I think we do the character of Icarus an injustice in how we tell his story. We always talk about the foolish young man who couldn’t be patient as he fled captivity and disobeyed the one direct order his father gave him. Youth is brash and cannot wait as it charges ahead too fast into ambition, ultimately leading to its own demise.

But that is not how I see Icarus. When I think of the story of Icarus I see a man who had been beaten down by everything. His father was a widely respected genius, the most brilliant architect, engineer, and inventor in the world, and he was his son. He lived his life in laboratories, likely always being whipped into shape by his father as kings and princes came to visit. Icarus is always in the background of the stories, we never see him until the story of the Minotaur with his father in a prison cell. But he was there, he was there and he wanted to get out. He wanted to do something, feel something, live his own life rather than merely pull at the shirttails of Daedalus.

And then imagine, if you can, if you were there building the wings with your father. They must have been huge to carry all the weight of a full grown man or boy. Think of lining all of those feathers, melting the wax down and placing one down right after the other. Imagine looking up at Helios’ light and knowing soon you would reach up to the heavens and taste the air that only birds have known.

Icarus fell in love, he became determined. He got a spark in his eyes and he knew what he wanted. His father warned him, go too fast, too hard and you’ll burn up. Get too close to the sun and the wax will melt, plummeting you into the sea. But of course he had to try. Every generation builds onto the backs of their parents, trying to get a little bit further, a little bit higher, a little bit better.

When they sprung from the prison Icarus soared into the air like a hawk born to it. Finally he was free of the prison cell and the lab, finally he was moving about and tasting something new of his own. He flapped harder and harder, like a runner reveling in the pain of his muscles crying out against the trials laid before them. He could feel his body crying out as his muscles were for the first time put to use. And he flew to the sun.

“Slow down!” Daedalus cried out. “Don’t get too close,” he said, but Icarus wasn’t listening because he was going to show him, he was going to show everyone. He looked into the eyes of Helios and Apollo and he wanted nothing more than to put his hand to theirs. He flew higher and harder and came closer to their light. This is what his life was created for, and he didn’t care whether he lived or died because the living was simply in the doing of the thing. It wasn’t about success, it was about the effort, and so he flew higher.

And then the wax began to drip, the feathers began to drift, and Icarus began to fall. Daedalus’s calls turned to screams of horror. He had warned him, tried to stop him but Icarus cared nothing at all for surviving if it came at the cost of never feeling alive.

Icarus began plummeting toward the waters and he turned one last time to look on the face of Helios. His golden light reached down as Icarus reached up, and for a moment it was as though he was holding his hand and his body was on fire with all of the sun’s burning glory.

When the waters consumed him, I like to think there was steam kicked up from the fire of his skin. The steam screamed out on contact and rushed out over all the waters, until all of Crete and the waters surrounding it was covered in dark clouds and rain began to fall. Icarus touched the sun, losing all he had in the pursuit of that one desperate goal, and when he achieved it the sun no longer shone the same way. He made a discovery that was only his to make, not his father’s or anyone else’s. That drive, that zeal, that need to chase something even when you know ultimately it will kill you to run that hard…that is the true legacy of Icarus, to my mind at least. And I wish that we told the story like that.

a compulsive obsession with cleanliness is beaten into us from birth, don’t curse, don’t scream, that’s dirty, don’t wear that, don’t touch that, that’s dirty, have sex, don’t have sex, that’s dirty, you made a mess, clean it up, your brother made a mess, your father made a mess, clean it up, pills instead of a gun, blood’s dirty, don’t play in a dress, you’ll get it dirty, open the windows and boil water with cinnamon and vanilla when da smokes, it’s dirty, older brother not learning he smokes til five years later, he can’t know, that’s dirty, don’t want things, don’t need things, desire can’t be pure, not yours, are you a virgin? have someone else’s hands taken that cleanliness? would that be so bad? of course it would, doesn’t he know there’s no cleanliness left in me to take? he doesn’t care, he’ll take my filth if it’s all i have, as long as he’s taking, as long as it’s all i have left, don’t love her, don’t touch her, that’s dirty, ive cleaned this kitchen ten times, it’s still dirty, da spilled his drink clean it up, he can’t know how bad he’s getting, this house must be clean, clean of him, clean of sin, clean of evidence at least, i’m not clean anymore but i try to be, i have to try, i can’t be dirty, and now it’s not about staying clean but only appearing to be, plato said there’s a class of woman who are receptacles for filth, a sewage system of women at the bottom, and i’m part of that, it feels like it, and now i’m a hopeless cause, i’m tainted, i’m dirty, and i can’t let it spread, what’s around me must stay clean, i can’t infect the world around me, i have to hold the filth inside and keep the world safe, but every woman is this way so what world is there to care for, because no one cares, no one sees, but they don’t want it dirty either, do they.

banish the idea that platonic love is a lesser form of love

if you go through life not investing in your friendships the same way you invest in romantic relationships, you will always be looking for love, feeling lonely, completely blind to the love all around you

friendship is not a lower level relationship. it is not a lesser form of love.

