Happy Holidays! π
Damian: Could you not stand so close? Youβre making me claustrophobic.
Anya: What does claustrophobic mean?
Becky: It means he's afraid of Santa Clause
Damian: No, it doesn't.
Anya: HO HO HO
Emile: Stop it, youβre scaring him!!!
After two months, the SxF manga is finally back! There's lots of interesting Melinda content here, so let's analyze!
I would say the main thing we learned about Melinda in this chapter reinforces what's been hinted at before - not only does she truly despise Donovan, but she's actually terrified of him. Her expression on this page when she thinks of his souless eyes says it all.
Whether her fear comes from direct abuse, knowledge of what unspeakable things he's done in the past, or something else entirely, has yet to be seen. This chapter also emphasizes the fact that she can't freely do what she wants without being fearful of what he would do. Just like at the end of the bus hijacking arc where she made Damian promise not to tell Donovan that she had come to pick him up, we see in this chapter that she can't let him know about her occult hobby either.
But while it's not clear what exactly Donovan does or has done to her to make her like this, what is clear is that her fear of him is what's caused this inescapable hatred of him, which was so strong that it caused her to also develop feelings of hatred for her son because he's something that connects her to Donovan. But like we've seen before when Anya first read her mind, her dislike for Damian is fickle; one minute she wants him to disappear, but deep down she loves him. While the first incident after the hijacking made her seem more ambivalent, this chapter reveals that her "good" side is her true intent - wanting to be a worthy mother to Damian and see him happy.
But her fear of Donovan is so gripping, that just the thought of confronting him makes her paralyzed with fear. She becomes too exhausted to continue and even starts questioning why she bothers with fortune telling at all. Perhaps it's an unconscious coping method that she uses to try and find a way out of the horrible situation she's in.
Hopefully we'll learn even more about Melinda in the next chapter when she has her appointment with "Dr. Forger." But another thing I wanted to point out in this chapter is reiterating how empathetic Yor is to Melinda's condition despite not knowing what's actually bothering her. And in recommending that Melinda see Loid at work, she's actually helping with his mission! (of course only Anya realized this).
And oh my god, the "grim reaper" joke had me cackling π Their expressions in the first panel were hilarious enough, but then Yor had to make sure Anya knows that she doesn't use a scythe! That's just so her.
Guess it wouldn't be a SxF chapter without one quiet, bittersweet scene, courtesy of Loid this time π
I also love how the boys are enamored with Yor. Even foul-mouthed Damian can't bring himself to be directly rude to her, so he just runs away π
I know a lot can be said about the Tarot card meanings, but this post is long enough already, so I'll leave that part up to others who are better with that type of analysis π I'm just glad the SxF manga is officially back! I'm relieved Endo is better and giving my best wishes that his health continues to stay good π€
SPY X FAMILY (CH. 108)
>> spoilers below
the fact that melinda is canonically a nerd is now my favorite thing about her! on one hand, it's a light and silly thing that makes her character feel more like an actual person. that she's interested in these things is giving big daydreamer vibes and i can totally imagine her geeking out about this stuff in the future with anya, who likes most things as long as they seem like an adventure lol.
on the other hand, it supports a lot of the common ideas about donovan, like how he's controlling and abusive of his family and how melinda seems to have it the worst. his presence loomed throughout the chapter, ever-present in melinda's thoughts like a ghost haunting her psyche. i wouldn't be surprised if her finding comfort in the supernatural is also her way of escaping from him, like a fantasy, a room in her mind palace where she's safe and can get away from the her scary reality.
and then there's her friendship with yor! it's genuinely so interesting to me that melinda seems so attached to yor and that she thinks so highly of her and her opinion, to the point that she'd even consider going to a psychologist at yor's recommendation even after yor mentions loid's concussive therapy lol. because while yor is perfection incarnate, she doesn't strike me as the type of person donovan would want melinda to have as a friend. and given melinda's strong resistance to anything her husband might find displeasing, it's amazing that yor is an exception. is this all really just because of how good and kind yor is? or is there something else? does she know something about yor that makes it safe to be friends with her?
