may have caused it — that’s more of Keith’s thing — but knows it was certainly no natural cause.

“I’m going to need to apply quite a bit of antiseptic,” he tells the bear, even though the bear most certainly does not know what that is. “It’s going to hurt, but I need to do it, because it already looks a little bit infected.”

He opens his massive tub of antiseptic and holds it out for the bear to sniff. Its giant nose wrinkles, and then it looks pained, but it carefully lays its head back down on the ground and tenses its muscles.

Lance takes that as permission.

“Sorry, sorry, I’m sorry,” Lance babbles as he pours the horrible chemical over the wound and the bear roars in agony. “I know, I know. I know. It’s okay. Let it out. It’s done, now, once the sting fades.”

The sting must fade eventually, because the bear quiets, although it breathes heavily and remains tense.

“It’s okay,” Lance whispers, petting the first patch of uninjured fur he can reach. “It’s alright. The worst part is over, okay? That hurt so bad that you’ll barely even feel the stitches, okay? Just the smallest pinch.”

The bear whines, high and long, and Lance bites back tears.

This could all be avoided if people just used some compassion, for fuck’s sake.

He closes his eyes and swallows roughly. That’s not fair. It’s unlikely that anyone meant for this to happen, and it’s unfair for Lance to blame people. Sometimes life just sucks.

But it’s his job as a paladin to make it suck marginally less, and by God, he is going to do his job.

“Ready for the stitches, big guy? It’s the second-to-last step.”

Lance reaches into his back again and digs out the absolutely giant suture needle, so big it’s basically a weapon, and the beast-sized sutures. He gets to work carefully stitching up the wound, applying every ounce of Abuela’s sewing lessons into his furrowed brow and steady hands.

It takes a while, but eventually the wound is closed up neatly.

“Almost done,” Lance assures the bear. It makes an almost purring noise in response, which makes Lance beam in delight.

He takes two last things from his pack — some Altean antibiotic numbing ointment, and a mummy’s amount of bandages.

“This’ll be cold,” he warns, before spreading a generous amount of the ointment onto the wound. The bear audibly sighs in relief, slumping further into the ground as its muscles finally un-tense.

Lastly, Lance carefully wraps the wound in the bandages until it’s completely covered, then stands back, hands on his hips, to access his patch job.

“I think you look okay!” he says with a grin. “Try standing.”

The bear gets up using its three unharmed legs, then gingerly applies weight to the injured one once it’s balanced.

It blinks.

It applies more weight.

Suddenly it roars, in delight this time, and ducks its head to nudge Lance gently in thanks. Lance laughs, petting the creature everywhere he can reach.

“You’re welcome!” The bear makes that almost-purr noise again, and Lance sighs. “Now all we gotta do is convince this whole damn planet that you’re a big, giant softie.”

The bear pulls its head away, making Lance pout, and stares at him for a moment.

“What? You have any bright ideas? I, unfortunately, did not plan this far. I kinda thought something would come to me on the way.”

The bear grunts. Then it opens its great jaw, reaching for Lance, but it doesn’t eat him — it carefully hooks Lance’s hoodie in its teeth, lifts him up, and tosses him gently on its back.

Lance blinks.

“Well this is a — development.”

The bear grunts again, pawing at the ground. It starts off down the river, but not in the direction where Lance assumed its cave to be.

It’s headed to the city.

“What’re you — oh,” Lance cries, and is a little embarrassed to be outfoxed by a bear.

“That’s a great idea! If the people see you treating me gently, then won’t be so scared, and I’ll be able to explain. You’re so smart!”

If Lance didn’t know better, he’d think the bear seemed smug.

But he does know better, so he gets comfortable, organizes his pack, and starts planning what he’s going to say to make this whole crisis blow over.

https://archiveofourown.org/works/59077405/chapters/164835976

Final chapter of Arc 1! We did it! It was so fun writing this and it's now my longest posted fanfiction! I'm looking forward to Act 2 already because we're dropping that slice of life tag like it's a potato straight out of the oven!

