Listen I'm a little drunk but... yarn crafts are so important. Textile arts are the backbone of society. All of us take our clothing and accessories and upholstery for granted and it's honestly shocking

I used to buy affordable t-shirts and they were comfy and nice, now I buy them in the same price range and they're sandpaper. They don't wick away moisture and the print comes undone after two washes. I buy denim and the crotch falls apart in months. I read about how modern Singer sewing machines are disappointing and then look at the delicate machining and the beautiful finishes on my 1857 machine and wonder if this is progress?!

Reblog if you're desperate for clothing that doesn't feel like sandpaper or if you like machines that go thunk instead of going obsolete in two years

Now that the leaves are changing, we're officially in spooky season. And so I gotta ask, why can't vampires just eat blood in media? No, they have to act like they're giving carotid fellatio, wasting more than they're actually consuming, drenching everything from jaw to bellybutton and rubbing their nipples they're so excited to eat.

I'd think after the first decade or so it would be commonplace to eat blood as a vampire. I've had steak so good it was sublime, but never did I want to roll around with it on the table, rubbing it against my naked flesh to become one with my dinner.

I had a sad today. Realized that with fall coming on strong, all the butterflies are going away. I haven't seen a colorful flitter bug flying around in days. Oh well.

One interesting detail I've noticed up in them thar hills is there's a surprising number of dudes that casually walk around with knives on their belt. Well, surprising in relation to an urban area. Dudes that have open carry knives in urban areas have multitools and are geardos. Here, it's because it goes on with the pants. And I'm all for this. I get to have my knife on me and not feel like I have to keep it secret.

Sharpfingers, Buck 110s, Schrade Old Timers, and Walmart knockoffs seem to be the most popular. Multitools like a Leatherman or Gerber seem popular with the fishermen and actual farmers.

How many porn bots can one platform contain?

Apparently in the last 18 months, we've been nominated as the county eccentrics. People whom I don't know from Adam are striking up conversation with me, knowing where I live. I was informed of the "eccentric" status relatively recently at the little country store down the road. This pleases me.

Moonshine. White lightning. Corn liquor. Local squeezins. This is still a going thing here in the mountains. Stills and knowledge are passed down through generations, with a special pride taken in their batches. And usually they'll offer a couple of flavors: there's the regular burning sensation or you can get a burning sensation with a fruity aftertaste.

It degreases car parts, cleans up paint, lights up rooms in lanterns, and helps you forget about your troubles for a time. Store bought "shine" is nothing close.

Just a bit of realism for you: at certain times of the year, Hobbiton would absolutely reek of poo when they were fertilizing the fields. Like, a smell so thick it would inundate everything. A poo smell.

Another event in rural life: going into town. Nearest store is a convenience store, with minimal food, drinks and cigarettes, and that's almost two miles away. Nearest grocery is almost 18 miles away, and they charge mountain tax (more expensive because they're the only game around). Going into town is a 45 minute drive, one way, and you group all your errands so as to save gas.

Today was 11 different errands, from securing a new V belt for the mower, to medical issues, to a grocery pickup. Nine hours later, and we're done. I'm exhausted, grimy, sweaty, and there's still food to put away.

If You're Considering Going Rural To Bake Pies In A Cute Cabin, Realize This Is What Your Life Is Going

If you're considering going rural to bake pies in a cute cabin, realize this is what your life is going to look like. Barring a sizeable trust fund, that is.

One thing all the cottagecore types either obfuscated or ignored: living in the woods in a cabin is work. The forest is perpetually trying to reclaim the cleared area. Firewood never lasts as long as you think it would, and it's heavy. We just had a really bad windstorm blow through, lost five white pines, and now I have to take a chainsaw and limb & buck them out. On top of that, there's cabin repairs to be done. Not much time for Instagramming bread or knitting.

Did you ever get a really nice notebook and then just put it on a shelf for later? It's a really nice notebook, and you don't want to waste it on grocery lists and to do notes, but a subject matter that needs nice paper. I have a small collection of good notebooks awaiting the proper subject, and over the years they find their use.

I swear to Crom the spam bots are out in full force. Barely Engerish sounding names, untitled pages, no posts, no nothing beyond a woman in a bikini picture. Good thing they got rid of all the dirty stuff though, right?

Nevermind the rather huge amounts of social pressure to comply with a draft notice (prison sentences, loss of benefits, good luck finding a job outside a few major metropolitan areas). Or the fact that everyone who fled the country to avoid the draft had no way of knowing Carter would pardon them, so basically had signed up to never set foot on American soil ever again. Or messing around with your draft status had an immediate and really bad effect on immigration proceedings of you and your family.

So if you did have the resources available to dodge the draft, do you think the Pentagon just reduced the number of inductees by one? No, they simply found a poor person, usually of color, that lacked those resources to take your place.

Watching the Last of Us, and so far meh. The third episode was masterful, had both of us crying, great story telling at its finest. The rest, basically generic tv action with farcical drama generated by asinine main characters. There's potential, they need to step things up.

Did you ever learn or maintain a skill set you either weren't supposed to or would be seen as anachronistic? And do so because it's interesting or fun? Like for example I'm teaching myself how to use a boatswain's pipe right now. Not because I'm a reenactor or anything, just for the funsies. I've taught myself how to pick locks, I'm slowly working on radio stuff with an eye to get a ham radio license one day, learned how to fight with a tomahawk and big knife, maintain the skill of orienteering regularly, amongst others.

Never know what's going to be useful when.

Interesting thingy I found. The whistle signals of the British light infantry. Since they fought in open order, commands had to be passed out of range of speech.