i'm so excited to see what the therapy sessions will be like tho! i personally want this to be an exploration of her past, and i genuinely want this to end well for both of them: for melinda to feel better and to have her heart closer to the forgers, and for twilight to get his insight into the desmonds and to connect with melinda's experiences. i would especially love it if melinda comes back for multiple sessions and we see a change in her wardrobe choices from being extremely covered like now to being in more normal clothes as a way to show how she's gotten comfortable with loid and with talking about herself. i can also totally see endo-sensei using this as an opportunity to bring back more of twilight's memories of his parents, especially if he delves into the difficult marriage between melinda and donovan. (it's not that i think the relationships are similar btw i just love any and all twilight and damian parallels. imagining twilight empathizing with damian given his parents' bad marriage because of twilight's own experiences of having to listen to his parents fight is <3). i'd prefer this over a twiyor moment, but i'd be happy if we get one anway hehe

β» the writing in the picture is not mine. it belongs to one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) fanworks written by the lovely @piracytheorist!
a little out of the blue, this is along the line of things i've wanted to draw for fun since foreverβ¦! the latest chapter reminded me in a wayβ¦ apologies for the quick roughness, it's like practice, or a trial run for these βοΈ i'd like to do more and practice different things! like backgrounds...

IT.)
I'm finally home from my vacation and able to discuss the latest SxF chapter...all I can say is, I have a lot to say! I'll start with funny stuff first before I move on to analyzing...
Anya was especially hilarious in this chapter - where do I even start with her gremlin-ness? π First off, there's her calling the butlers "henchlings' henchlings" (in the Japanese version, I believe she's using some mispronunciation of εΌε, which means "follower")
Then she calls out Twilight for being, well, Twilight, even giving his behavior its own acronym π€£
She feels bad for George because his family isn't important enough for Twilight's aforementioned Twilighting π
And this doozy of a nickname for Bill!
In the Japanese version, she calls him something like "old man bully who hits people with balls" π
But joking aside, we get these profound words from Jeeves that seem to resonate with Twilight.
His words remind Twilight of the hypocrisy of his position: on the one hand, he agrees with Jeeves and wants the children to be able to grow up as they wish, without being burdened by the expectations of their parents. But that's exactly what he's been corralling Anya towards this whole time...doing whatever's best for Operation Strix, regardless of what may be best for her.
This scene reminded me of his musings when they first took Bond to the dog park; another case where he's aware that the morals he believes in are the opposite of his actions and yet...he continues with the mission.
I also think it's great that the other parents thank Anya for her bravery during the bus hijacking. Even if their kids don't act grateful, the parents should be on their behalf. Perhaps seeing this praise for Anya right before his eyes is what made Twilight feel even more guilt upon hearing Jeeves' words - he's seeing more and more what an exceptional girl she is despite not having the perfect traits for his mission, and yet he's still manipulating her (not realizing she's aware of the mission and wants to help).
But on that note, it's nice to see that George's dad and Becky's mom somewhat agree with Jeeves. As of now, I'd say out of all the Eden kids we've gotten to know, George and Becky seem to have the most decent families. I especially like how Becky's dad is adorably doting, to the point where he gets crushed when Becky asks Yor for help instead of him π Also Martha having to reel him in, lol.
But despite being an overbearing dad, at least he isn't quick to jump on Loid supposedly "seducing" Becky π He seems to not take it seriously, which is good since Becky is the one making the moves with her silly little girl crush.
Also Emile thinking Yor is pretty~ I'm surprised he had something nice to say about anyone connected to Anya, lol. I really want a chapter where Yor takes all the Eden kids on a playdate and they start thinking she's awesome like Becky does, even Damian.
Speaking of Yor, just when I thought she would be demoted to "background character" for whatever arc is coming, the last few panels give the impression that she'll have her next moment in the spotlight soon! Is she just destined to always catch Melinda when she falls? π
Not only are we getting more Yor/Melinda interactions next time, but also (hopefully) more of Anya reading Melinda's mind. I know there's theories floating around of how Donovan may be able to read minds and is possibly the one behind the experiments done on Anya, and that Melinda may have some psychic abilities too. Also some relation to that Arnold Crowley character introduced several chapters ago. I'm not good at theorizing, so I'll leave it to fans who are better with that kind of stuff π But I think they're all good theories and I'm keeping my fingers crossed we'll get more insight into Desmond secrets very soon!
...but unfortunately the next new chapter won't be until November 25th, so we'll have to be satisfied with theories for now!
This has been a most worthwhile evening π½
I do feel like Anya needs a partner. Both loid and yor have their superiors and more who know their secret professions and can help them when needed but Anya only has Bond atm. Perhaps Damian won't catch on or believe immediately in the next few chapters but it will be sooner than later. Maybe during a hardship or something far sillier than that will he take his chance on what she told him and will try to work with her via her psychic abilities.
