Two Steps Forward in the Search for Life on Mars

We haven’t found aliens but we are a little further along in our search for life on Mars thanks to two recent discoveries from our Curiosity Rover.

image

We detected organic molecules at the harsh surface of Mars! And what’s important about this is we now have a lot more certainty that there’s organic molecules preserved at the surface of Mars. We didn’t know that before.

One of the discoveries is we found organic molecules just beneath the surface of Mars in 3 billion-year-old sedimentary rocks.

image

Second, we’ve found seasonal variations in methane levels in the atmosphere over 3 Mars years (nearly 6 Earth years). These two discoveries increase the chances that the record of habitability and potential life has been preserved on the Red Planet despite extremely harsh conditions on the surface.

image

Both discoveries were made by our chem lab that rides aboard the Curiosity rover on Mars.

image

Here’s an image from when we installed the SAM lab on the rover. SAM stands for “Sample Analysis at Mars” and SAM did two things on Mars for this discovery.

One - it tested Martian rocks. After the arm selects a sample of pulverized rock, it heats up that sample and sends that gas into the chamber, where the electron stream breaks up the chemicals so they can be analyzed.

What SAM found are fragments of large organic molecules preserved in ancient rocks which we think come from the bottom of an ancient Martian lake. These organic molecules are made up of carbon and hydrogen, and can include other elements like nitrogen and oxygen. That’s a possible indicator of ancient life…although non-biological processes can make organic molecules, too.

The other action SAM did was ‘sniff’ the air.

image

When it did that, it detected methane in the air. And for the first time, we saw a repeatable pattern of methane in the Martian atmosphere. The methane peaked in the warm, summer months, and then dropped in the cooler, winter months.

image

On Earth, 90 percent of methane is produced by biology, so we have to consider the possibility that Martian methane could be produced by life under the surface. But it also could be produced by non-biological sources. Right now, we don’t know, so we need to keep studying the Mars!

image

One of our upcoming Martian missions is the InSight lander. InSight, short for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport, is a Mars lander designed to give the Red Planet its first thorough checkup since it formed 4.5 billion years ago. It is the first outer space robotic explorer to study in-depth the “inner space” of Mars: its crust, mantle, and core.

Finding methane in the atmosphere and ancient carbon preserved on the surface gives scientists confidence that our Mars 2020 rover and ESA’s (European Space Agency’s) ExoMars rover will find even more organics, both on the surface and in the shallow subsurface.

Hi guys!

Perhaps you’re tired of seeing other relationships/ships in the Steve Rogers/Tony Stark tag in AO3 or just not interested in seeing other ships in the tag, then feel free to follow these steps to help filter out those relationships/ships :)

Link: 7-Step Tutorial on how to filter out Characters and/or Relationships on AO3

Go to the fandom tag of the character tag or relationship tag you want to filter out. That’s the page that lists the works for the fandom.

Click on the pairing or character you want to filter out. The page should again list the works, and have an RSS button in the top right corner.

Hover over the RSS button. Depending on your browser, somewhere on your screen there should be a hover text displaying what the RSS button links to. That link contains a number. Note that number down.

Go to the fandom you’d like to filter fic in.

Apply all filters you’d normally apply (ratings, pairings, warnings etc…)

Enter the following in the Search Within Results field: -filter_ids:264659 but change that number to the number you noted down. Note: NO SPACES

Click Sort and Filter. RESULTS

Happy shipping! :)

We don’t trade lives

Jesus.

Just like people willfully misinterpreted Cap’s edict that “Every time someone tries to WIN a war before it starts, innocent people die” as being the same as ‘people trying to STOP a war before it starts’ now everyone is doing the same thing with “We don’t trade lives.”

That doesn’t mean people never die fighting evil.  It doesn’t mean we don’t sacrifice ourselves for the greater good.  It means we don’t let one of our teammates give up their life until we’ve exhausted all other options.

Bruce even spelled it out when Vision tried to make a parallel with Steve’s sacrifice. He points out that Steve didn’t have a CHOICE at that point in time.

Cap wanted to make sure before they killed the person Wanda loved that they exhausted all other options.  What a monster and hypocrite that makes him!

I’m sure if Steve had let Vision die there in Scotland, now everyone would be pointing out that he didn’t even try, that Shuri or Bruce could have helped.

SIGH.

