raise your hand if you will never not be salty about the lack of development of a friendship between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark in the MCU

Captain America has always been about doing the right thing, even if it runs counter to orders – about standing up, even if the whole world is telling you to move. He has always been about individual responsibility and morality, not institutional obedience. That is who Captain America is.

But the Sokovia Accords wanted Cap instead to be a good little soldier. Wanted him to take orders, and not question them. Wanted him to surrender his autonomy, and be a tool, a weapon, without choice or agency or an individual moral compass.

Those pushing through the Sokovia Accords didn’t want Steve Rogers to be Captain America anymore;  They wanted him to be their own personal Winter Soldier.

This is your daily reminder that NO ONE asked anyone on this site or any other fandom site to be the goddamn fandom police.  If you don’t like a fic or if it has a trope that pisses you off or is “problematic”, there’s a back button or a block button you can use.  Hell, you can bitch about it to your friends or even on your blog.  But you do NOT get to attack the author.  These are real people you’re bullying.

(And yes, if you attack an author for writing something you don’t like or think has a “problematic” trope, you are a fucking bully, period. And if you ALLOW anyone to bully an author, or sit idly by while it happens, then you’re part of the problem, no exceptions.)

Cassini Spacecraft: Top Discoveries

Our Cassini spacecraft has been exploring Saturn, its stunning rings and its strange and beautiful moons for more than a decade.

image

Having expended almost every bit of the rocket propellant it carried to Saturn, operators are deliberately plunging Cassini into the planet to ensure Saturn’s moons will remain pristine for future exploration – in particular, the ice-covered, ocean-bearing moon Enceladus, but also Titan, with its intriguing pre-biotic chemistry.

Let’s take a look back at some of Cassini’s top discoveries:

Titan

image

Under its shroud of haze, Saturn’s planet-sized moon Titan hides dunes, mountains of water ice and rivers and seas of liquid methane. Of the hundreds of moons in our solar system, Titan is the only one with a dense atmosphere and large liquid reservoirs on its surface, making it in some ways more like a terrestrial planet.

image

Both Earth and Titan have nitrogen-dominated atmospheres – over 95% nitrogen in Titan’s case. However, unlike Earth, Titan has very little oxygen; the rest of the atmosphere is mostly methane and traced amounts of other gases, including ethane.

image

There are three large seas, all located close to the moon’s north pole, surrounded by numerous smaller lakes in the northern hemisphere. Just one large lake has been found in the southern hemisphere.

Enceladus

image

The moon Enceladus conceals a global ocean of salty liquid water beneath its icy surface. Some of that water even shoots out into space, creating an immense plume!

image

For decades, scientists didn’t know why Enceladus was the brightest world in the solar system, or how it related to Saturn’s E ring. Cassini found that both the fresh coating on its surface, and icy material in the E ring originate from vents connected to a global subsurface saltwater ocean that might host hydrothermal vents.

image

With its global ocean, unique chemistry and internal heat, Enceladus has become a promising lead in our search for worlds where life could exist.

Iapetus

image

Saturn’s two-toned moon Iapetus gets its odd coloring from reddish dust in its orbital path that is swept up and lands on the leading face of the moon.

image

The most unique, and perhaps most remarkable feature discovered on Iapetus in Cassini images is a topographic ridge that coincides almost exactly with the geographic equator. The physical origin of the ridge has yet to be explained…

image

It is not yet year whether the ridge is a mountain belt that has folded upward, or an extensional crack in the surface through which material from inside Iapetus erupted onto the surface and accumulated locally.

Saturn’s Rings

image

Saturn’s rings are made of countless particles of ice and dust, which Saturn’s moons push and tug, creating gaps and waves.

image

Scientists have never before studied the size, temperature, composition and distribution of Saturn’s rings from Saturn obit. Cassini has captured extraordinary ring-moon interactions, observed the lowest ring-temperature ever recorded at Saturn, discovered that the moon Enceladus is the source for Saturn’s E ring, and viewed the rings at equinox when sunlight strikes the rings edge-on, revealing never-before-seen ring features and details.

image

Cassini also studied features in Saturn’s rings called “spokes,” which can be longer than the diameter of Earth. Scientists think they’re made of thin icy particles that are lifted by an electrostatic charge and only last a few hours.