So, I've mentioned before that I found I really like writing Hunk's POV. But this chapter was NOT supposed to be in his POV and I am so mad at myself for it.

I like how this chapter turned out. It’s great. I like how he comes in as an outsider and has to watch this all go down and how his anxieties stand out compared to the teens who don’t immediately go to worst-case-scenario.

But I’m MAD because I realized during my final edit of the chapter that it was supposed to be written from Shiro’s point of view.

Not only did I miss a chance to write from my favorite character’s POV but now he only got 1 chapter in act 1 and his next is chapter SEVEN in Act 2! That’s SEVENTEEN chapters between his POV chapters!

I have no one to blame but myself. I have everything so meticulously planned up to the end of Act 3 and yet I somehow missed this. The chapter turned out great so I don’t regret it so much as I’m baffled how I missed that so completely and sad that I don’t get to write from Shiro’s POV for so long. Ah well. So it goes!

Hope you enjoy!

I got the link to work again. But I don't know how.

You know what. I'm not going to worry about it.

Also ignore the fact that I can't stick to a consistent schedule for some reason.

Last chapter is up on Friday!

Not a whole lot of thoughts on this chapter? I finished reading The Starless Sea (Fantastic book. Slow to start, but if you enjoy setting descriptions you'll love it and Erin Morgenstern does a SPLENDID job of making the story immersive) around the time where I finished editing this chapter and in the acknowledgements she mentions the importance of describing smell specifically, so I started trying to work in one strong scent into future chapters.

Hope you enjoy!

I don't know how Tumblr works. Who knows how to make link posts properly. Not me.

Anywhizzle~ I'm done editing Act 1 which means I'll be posting a new chapter every week now until it's done! I'll be taking a short break while I get halfway through Act 2 so I have some wiggle room before I start posting again. Good news for that: Act 2 only has 8 chapters and I've written 2 out already so I don't anticipate the wait being very long.

Going back to the actual chapter I'm posting NOW ^^3 The goals were to show off Pidge's relationship with Keith and Shiro in this chapter. Pidge and Keith have grown close after training together for months and Pidge has met Shiro on occasion, but kind of know him more in a mutual friend kind of way.

This chapter is mostly sweet. Buuuut a little bitter when you consider what comes next...

Links are still acting weird, but here's the new chapter of The Stars in Retrograde!

This chapter FOUGHT ME SO HARD. By FAR the hardest chapter to finish of Act 1. I wrote this one in stops and starts, most of it while I was at work on various sticky notes, which made me mix them all up and they didn’t connect well and I originally wrote all the dialogue action as them talking over their meal so I had to go back and rewrite all of it to feature the puzzle instead. And then the pacing was bad. And then something was wrong but I couldn’t figure out what until my friend read it over and mentioned that it felt more like a Lance chapter than a Hunk chapter and man it just was not turning out the way I wanted it to. I was so displeased with it that for a while even thinking about trying to fix it overwhelmed me.

But I did it. IT’S DONE. I’m decently happy with it. There’s probably more tweaks I could do, but I’m ready to just be done with it and it’s in a place now that I’m not embarrassed to share it. Hunk has one more chapter from his perspective in Act 1 and I’m already halfway through writing Hunk’s Act 2 chapter and let me tell you those two I’m much more pleased with. The only thing is, uh, Hunk’s troubles in this chapter are nothing compared to what I put him through later :)

Man, it feels like I've written WAY more than I have, but that's probably because I spend so much time editing before posting. Still, Act 1 alone is turning out to be the longest fic I've ever written!

https://archiveofourown.org/works/59077405/chapters/162320320

Love this chapter. I'd been looking forward to this chapter, both to write and post, for a long time. My goals were "have Keith and Adam interact" and "have Lance and Shiro interact" and the plot kind of snuck its way in. Which, you know, funny story, this whole arc wasn't supposed to have plot beyond getting Keith and Pidge into space and yet here we are.

