Just some doodles I've done lately, I genuinely didn't expect to get as invested as I am in the show 💀
all the designs are still under construction of course, as always they are subject to change
BUT LISTEN- ARAJIN'S MOTHER HAS BEEN DONE SO DIRTY SO FAR RHAAA I NEED HER
my biggest issue with Bucchigiri, in general, is that a lot of things with potential fall flat or are derivative of other works (I'm saying this only because there are quite a lot of similarities between it and other works under Mappa's umbrella, most of them adaptations) I might elaborate on it in another post if I'm still fixated on the show and can't get past it quietly
AND HIS MOM. I WAS HOPING FOR MORE. SAME GOES FOR OTHER CHARACTERS. GRAAAH.
So rn I'm rotting in AU/rewrite hell, I might share in the future or just show the silly drawings.
EXCLAIMER!!! My interpretation is pretty different in some parts (like for example, so far I've made Senya and Ichiya into honki as they were explained in the beginning of the show rather than the wordplay on the word "jinn" that they went with) So don't be surprised if things don't overlap.
I think this is an interesting image to show in that it depicts a situation where Arajin isn't afraid to jump into danger and try saving Matakara. I think what prevents him from doing this at other times has to do with him fearing the malice of other people.
Part 2 of the Bucchigiri feature in spoon.2Di vol. 107
Spreads are read from right to left and include an story review of episodes 1-6, an interview with Mahoro's VA (Anna Nagase), and interviews with Marito and Outa's VA's (Nozomu Sasaki and Ryouta Takeuchi).
Part 1 of the Bucchigiri feature in spoon.2Di vol. 107
Spreads are read from right to left and include an interview with director Hiroko Utsumi, an interview with head writer Taku Kishimoto, and interviews with Arajin and Matakara's VA's (Genki Okawa and Yusuke Hoshino).
Langa Week Day 1: Found Family/Celebration
The other prompt is Cake and I like to think they brought a cake to the park and share it before a long afternoon of skating 🎂 @langaweek
Drawing is inspired by that one vine and the background image I used can be found here!
You can count on Reki to land himself in the hospital on Christmas Eve haha whoops 🏥🎄❤️🩹
elaborate excuse 2 draw Shapes ^_^
also I've been obsessed with Senya lately (reworking him as well)
THEY REALLY SHOULD HAVE LEANED MORE INTO THE FIRE INSPIRATION
Guess I'll just check in, have a redesign I made for Mahoro
she was the start of my downfall, my trojan horse you could say
now I got invested in making an AU/rewrite to suit my tastes mostly because there is a lot of potential but a lot of things fall flat, also some orientalist elements are uuuuuh... so I'm just doing my thing now ig
the fact that the bucchigiri writer actually used to carve stone stamps for the girls he liked and utsumi learning this and going "yes, i can use this for gay implications" is SO much
reading the spoon bucchigiri interview is so funny like the writer is just "yeah i actually wanted to make a cool mc but utsumi said it was too boring and asked me what i was like as a teenager and i was like 'lol i sorta sucked' and she was like 'PERFECT'"
the sillies inspired by this cute art
since they made mahoro's birthday valentine's day, i think it'd be fun to make matakara's white day/pi day and arajin's on april fools
I think I like the more subtle acting in this show. Like right here I think Arajin is understanding that when he talked down about Honki people (as a result of his own trauma about events in the past), he was belittling the sentiment keeping Matakara afloat without his brother. Before this he had been too absorbed in his own imagined problems to think that Matakara was struggling with something himself.
Bucchigiri?! has pacing of weekly webcomic with 20-30 pages being smashed into one episode
not bad, not good, definitely unusual, tone shifts all the time, but at least there's so much happening in each episode it's never dull
I still firmly believe that Bucchigiri?! is the anime that would have benefited from having 25 episodes. A lot of the issues with this series could be fixed if it had 2 cours instead of 1...
doodle dump!! ٩(ˊᗜˋ*)و ♡
☆. preview pics for the 8th episode of Bucchigiri?! + preview vid :3💥
i want mahoro to receive a love letter from a girl and actually be sorta flattered (this is how arajin remembers that gay people exist)
The way I'm seeing Bucchigiri so far is that the Honki people feel coded as homosexual and as a kid Arajin was really into being like that. But he was never open with that to anyone but his one friend, who was supportive and bonded with him over it. And in trying to defend that, that friend got mercilessly attacked while Arajin just ran away. So the way that Arajin so desperately avoids even Matakara is that he feels like that lifestyle reminds him of both that danger and his own personal weakness. And so he finds it safer to overcompensate by trying to act 110% straight.
