“Napier’s bones are a manually-operated calculating device created by John Napier of Merchiston, Scotland for calculation of products and quotients of numbers. The method was based on Arab mathematics and the lattice multiplication used by Matrakci Nasuh in the Umdet-ul Hisab and Fibonacci’s work in his Liber Abaci. The technique was also called Rabdology. Napier published his version in 1617 in Rabdology, printed in Edinburgh, Scotland, dedicated to his patron Alexander Seton.” (Wikipedia).
Hi I'm indy I'm a new follower I plan on going in to computer science! Any advice ?
Hi there! Ohhh that’s so awesome, good luck! Computer science is an amazing subject to study! I was terrified at first because I haven’t had much experience in coding before going to uni, but you’re going to be just FINE trust me! ✨
💻 first of all DON’T BE SCARED YOU CAN’T CODE - that’s why you’re going to computer science in the first place, to learn to code. Of course, there’s going to be people who are pro-coders already, but don’t get intimidated by them, find your own pace and just do your thing! They’re probably repeating the year anyway or they transferred.
💻 I know in computer science you’re mostly like ‘why do I need lectures when I need to CODE not listen about coding’, but trust me GO TO LECTURES - I attended (almost) every lecture possible during my first year and it really made a World of a difference especially if you’re a newbie to all of this! You’ll meet the professors and you’ll know what they’re expecting of you and they’ll probably tell you some funny stories as well. Plus you’ll have more familiar faces on the campus :)
💻 DO SOME READING - there’s one lecture that I didn’t go to and that was a mistake I tell you. I didn’t go because the lecturer's voice was boring and I was literally falling asleep. But after I did some reading about the subject before the exam I realized his words were very valuable, but unfortunately if you already knew a bit about the subject, so if you have a subject that bores you - do some reading on your own and then go to the lecture. you’ll get much more information out of it!
💻 CODE AT HOME - after you’ve practiced some skills during the classes, go home and practice them again on your own. Try doing something useful or fun with it. Like make it print out “Yolo” in a circle (I did that, no regrets lmao)
💻 INSTALL ALL THE SOFTWARE DURING YOUR FIRST WEEK - install all the things you’re going to need during the year on your first week, honestly, please do! It’ll save you time later on. As soon as the professor mentions what you should install, note it down, go home, install it.
💻 PRACTICE EVEN REALLY SIMPLE THINGS - if you don’t understand anything just type it on youtube and you’ll find plenty of the video tutorials which ARE AMAZING. They helped me a lot with understanding some stuff I couldn’t get a grip of. And I know you’ll find some stuff that you’re like “I don’t need to practice this, this is trivial” IT’S NOT and you’ll get it wrong if you don’t code it at least once, just do it, it’ll take like 30s.
💻 here are some links which really helped me out and I would recommend checking out beforehand: * c++ step by step video tutorials with Bucky (Bucky saved me before the exam)* learn c++ in one video ( doesn’t really teach you c++ in one video, but there’s some useful stuff especially if you’re new to this) * sorting algorithms with hungarian folk dance (lmao these are really useful, I promise) * codeacademy (here’s just basic coding, but good to start with :) )* introduction to 3D graphics with Blender ( THE GOD OF BLENDER) and finally:* incredibly realistic wolf animation
HAVE FUN, RELAX AND GOOD LUCK! ✨✨✨✨ Hope this helped!

Okay but like, just imagine you’re majoring in History, your unrequited lover in STEM.
The heated debates because you are both far too passionate about your major. But the giggly and soft atmosphere numbs the seriousness.
The shitty puns and jokes. However you both have to explain them, and that’s fine because anything to hear them talk about something they love. Eyes twinkling, wide smile, the lot.
And you both take a vow to use science as well as history to discover if Napoleon was actually short.
Then you both fall in love. Even more.
And. Yeh. Just a thought.

dark academia critics
dark academia is like one of my favourite aesthetics however there are certain things/issues that bother me about this whole aesthetic
have you ever come across any dark academia posts that included any people of color. everywhere I go, all I see is elite white kids. I would die to see japanese/korean/indian /pakistani/ african/ middle eastern dark academia students often wearing their ethnic attires and embracing their cultures.