I especially liked realizing that Keith's dad would have once stood where he now stood and letting Keith have a moment of connection with him in that way. It's been a while so, as a reminder, Keith's dad died in the same year as Canon, but Keith was older by that point, so he had his dad in his life for a lot longer than Canon.

Also, I finished writing the rest of the chapters for arc 1 and am going through edits now and it's still chapter 13 giving me pacing issues but my friend recommended I look over it as if it were written as a diary entry so I'm going to try that next and hopefully get it into an acceptable place.

In any case, enjoy!

And with this chapter we're back on track!

Also, good news, I've finally wrangled chapter 13 into submission and just need to run it through my edits now! As soon as I was done with it I instantly got chapter 15 done and half of chapter 14 done as well. If I finish all the chapters early then I'll switch to posting a chapter once a week.

Anyway~ This chapter is just me giving poor Lance a break from all the drama I've been dumping on him, haha.

What day is it? What year is it?

I apparently have no clue because I missed posting last Friday! Goodness gracious, my apologies. Things will be back on schedule next week with chapter 11.

In the meantime, enjoy Pidge and Hunk interacting! I really wanted this chapter to feature Pidge, Hunk, and Lance interacting because they are all just so fun and feed each other's chaos, but I just couldn't come up with a situation where all three of them would get together naturally. There's a few ways I could force the three of them into a room together, but this chapter is supposed to focus on Pidge and Hunk's relationship anyway, so I'm not mad it turned out like this.

Also, I don't know if anyone's noticed, but I struggle SO MUCH coming up with chapter names and tend to dislike what I end up with. If you've got tips on how to chose chapter titles I'd love to hear them!

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works

It's here. The "Keith gains two new friends in one fell swoop" chapter. I was going to call it the "Keith acquires more than one friend" chapter, but I think at this point he would call Hunk a friend. Hunk is actually...probably the person Keith's age that he would call a friend.

So, to be clear about their relationship, if you were to ask Keith at this point what he thought of the boys (Shiro, Adam, and Matt) he would tell you that they're his friends and would probably call Shiro his best friend. This is true, but there's also a little more to it.

I like the idea that the Galra were originally a pack species. A lot of time has passed and evolution has occurred that makes it less obvious and Galra don't necessarily feel to drive to create a pack or bond as such, but they are comfortable with it and it satisfies a part of their natural instincts. Similar to how humans are a social species, but not necessarily every human needs a lot of socializing and many of us can choose when to socialize and for how long to satisfy ourselves, but in the end socializing and creating bonds is satisfying for most of us.

So, Keith, being half Galra, has some of those instincts. He isn't actively seeking out a "pack", but Shiro, Adam, and Matt are slowly integrating themselves into his life in a way where he would instinctually consider them to be part of his pack, especially since they're younger than him and he feels a responsibility towards them as a teacher. It's satisfying for him and so he's getting something out of it that simply socializing with other people has never given him before. Having a give and take at the beginning of a relationship helps center him around people who he considers to be strangers; which is why the start of his relationship with Shiro was so rocky. He wasn't sure how to interact when it was just Shiro talking with him, but once he had something to contribute (teaching Shiro to fly) he felt more comfortable around him long enough for them to establish a greater bond.

Anyway, this chapter is from Matt's perspective and I'm running my mouth on Keith headcannons lol. Matt's just a silly little guy. He's the youngest and he has simple needs and wants and does not allow anything to get in his way. Which, you know what, good for him

Enjoy the chapter while I untangle the MESS that chapter 13 has turned into

Writing Adam is so much fun. He barely gets any screentime or characterization in the show as is and in this fic he's years younger than in the show, which gives me a near blank slate to futz around with. I've been taking a lot of inspiration from other fanfic writers in his characterization, particularly CaffeinatedFlumadiddle's Storytime: Voltron is (Basically) a Disaster series which I just adore. Mostly I'm just having fun balancing a character who is serious yet sassy, nitpicky yet chaotic, and figuring out how he fits in with all the pre-established characters.