The Secret Book Club, where we read a monthly classic, discuss, and try to summon Dionysus! Okay, maybe no Dionysus but the book part is still a go.

How does it work?

We will meet and discuss on a Discord server. Every month I will make a poll for the book we read, three to five options that members may vote on! Members are welcome to make suggestions to add to the poll but only things in the vain of classic and academic literature will be added. We also do biweekly discussions for short stories and poems, along with a monthly dark academia inspired movie night!

How do I join?

There are only three things you need to do in order to join The Secret Book Club:

Make sure you’re following me @dcrkacademia!

Reblog this post to spread the word (we don’t want a dead club, do we?)

Message me after you’ve done so for the link!

Anything else?

Please only join if you plan to be active and to participate! Otherwise, what’s the point? This isn’t a chat room, although we do chat, it is a book club. Don’t join if you don’t plan to read with us! The only compulsory activity in TSBC is the monthly classic. Lastly, and hopefully obviously, drama will not be tolerated. A good rule of thumb: don’t be an asshole.

Next book: The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

he lays there

in that dark embrace

with salt coated lungs

and a rotting tongue

he still sees

the sunlight holding

his body and laying

him down so gently

and when the

cold rushes in and

he can do nothing,

that golden boy

will cradle his

body, crumbling at the

touch, and he’ll laugh

one last time

- because he could never outshine a star

hi,

*deep breath*

my name is nyx and i’m (re)entering the writeblr community. i’m into anime (haikyuu/atla/cowboy bebop), good music, computer science, space things, and creative writing. i specifically write/read ya, urban fantasy, poetry, mythology, fantasy/sci-fi or anything good.

this blog is mainly to get me to fall in love with my writing again and to push myself to write again and better. i’m probably going to be posting poems and parts of current works on here and reblogging other cool things.

please like/reblog/follow if you’re a writeblr and i’ll do the same for you.

p.s. the lowercase is on purpose

hi writeblr!!

i’m chey (she/her), a twenty one year old writer from the midwest! i’ve been writing for about ten/eleven years (i believe???) i’m not new to the community however i’ve decided to get back into it as i get back into my writing. honestly, i’ve lost touch with writing and i’ve missed it a lot so here i am!

i enjoy writing (and reading) ya fiction novels with poc and lgbtq+ characters (especially with some romance involved!!! i’m a sucker for love) i’m currently in the process of planning my wip and i can’t wait to share it with all of you once it’s a bit more organized.

feel free to reblog or like if you’re a writeblr!

i’m interested in making friends and meeting fellow writers! i love talking to people who share the same interests as me, so don’t ever hesitate to message me! we can talk about writing, or anything else :)

hello there! i’m a new writeblr joining the community and even though it’s a bit nerve-racking, the whole point of this blog is to push myself, so here goes.

my name is ayla, i’m 21, queer and a creative writing student in london. i typically write ya/na fantasy and romance and i have way too many active projects at the moment. my mother tongue is german so i grew up writing lots in german but when i was about 14 i really fell in love with the english language and i have always written in english since.

i have a habit of procrastinating and not writing when i actually should be. i really want to use this blog to write more, ideally daily, even if it’s just some ramblings about my day. i also want to attempt nanowrimo for the first time ever this year and want to write about my experience and progress. i want to be able to come back to this blog in the future and see how much i’ve grown as a writer and to share my journey.

i will post mainly my writing, moodboards, inspiration and hopefully the odd bit of writing advice (although i’m not sure i feel qualified to give out advice just yet).

i don’t have many writer friends so i’d love to get to know new people! if you’re another writeblr, reblog this and i’ll follow you! i follow from my personal blog @chamilsanya. thanks!

one of the best heartwarming scenes between Zuko and Iroh. The fact that Zuko is truly repentant and Iroh is unconditionally forgiving despite everything he’s endured. And of course, they can make you cry one moment and laugh in the next.