#dontyoudare #stony #superfamily

I just saw a post about Tony, Stephen Strange, and Peter Parker tagged as Superfamily. So I thought I’d send out this PSA that that tag is already used to refer to Tony, Steve Rogers, and their Spider-son; and has been used that way for years.

May I suggest Facialhairfamily or Ironstrangefamily? Either way I’m sure whatever you guys come up with will be cool. ;)

i fucking love steve rogers and nothing any of you say will change that. i love him w/ my entire being and i’ll protect him at all costs bc he’s a genuinely good person who looks out for people and doesn’t just cater to governments who he knows are 99% of the time never looking out for the people. he hates bullies and he literally has the super soldier serum bc he’s a genuinely nice, kindhearted person who watches out for others no matter the risk to himself. mcu steve rogers is a kind man with a heart of gold who’s fiercely protective of his friends when they’re threatened. idc what any of you have to say!!!!!! talk all the shit you want about him but that doesn’t change anything about who he is and i love him

favorite Steve moment? (you can do top five if necessary)

Oh maaaaan. Argh. So many to choose from!

MCU!Steve:

1. Jumping on the grenade. Steve diving on the grenade is the moment where you see that he doesn’t even need the serum to be Captain America – this guy is 100% hero, pint-sized or not. He doesn’t want to be a soldier for glory, or out of bloodthirst. He genuinely believes he has a duty to lay down his own life to save others, and reacts accordingly without any hesitation. This is honestly the moment I fell in love with this goober.

image

2. On va voir. Not only does this moment tell us Steve speaks French – and I love to headcanon that he picked up a whole smattering of European languages while fighting, but the spiky sex hair and the glower and everything just…. unf. (Look, I had to have at least one gratuitous sexy!Steve item in here.)

image

3. The Triskelion Speech. This is such a poignant and quintessentially Steve scene. He believes every word, and genuinely believes people will step up, but he is also fully aware of what he’s asking them for and the cost. He doesn’t do it lightly. And it’s Cap’s strength that in believing the best of people, he’s able to inspire people to bravery and courage, and bring it out in others – even when situations are at their most dire.

image

4. The elevator scene. The flipside of Steve believing in people so much, is that sometimes, they let him down. The moments leading up to this fight, when we see Steve assessing and realizing something isn’t right are great. We see how quick Steve is to detect the signs, put the pieces together, and realize what’s going on. His awareness and his ability to size up a situation are on display here – and then, it isn’t shock or rage on his face. It’s disappointment. But he grits his teeth and he deals with it and kicks ass – not because he enjoys it, but because that’s what he’s gotta do.

Favorite Steve Moment? (you Can Do Top Five If Necessary)

5. “I can do this all day.” The way it reiterates, over and over, kills me. Because if there’s one thing Steve does, it’s endure. Even when he’s getting his ass kicked, even when he’s down and out, even when his heart is breaking, Steve gets back up and keeps fighting. He always keeps fighting.

image

Honorary mention #1: Steve’s ridiculously extra fighting style, featuing, THROWING A FUCKING MOTORCYCLE, dropkicking the shield with a 6 foot high horizontal plank, pirouetting for days, JUMPING FROM GREAT HEIGHTS WITH NO PARACHUTE, STEVE, and generally doing shit that would give Evel Knievel a heart attack. Steve is so reserved and serious so often, that the sheer absurd extra-ness of his fighting style is absolutely hilarious to me.

image

Honorary mention #2: The friggin’ flagpole scene. STEVE IS A SMART LIL’ COOKIE. He thinks outside the box, problem solves, and isn’t dependent on his strength. Steve might have brawn, but he didn’t always, and he got by for most of his life on his wits alone.

image

And now, Comics!Steve:

1. You Always Stand Up. This might be a Sarah Rogers line, but it’s Steve’s ethos through and through, and such a heartbreaking moment that tells us everything we need to know about how Steve became the man he is.

image

2. “No, you move.” It’s iconic for a reason. This speech gives me chills and always will. Steve is accused of being stubborn, and he is, but not without reason. Steve isn’t stubborn for petulance or ego; Steve digs in his heels and squares off when it’s the important things – like the soul of a nation – on the line.

Favorite Steve Moment? (you Can Do Top Five If Necessary)

3. Those pages from Loose Nuke. Specifically, the exchange Steve has, where he talks about how his own parents were immigrants. They are particularly relevant in today’s climate. Steve isn’t here for discrimination, and he isn’t here for warmongering. “Isn’t that why we became soldiers? To fight for a peaceful world?”