Auroras

image

The powerful magnetic field that permeates Saturn is strange because it lines up with the planet’s poles. But just like Earth’s field, it all creates shimmering auroras.

image

Auroras on Saturn occur in a process similar to Earth’s northern and southern lights. Particles from the solar wind are channeled by Saturn’s magnetic field toward the planet’s poles, where they interact with electrically charged gas (plasma) in the upper atmosphere and emit light.

Turbulent Atmosphere

image

Saturn’s turbulent atmosphere churns with immense storms and a striking, six-sided jet stream near its north pole.

image

Saturn’s north and south poles are also each beautifully (and violently) decorated by a colossal swirling storm. Cassini got an up-close look at the north polar storm and scientists found that the storm’s eye was about 50 times wider than an Earth hurricane’s eye.

image

Unlike the Earth hurricanes that are driven by warm ocean waters, Saturn’s polar vortexes aren’t actually hurricanes. They’re hurricane-like though, and even contain lightning. Cassini’s instruments have ‘heard’ lightning ever since entering Saturn orbit in 2004, in the form of radio waves. But it wasn’t until 2009 that Cassini’s cameras captured images of Saturnian lighting for the first time.

image

Cassini scientists assembled a short video of it, the first video of lightning discharging on a planet other than Earth.

image

Cassini’s adventure will end soon because it’s almost out of fuel. So to avoid possibly ever contaminating moons like Enceladus or Titan, on Sept. 15 it will intentionally dive into Saturn’s atmosphere.

image

The spacecraft is expected to lose radio contact with Earth within about one to two minutes after beginning its decent into Saturn’s upper atmosphere. But on the way down, before contact is lost, eight of Cassini’s 12 science instruments will be operating! More details on the spacecraft’s final decent can be found HERE.

Today

Steve Rogers returned. The real deal. And so it is a good day.

What I don’t understand is why would he be suicidal in TFA? He obviously had plans for the future. He had a mission (there still was war and people who needed saving), he had a team, there was an amazing woman who he could have a future with. He was grieving after Bucky's death but he didn't want to die, he wanted to fight.

Ugh. If I read one more post in the Cap tag about Steve crashing the Valkyrie being about him wanting to commit suicide I may scream. So, in that vein…

Friendly reminder that the Valkyrie (aircraft, not character) was powered by the tesseract, which had, inside of it, the space gem, an infinity gem we’re about to get up close and personal with again here pretty quickly. As such it moved at extraordinary speed and stealth with technology completely unknown during the 1940′s. Hell, it would probably be unknown even in this time, through SHIELD tried their best to harness that power, re: Avengers. And it was made clear in Avengers that SHIELD didn’t know what the heck they were doing even in 2012.

Friendly reminder that the controls of the Valkyrie were damaged during Steve’s fight with the Skull.

Friendly reminder that Steve had no idea how to operate the aircraft nor did he understand it’s systems. Trying to figure out who to fly it in seconds (see again: extraordinary speeds) was simply not an option. Don’t believe me, the Marvel/MCU wiki describes the scene exactly that way here.

Anyone who thinks that Steve could have done anything other than crash it is severely cherry picking.

Steve Rogers sacrificed himself to save countless lives and I resent anyone trying to take that sacrifice away from him.

As a side note, here is the power of the space gem, described by Marvel themselves:

image

…do you see the part about increased speed? Okay then. I’m glad we had this talk.

About Zemo’s vision. He met Steve earier and much closer in Germany and it’s a reference to that time. As for the phrase itself I thought it was not about eyes exactly (or not only about eyes) it was more about this difference between Steve Rogers and Captain America persona.

When I watched TWS I noticed one thing. When we see Cap’s painting in museum it’s so perfect in every way. What we see is a very beautiful angelic blond boy, so pure with those sky blue eyes directed upwards. It doesn’t have character. Because they didn’t want him to have personality. They wanted him to be a perfect symbol. They just made him a set of averaged “perfect“ (in someone’s opinion) characteristics in terms of his looks and personality. And Zemo just says that CapAm is a big lie if Steve Rogers is so real and imperfect as any mortal human.