Pidge also is just so easy to write. She thinks logically, yet will take any chance to not be serious about a topic and turn a discussion into a joke. They're so fun to have in any scene and I get to practice writing someone with multiple pronouns at the same time.

In any case, enjoy the chapter!

So, part of planning out this fic was deciding how many scenes there were going to be and who was going to be in each one. I decided pretty early that I wanted to prioritize character interaction over plot devices, for a few reasons: mainly because at this point, everyone is already familiar with the plot, so I didn't want to just re-write scenes with different names.

What this led to is a pretty detailed excel spreadsheet of each scene because I want to showcase EVERY possible character combo (in pairs).

Because of this, I have more or less forced myself to focus on characters I wouldn't normally seek to write and found I actually love writing them.

I'm talking about Hunk. I love writing Hunk. He's precious and anxiety-riddled and Id find myself easily slipping into his narrative.

This chapter is ESPECIALLY fun because it's Keith POV and I have a lot of fun figuring out how to portray Keith "a cat-alien with non-human traits that are starting to become more prominent" Kogane in a way where you can tell something's weird about him but people are more willing to write it off than investigate it at this time.

So the two of them together in this scene were very fun to write. Even if Keith fought me A LOT for this particular scene. But, if the writing comes across as awkward at all, Keith is very off-balance here so I chose to think it just improves the POV voice ;)

I started writing this fic a while ago and only started posting when I had enough of a chapter buffer that I thought I could finish writing the whole thing while keeping to a posting schedule.

That being said, it's been enough time that I've forgotten bits and pieces of the earlier chapters and get to re-read them with fresh eyes right before posting them.

This one made me giggle quite a bit. In this chapter, I wanted to portray Lance and Pidge's relationship and I remember wanting to capture the energy of chaos feeding off of chaos. A sort of prelude to the shenanigans they're capable of when working together.

First chapter to a new fic I'm writing! I haven't posted anything in a while and I was nervous to put anything out for fear of not finishing the story, but I've got 12 out of 16 chapters written and outlines for the other four so I feel pretty confident I'll finish this one.

Check it out on AO3 here!

It's a Voltron Age Swap AU that starts at the Garrison, where Shiro and Matt are roommates at school, Keith and Lance are both pilots, Hunk and Pidge have just started building the ship to visit Kerberos, and Adam sets out to get a date with his best friend. Tags will update as I post!

For all fans of voltron

This is a message for everyone

After season 7 I will also leave the fandom .... but not for the reasons that you believe.

You want to stop watching the show because Klance is not canon ?! Because Axca could have a crush for keith ?! Because a character you liked without really knowing him is dead?!?!

Voltron Legendary Defender tells the story of teenagers and young adults discovering space lions and engaging in a war against aliens seeking to conquer the galaxy

This is not the FUCKING Love Story of Lance and Keith: The Serie !!

I understand that you can be disappointed but if on 13 epic episodes you remember only the elements mentioned above and that you go away because of that....

First, it's not you who decide the rest of the events of the show and then ... well ... GO AWAY !!! It will be good for everyone and Voltron deserves better as fans than aggressive idiots who are never happy of what they are given and whose only purpose is to see their ship become canon.

I'm sorry if I hurt more than one but some people should really question themselves (I'm talking to you) ... are you really REAL fans, I do not have the impression and if you want to leave like me, do it, but grow up and stop driving like spoiled rotten kids!

Dreamworks has brought you a great science fiction serie, BEAUTIFUL in the form, with endearing and intricate characters, epic battles, moving and funny moments, an eventful storyline and even a confirmed Lgbt couple for everyone to relate to... ( on 7 important characters ( paladins, coran and allura) one is canonically gay which is more than 14% of the group: it is perfectly realistic, not worth to imagine that all the characters are gay it would not have neither sense nor logic )...

..... and you are not happy, WORST you only see the evil and criticize it constantly.

Voltron owes you nothing and you are just ungrateful and aggressive towards the serie, the doublers, the staff and dreamworks that made you dream ...

I do not understand....