She has been doing fine by herself so far but she is still so young! She needs someone to work with, to trust in and who makes a better partner than someone as levelheaded and as justice seeking as him! We know poor Damian also needs someone he can be vulnerable around too. They can both be what the other needs during difficult times. And who knows, maybe we'll be able to see Anya hone/ better control her abilities with his help!
inktober (twiyor ver.) day 19: formal wear π·
i've been doing some sketches since day 1, but i kind of fell out due to starting some bigger projects and dedicating myself to them pls- but i love having these prompts!
anywho, i just had to doodle this because the twiyor comic i'm working on is so anatomically advanced, large, and unfamiliar to me that i ran out of enough brain power (got a little tired of being confused) and i thought to myself "i'll take a break" with something a bit easier to draw atm ajdjs. i love drawing stuff like this β¨οΈ i remember seeing the tweet and instantly thinking "i need to see it as them..."

1 hour twilight sketch from ending 2β¦ i thought it turned out cool!
**Spoilers for SxF Chapter 106 Below**
I loved this chapter for so many reasons, but the one I really want to highlight today is that Damian may be insecurely attached, but he still has hope. And that he is so brave, in his own way.
Exhibit A: When Damian knocks on Demetrius' door and asks for help, I am 100% positive that Damian wasn't truly expecting a response from Demetrius. He's used to being ignored, especially by his own family.
But he tried anyway.
This is important, because most children of Damian's age who fall under the category of avoidant attachment wouldn't approach a situation like this where there is a possibility that they would be rejected. It speaks volumes to me that Damian has a sense that he would be turned away, but still he tries.
"I was hoping..."
Exhibit B: There is also this moment where we see that Damian wanted to say something, and then he silences himself before he can say anything.
(Don't cry, Lass, omg dont cry πππ )
Damian is initially afraid, so he silences himself, but then there is this moment, where he pulls himself together, and tries again.
Endo is so brilliant at drawing out moments of important decisions for characters. You can see Damian making the decision to say something, and gather his courage, but he only falls short once he actually succeeds at getting Donovan's attention.
Under the heavy gaze of the head of the Desmond dynasty, I'm not surprised that 6-year old Damian felt his resolve crumble.
But!
He reverts to another option: find support. Which leads me to...
Exhibit C: This one makes me sob, actually. In response to his wavering confidence, Damian looks to his mother for support. The woman who should be his primary caregiver, and therefore his primary attachment figure.
And she turns away.
(Tears, tears down my face, my boy doesn't deserve this π )
This is the third moment in this chapter alone that Damian does something that no other Desmond would dare: he seeks connection.
Damian tried to connect with his brother, his father, and his mother, all in the same chapter. He is the sole character that links them all.
All through Chapter 106, these are the moments that stood out to me the most, because it truly shows to me that Damian still has hope. Demetrius and Melinda are very clearly ingrained in their roles, and their behaviour is crystallised into what we see as the reader. It's obvious that this isn't the first time that Demetrius has rebuffed Damian's requests; and this isn't the first time that Melinda has ignored Damian's emotional needs.
I hear you wondering: Does Damian still have hope because he's still just a child?
Maybe. It's certainly possible. But I also want to highlight that Damian is insecurely attached; specifically showing an insecure-avoidant attachment style.
Children with this style of attachment typically experience high levels of emotional neglect, where their primary caregiver consistently does not meet their emotional needs. This leads the child to value independence, autonomy, and self-reliance, and to generally see others as untrustworthy.
We see this in Damian. He believes he is better, usually weaponising the Desmond name to place himself above others, but there is also an element where he believes he is better, because he ranks highly in the social hierarchy, and he achieves brilliant grades on his own merit, demonstrating his own self-reliance.
(Side note: Issues stemming from an avoidant attachment style can still coexist with self-esteem issues, but I'm trying not to complicate this post lol).
My point: Damian has experienced enough rejection in his childhood that he shouldn't even be trying with his own family anymore. But he does. He keeps trying. Damian still hopes that he can connect with his family, and I think that this is because this is a part of his actual personality.
On the inside, Damian is complex; he struggles with the weight of his identity, he is trying to find his place in the world, he yearns for attention and validation (specifically from his father), he finds comfort in believing that he is better than other people (even his friends), he struggles to handle big emotions, he prefers to work things through independently, and struggles to be vulnerable and ask for help, and he lies to himself about his big feelings so that he can avoid feeling them.
And my favourite thing about him: he still keeps trying. He gathers his courage. He gets back up. Time and time again he feels afraid, and time and time again he feels the fear and he tries anyway.
Damian is so brave, in his own way.