Favorite Steve Moment? (you Can Do Top Five If Necessary)

4. That time Steve found an entire family squatting in his apartment and was totally chill about it and not only didn’t call the cops – he let them stay and helped them out. (Please read this whole post! It’s magical.)

Favorite Steve Moment? (you Can Do Top Five If Necessary)

5. That time Steve punched Nationalism right the fuck out. I hate when people assume, because of the name and the colors, that Cap is some hyper-patriotic jingoistic blowhard. Because nothing could be further from who he actually is. Steve will put America’s people and ideals ahead of her government and iconography every time.

Favorite Steve Moment? (you Can Do Top Five If Necessary)

Honorary mention: The newest issue of the Waid & Samnee run, because this is my Cap and he’s back:

Favorite Steve Moment? (you Can Do Top Five If Necessary)

I know this went way beyond one favorite, but… I just REALLY LOVE STEVE, YOU GUYS.

THIS. Thank you.

How is steve =/= cap? I get it but i kinda dont get it.... Im sorry if this infuriates you but i think youre the best person to answer it...

In the MCU, Steve Rogers is a person; Captain America is a character.

In the MCU, Captain America was a character created to sell war-bonds. He was literally a product of war propaganda. Steve Rogers, the person playing Captain America, had no say in what the character said or did, so there is no way he can be portrayed as a reflection of Steve Roger’s opinions or desires. Steve was an actor playing a part and that part was defined by his employers

When Steve went to the European Theatre and started actually participating in the war, he was not playing a character. He kept the name of Captain America, but he was acting as himself. He still had little to no say in how his image was used by the media or the news reels of him filmed in Europe. After the ice, Steve had absolutely nothing except for a character he played in the 40s. At that point, Captain America had 70 some years of mythos piled onto him by literally everyone except Steve Rogers. And literally everyone expected Steve to be Captain America. He didn’t have a choice in the matter, he was awake for a week and was thrown back into active duty, not as Captain Rogers but Captain America. When Fury greeted him as ‘Cap’, that wasn’t a shortening of his title, that was shortening of his stage name.

In the MCU, Captain America has encompassed Steve Rogers to the point people don’t even see Steve Rogers anymore. I know that in the comics, its different, so I totally get the confusion, but no seriously. Steve =/= Cap. Steve can’t equal Cap, he has been given little to no chance to influence the character of Cap, and instead has been forcibly shoved into the role to the point where, in WS, he is fucking contorting himself trying to make his life work.

And it doesn’t because holy crap Steve is miserable

One of the things I love about Steve Rogers is that he goes against the archetype of good/optimistic characters only being – and deriving their goodness/optimism from being – innocent and naïve.

Steve isn’t naïve. Steve grew up in hardship. In the comics, he was abused and watched his mother be beaten by his father. In the movies, he had no father, but was violently bullied and dirt poor. Steve grew up in the school of hard knocks, in the middle of the Depression; any naïveté about how cruel the world could be got beaten out of him as a child.

And then, Steve signed up to go to war. He fought on the front lines of WWII, and witnessed untold violence. Some comics and cartoons show him helping to free concentration camps. And he fought – Steve never had the luxury, as Cap, of having a “no killing” rule like Superman. He’s never relished taking lives, but he’s done it when necessary. Steve is no unsullied innocent.

From all this hardship, all this violence, Steve could easily be a character who has a grim, cynical outlook on the world. He’s seen and experienced the absolute worst of humanity; he’s borne witness to genocide, after all, and horrors of war. And usually, the characters who have endured brutality are the ones who are the bitter anti-heroes, or dark and angsty heroes – the Batmans and Daredevils, the Wolverines and Punishers. Meanwhile the hopeful, optimistic heroes are often the ones who have had warm and loving homes, and who haven’t been broken yet by the world.

But Steve, despite everything, stays hopeful. Steve believes in the best of humanity, in spite of having seen it at its worst. Steve believes in the importance of Good, because he has looked deep into the heart of Evil.

Steve has suffered all his life, but he refuses to let the world break him.

That refusal, that strength of outlook and principle, and that subversion of archetype with a rejection of the increasingly popular grimdark hero narrative, are all reasons I love Captain America, and find Steve Rogers a truly interesting and inspiring hero.