I know the whole theme about dark academia is ivy league/ rich elite students but imagine middle class dark academia srudents who are not necessarily clad in expensive attires rather wearing clothes bought from the thrift stores studying on scholarships, who own second hand books and antique/vintage items from some local flee markets or thrift stores.
not that I hate Greek philosophy but all dark academia posts do talk about is western art/architechture/ mythologies / history and philosophy etc. I would love to read and discuss persian poetry and history , south asian mythologies, japanese/Arabic/korean calligraphy, Muslim world's art and architecture.
why are dark academia students always protrayed as nerds, reserve, quiet, hates to have a social life, perfectionist who can't afford to get any grades lower than As etc like even the best students have their ups and downs, what matters is the passion and the will to do better. It's okay to have a life outside books, to have romantic dates, to prank, to hangout with yout friends, to skip classes, to be unorganized...its more realistic.
Spot the difference games are getting harder nowadays
If you guys didn’t hear about the doja cat situation here’s a break down:
Doja cat was on a podcast/video chat entraining racists and laughing at their racist jokes but also saying that she wanted to be fully white (she’s mixed btw) but luckily she’s thick and light skin. Also people are noticing she has a song out named dindu nuffin which is phrase that mocks police brutality.
Obviously when it’s time to be black, people use it for profit and clout. Like this is not an everyday issue being black in america. While we die in the streets singer/rappers like her use us for streams, get us to come to concerts and they make their money. Then what?
We’re broke. On government assistance. Unemployed can’t feed our families because of getting laid off in this terrible time. But y’all sit up here and “stan” these people. Not just putting it on doja there’s serval more artists just like her.
I get it, “it’s not that serious, it’s just music”. But it is serious when black sons, father, mothers are dying in the streets because of our color but people like her say they don’t want to be black but use it when it’s convenient.
Wake up.
“Half gods are worshipped in wine and flowers. Real gods require blood.”
— Zora Neale Hurston, Their Eyes Were Watching God
Black 18th Century
“I am America. I am the part you won’t recognize. But get used to me. Black, confident, cocky; my name, not yours; my religion, not yours; my goals, my own; get used to me.” Muhammad Ali.
I’ve been thinking about this since the death of Muhammad Ali, about the importance of black people in society through history and that even nowadays is hardly represented. And in the 18th century, even less represented.
So, let me tell you that finding this images was not easy at all. First of all, since my inspiration was Ali’s black pride, I didn’t want portraits showing black men, women or children in slavery or service position. I wanted beautiful, proud and powerful portraits. And I found them :)
Of course I also wanted some strong characters from tv and film and, you know what? IT WAS FUCKING HARD. Not because there are not many black strong characters in 18th century dramas (even though there actually are not many), BUT because there are not many images of them in the internet. Which, let me tell you Internet, THAT SUCKS.
For example, try googling “Abigail Jordan Turn”. Google it, I’ll wait here (or click the link). There are just a few images of any of both actors (Idara Victor and Aldis Hodge) and of those there are even less with just the two of them or any of them alone. There’s usually also a white character in that photo.
Of course Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s photos were easier to find, since she’s the main actress of “Belle”, it would have been ridiculous to not find photos of her. On the other hand, have you seen Amazing Grace? Do you remember the ONLY black character of this movie? Well, apparently there are only A FEW of different photos of Youssou N'Dour as Olaudah Equiano on a fast Google search.
Finally let me tell you I saw a Mexican/Spanish film this weekend called El Baile de San Juan (I’ll make a full post about that) about a pair of lovers in the last decade of the 18th century in the New Spain. There are two black characters, and one of them is this woman called María Fé (portrayed by Sylvie Henry) who is basically the link between all stories and characters, so she’s there the WHOLE movie, the story flows because of her. She’s got a son (Jacinto, portrayed by the beautiful Yotuel Romero) which is a small character. Her costume is very likely one of the most historically accurate from the movie and it’s gorgeous (from the earrings she wears, to her hair, her chintz print petticoat… everything). But you know something? The photo I posted here is the only decent one on the internet of her, no promo shots, no stills, no nothing. As if the only characters in the movie are the two (boring) main characters and the European ones.
And this is only a little example of the lack of representation nowadays of black people. But, let me let you go with this thought: this post is about black people and it was hard, if I would have looked for mestizo and mixed raze representation in the 18th century (and nowadays) I would have to stick to casta painting and a few American portraits just to get that in the media, we Latin people (and all people of colour) are pretty invisible.