PS I really hope I expressed my thoughts adequately because I’m not that good at English

It’s amazing that some fictional characters can live their own life like that. In the hearts of real heroes. No stupid or cruel plot twists can change that.

Channeling his inner Captain America, cancer patient conquers toughest challenges
Landon Helff would spend every waking minute outdoors if he could, but he can’t.

@blessedharlot - a happy story to cheer both of us up. A young cancer patient beats his cancer using Captain America as his inspiration to never give up.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Audio Commentary:

“If you’re not a comic book fan, when you think ‘Captain America’, you probably think ‘jingoist’, a propaganda piece. But if you know the comics, every time something happens in the world, he gets to address it: the hippies, the civil rights movement, the Watergate. And our MCU Cap missed all that, he missed 9/11. So he gets to address where we are now without having seen what forced us to make these decisions. He did not have the same slow descent into the cynicism that we all had over the last 40 years. He comes out with fresh eyes. One of the great things in the comics that we hoped to replicate in the movie is that his reaction is never the sort of knee-jerk old man conservative reaction you would think the man dressed in an American flag would have. He exemplifies the spirit of America, not a party, not a government. He’s never going to fall on a political line. He stands for an ideal and he stands for principles that are translatable across the board. What he is against in this film is subversion, subterfuge and lies, that line between freedom and fear.”

So, like, here’s the thing. Good people make mistakes. They get emotional and act selfishly, and that doesn’t take away from the good they’ve done. Steve Rogers and Tony Stark are both good people who’ve done bad things. Too many people in this fandom (and everywhere) refuse to see the flaws in their faves. They refuse to understand the motivations behind anybody who opposes their fave. I say “refuse” deliberately, because it requires willful ignorance to decide either of these men are bad people. Quite frankly, all that shit can stay about 7000 light years away from me. It is completely unwelcome here.

“The Most Difficult Thing I Had To Achieve In This Film Was Creating The Fabric For The Captain America

“The most difficult thing I had to achieve in this film was creating the fabric for the Captain America Stealth Suit.  The Russos were very specific that they wanted a suit that was made of textured, woven, hard fabric like a Kevlar and not a printed stretch suit like you see over and over again in these films. But in reality it needed to be made of a stretch fabric that would allow movement and comfort, as well as the ability to be constructed into a more realistic military type trouser and protective top. I went through many incarnations of printed textures on stretch which then posed a whole new set of challenges and problems.  The HD cameras made raised textures strobe or moiré.  So finding the right one became a trial.  Then the printing ink would shine like plastic, which I disliked.  It took four months of research and development to create a texture that seems so simple and was yet, so complicated.” - Judianna Makovsky

Just to put this out there for other Cap fans, this week (8/16/2017) Marvel is re-releasing the first ever Captain America comic and the Cap story from Tales of Suspense #63 in honor of what would have been Jack Kirby’s 100th birthday this year…

Just To Put This Out There For Other Cap Fans, This Week (8/16/2017) Marvel Is Re-releasing The First

As we all know Jack Kirby, aka the King of Comics, was Cap’s co-creator and also a real-life Captain America who fought in WW2 in the Army in Company F of the 11th Infantry Regiment and served as a scout, it was while scouting that he found and helped to liberate a concentration camp. During his service he, unfortunately, came down with severe frostbite and almost lost both legs. Afterwards he was honorably discharged as a Private First Class and was awarded a Combat Infantryman Badge and a Bronze Star Medal.

The price of this comic honoring Kirby and one of his greatest creations is $1.00 for anyone interested in acquiring it.

Oh dear, don’t tell me there is a new wave of Steve-hating! All because his life was changed against his will??? Steve is a victim of hydra and people are hating on him for this? Like really?? It’s disgusting and should be pointed out. I’ve seen many posts defending Tony and Bucky about how wrong that people bashing an abused character. Doesn’t Steve at this point deserve the same discussion?

Scrolling through the Steve Rogers tag…

Ok block you and you and you and you and you and you….

Sigh.
