October 13, 2016 - Booted Racket-tail (Ocreatus underwoodii or Ornismya underwoodii)
Requested by: @zeledonia
These small hummingbirds are found in the Andes, in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela, and Bolivia. They eat the nectar of various flowers, including those of bromeliads, along with some insects. Females build tiny cup nests from plant fibers, down, moss, and lichens and care for the chicks alone. There are three subspecies with different tail lengths and colors of rackets and “boots.”