But let’s better take a look at the photos from top and you all should reblog and add images of 18th century black people <3

weekly goals are bullshit. set yourself 3-day goals. you’ll be less laid-back.
don’t just mindlessly stare at words. before you start studying, know your approach to it. have a plan.
summarizing the concept in your own words is the key part of taking notes. don’t just copy things down, convert them into your own way of talking, your own vocabulary, no matter how dumb and unprofessional it sounds.
don’t let the “studyblr aesthetic” fool you. studying doesn’t have to be pretty. summaries and notes can be messy as long as they’re comprehensible. you can always rewrite and reorganize them later. (honestly, you better do. and you better keep them.)
don’t throw away the papers you’ve solved your problems in. staple them to the fucking textbook. you need to see them constantly. cause you’ll need reminders of how far you’ve came, when you’re feeling discouraged.
don’t be an armchair analyst for your issues. if you have an idea then act on it.
remember: the exact point where it becomes difficult, is where your growth begins. take a deep breath, and try to focus on the paragraph in front of you.
get off your high horse and understand that if you’re a zero, you won’t go to 100 in a couple of days. first, you’ll need to reach 30, then from 30 to 60, and then from 60 to 90. nobody is 100 everyday. that happens very rarely.
you need to have fun everyday. you need to have peaceful time every single day. even on exam night. especially on exam night, actually. so make sure you’ve studied enough so you can have some time to yourself.
once you’re on a roll and in need of some challenge to stay on track, start writing down your studying hours. tell yourself you’re not allowed to do less than 80% of what you did yesterday. whatever the hell it was, even just one hour. so if yesterday you really studied for like, say 8 hours, today your goal is to study for at least 6 and a half hours. if you can’t keep up with that, make it 70%, or 60%.
be forgiving of yourself. be kind to yourself. even if you bounced back and lost your streak. start again. as slowly as you did before. take your time. it’s okay, you were there once you can get there again.
the inherent romanticism of having a friend that checks on you even when you're being an emotionally distant shriveled up idiot
the song take me to church does not hold back at all no matter how long it has been since you’ve last listened to it it’s still like i will now cause your flesh to melt off your body
Hello!
I have created The Dark Room Collective for POC’s to come together to make bonds and to collaborate on books, poems, and more!
Once a month we will have discussion about that book of the month, with have biweekly poems/short stories/plays to talk about also. Members of the collective are encouraged to give suggestions and vote on polls; that will have 3-5 books to vote from.
How do I join?
Please message me! I will send the link through private message.

I know we all have lives as do I, but try to stay active in the chat. We don’t want a dead server or the server going to sh*t.
REBLOG!
Since I am getting attacked for telling the truth.
Remember when Captain America civil war came out and people started writing T'challa fics. Some black girls , including me, would ask some of these imagine pages to write an imagine with a black oc or a black reader, and we get:
" I don't know how to write a black people, sorry"
And we had to read those fics and use our imagination.
Then, when black panther movie came out, black writers finally got the representation in the media , that they deserve, and wrote fics dedicated to black folks that were feeling left out. What we got?
"Yall are racist for leave out us white people"
You see the pattern here? White people are always in the forefront of the media, and when they don't get the attention that they always get, we are labeled as the bad guys. I rest my case.
A SHADE TOO DARK
They say the way through is the way out.
They don't want us to weigh in--just to stay out.
A closed mouth is a silent shout,
But the people can't hear us when we shut our mouths.
If you speak up it's too loud,
Too black and too proud.
Just a shade too dark.
But there's a remedy for that,
Another bullet in a black back.
Souls turned desolate
Another bully lackin' black tact
Black man--white cop.
Gun cocked
pop, pop
Two shots
No thoughts
Un-armed, life lost
Cheeks turn
Hate costs.
Just a shade to dark.
Red handed as the blood spills.
Black bodies turned to buzz kills.
If the people don't acquit 'em you know the judge will.
And you try to tell me times ain't what they was still?
Just another ni**a in a white world.
They tryin' to wipe our history--white whirl.
Dismantling families killing off the "villain".
An infection to them "white folk" and them bullets penicillin.
Mass incarceration and gentrification too,
The wounds from the hatred have pierced us to the roots.
They try to call us thugs and force us from the roost,
But all lives will matter when the black ones finally do.
I guess we're just a shade too dark.
Watch Good Will Hunting.
Hey warning to all you chaotic academia peeps: the point of chaotic academia is that there’s no right way to do it. If you’re academic and you’re not pretentious, congrats. You can be a chaotic academic. But this whole “more of a disaster than you” and “flexing unhealthy habits and achievements” is just the same bullshit under a different name. You’re not superior for being academic. Check your ego at the door, please.