ooh this is an interesting reading! i've thought about how fighting=an act of love in this show, but honki people=homosexuality could fit quite well into ara's character arc and relationship with matakara.
given how arajin is the protagonist of a brawling show, and I think it would extremely strange for arajin to completely reject his childhood desire to become a honki person by the end. they've definitely played up his refusal of the call so far, so i think we're going to see ara stepping up into his fighting anime protagonist role. if we assume that fighting, in the language of bucchigiri, is an expression of true self/feelings, i think we're definitely in for some kind of reciprocity of matakara's feelings on ara's part. i will be very surprised if we don't get a arajin x matakara fight by the end.
arajin has obviously buried his feelings about his past very deep and has tried to pivot his life in a completely opposite direction. I wouldn't be surprised if it's revealed that his obsession with dating is due in part to his trauma surrounding fighting; possibly him trying to emulate what a normal teenager does instead of 'embracing his true self' (ie. becoming honki). if this is how the story goes, there will be a definite queer reading to be had.
allegorically, the story would read as: young matakara is beaten up for being queer, arajin sees this and knows being queer is dangerous, he runs away and tries to compensate for his queerness by acting 110% hetero, matakara meets back up with him years later and tries to bond with ara over queerness, ara soundly rejects him and tries to distance out of shame, and ara (assumingly) learns by the end that being queer isn't shameful and embraces that part of himself (i.e. becomes a honki person.)
this all makes me a bit curious how mahoro's character is going to be dealt with going forward. i think there's a few things they're likely to do with her:
get over her brocon stuff and get with arajin at the end as his 'prize' for finally accepting his role as a fighter
arajin's moved on from focusing on girls by the end, mahoro gets with matakara
remain brocon to the very end
get over brocon stuff, become friends with arajin
i'm not a fan of option 1, i find it boring and a disservice to ara's and her character. i think option 2 is plausible given the romantic trope-y type scenes we've been seeing between matakara and mohoro, plus them bonding a little over their brothers. however, neither of them seem really interested in each other during those scenes beyond caring that other knows arajin. these scenes seem superficially romantic to me. i'm not really a fan of this ship so i wouldn't enjoy this outcome and i find it a boring thing to do with mahoro. option 3 sucks, but it wouldn't do damage to any other character at least? option 4 is my ideal outcome. it would allow mahoro to finally function outside of being in love with her brother and be a 'look how he's matured' moment for arajin.
there are a few appealing other options (like giving her kickass majin) that i would personally love the show to pull off, but unfortunately i don't think bucchigiri is going to do them with their limited run of 6 eps left. i'll be super excited if it proves me wrong, though.
sorry for the rambling here, thanks for giving me something to think about anon!
...arajin is basically a reverse utena.
as a child utena loses all hope, but when she fails to save young anthy she vows to become a prince so she'll have the power to save her. after their meeting utena also forgets that anthy was her motivation for wanting to be a prince in the first place, only seeing her in a dream near the end of the series. meanwhile as a child arajin vows to become a honki person, but after being unable to save young matakara he loses all hope and abandons his dream. he tries to forget matakara but is constantly haunted by the memory of him, both in nightmares and whenever he sees someone he feels too weak to save in danger. they both draw power from spirits that follow them, to varying levels of seriousness. they both wear masks of masculinity, but utena wears hers to chase her past while arajin wears his to escape his past. utena is constantly chased by men who want to use her while arajin enthusiastically chases a girl who uses him. ara-chan and utena-sama. am i making any sense.
i actually dont care about these guys at all ❌❌
bucchigiri is so funny bc like. arajin is a pretty flawed teen put into the wildest dystopic school of battle-hungry pretty boys who answer to no authority. if arajin were even the slightest bit interested in men he might actually play along with the premise of the show. he's drowning in a harem of eligible bachelors dying to fight him while simultaneously being given the main character powers needed to fight back, but he doesn't want ANY of it. arajin is actively nerfed by his heterosexuality.
For a show I don't see a lot of fans for, there is SO MUCH merch coming out. The announcements just keep coming. Bucchigiri Twitter page is full of them 😵💫.
I ain't complaining though. Gotta find some money asap.
As I just said in my last post the episode titles are based on song titles.
I was trying to figure out what the song for next week is and it appears to be a classical song called The Sea, the Tears, and I
I've never heard it before but that's the only thing that I see when I try to search things similar to the title.
My bigger concern is why they translated マジバブ as "Maji Croquette".... WTF do they think a Croquette is?
The majibab has been featured so many times in the series already they should know what it is. That is NOT a croquette.
(I'm also laughing because the mappa subs did okay in that screenshot but crunchyroll can't even get the episode title right)
