There is a lot of despair right now. I do not wish to add for it. A lot of things can be taken from me, but I will remain hopeful and silly and filled with love for the people I care about. They will not take away my joy

I'm going to preface this by saying: if you aren't ready to regulate after what just happened with the election, keep scrolling! You don't have to rush your horror at what happened and immediately get back up and at em if you truly aren't ready. But if you find yourself falling into doomerism and your emotions AREN'T temporary mourning (or you're ready to hear something other than doomerism), maybe this post is for you.

If you think this election means we're "past the point of no return", you haven't faced a lot of failure in your life, have you? You haven't read a lot of history about social movements and revolutions, have you?

Do you think we just started working for this election alone and now that it's over...the buzzer has sounded and the game's over? I know that's a minimizing comparison, but really, what other situation do you know of in real life where if the outcome you didn't want occurs, it's over, no coming back, can't fight against it?

Was there 'no coming back' for Germany after the Nazis took power? Was there 'no coming back' from the Trans-Atlantic slave trade? Did the oppressed and their allies just say 'well, we tried to make the slave trade illegal and it didn't work - how is everyone still working as abolitionists?? Do they not know how damning this is??' No. Well, probably some of them did, but the others - the ones who had been fighting before any sort of legislation was ever conceived, they took the hit but kept fighting.

Just because the fight is hard and you don't succeed every time you try something doesn't mean it's over. We just elected the first fucking trans woman to Congress! But because Trump won the presidency, that all of a sudden doesn't matter? You think you can just throw in the towel?

Grief and horror and dejection (yes, even plans to escape the country if you're part of the most affected groups) is 100% normal and good to feel. BUT never ever ever let that balance tilt to full-on doomerism that paralyzes you and makes you stop fighting forever. Take the time you need to process, but telling everyone that we're 'past the point of no return' is doing the work of the oppressors for them.

When I was getting my degree in criminal justice (criminology: law and society undergrad and full on CJ masters), I read enough history to understand that we're crawling up a mountain of shattered glass. Those before us bled to death crawling up that mountain so that their bodies could shield us and allow us to crawl up a bit farther before we start getting cut. Which allows us to crawl that much farther and lay down ours so those after us can be protected from the glass that cut us.

Is that inspiring to know that you're planting seeds in a garden you'll never get to see? Never knowing if those seeds will truly come to fruition despite the pain and horrors you faced? Nah, probably not. But the alternative? Giving up because you didn't get everything you wanted (and deserve as a baseline for being alive) in this one election - that doesn't mean it'll never happen. You know what's a guaranteed way to make sure it DOESN'T ever happen? Deciding we're past the point of no return and paralyzing yourself.

I'm not suggesting we wait till next election and try to get them then. I've been working outside elections a long time - everyone who ever made a difference in the cultural landscape worked outside elections. Maybe it's time you started, too.

You'll face a hell of a lot more failure than just one big blow every 4 years, but if you get back up after each failure and keep at it, you WILL make a difference.

This may seem silly but this is what I needed to hear in 2016, so I’m going to say it now. It’s okay to feel hopeless or angry or scared or betrayed or even just mildly nauseous. However you feel is the right reaction for you. You’re just not allowed to kill yourself. You are too good, too valuable, too important for this to be the thing that takes you. Yes the world is a mess, but taking one good person out of it isn’t going to make it any better.

So take care of yourself. Wrap yourself in that blanket. Get that hug. Eat that mug cake. Find your life preserver whatever it may be and keep going. You are stronger than you realize.

Deciding to do something when you’re feeling defeated is hard. If all you can take care of is you today, focus on doing that. Tomorrow or a week from now you can look at what your community needs to do to weather the storm in the long term. Yes communities are hurting now, but having to grieve one more person isn’t going to make anyone’s life any better. Please keep going. Please don’t let this election take you too.

So, what is the OGL and why are DnD creators thoroughly screwed?

Tumblr has not been doing a great job at talking about this, but:

With OneDnD, Wizards of the Coast has decided to update the Open Game License (OGL). Said license is what allowed people to create homebrew DnD content and sell it, and even larger companies to use certain sorts of content. Pathfinder, for example, is built on said OGL. This also allows streamers and artists to exist and benefit from said content.

With OneDnD (sometimes called “dnd 6e”), WOTC wants to create a much more restrictive OGL, which will, amongst other things:

Make WOTC take a cut for any DnD-related work (according to Kickstarter, a whole 25% of the benefits)

Let WOTC cancel any project related to DnD up to their discretion

Let WOTC take ANY content made based on their system, and re-sell it without crediting you, or giving you a single cent

And most importantly, revoke the old OGL, which will harm any company or game system that used it as a base, such as Pathfinder. And it means they GET ownership over any homebrew content you may have done for 5e in the past!

It’s important to note that OGLs are supposedly irrevocable. They were planning to use it for OneDnD initially, but they want to apply it retroactively to 5e, somehow. Which is illegal, but lawyers have mentioned there’s a chance they may get away with it given the wording.

This means that anything you make based on DnD (A homebrew item? A character drawing? Even music, according to them?), can get taken and used as they deem appropiate.

These news come from a leak of the OGL, which have been confirmed by multiple reputable sources (including Kickstarter, which has confirmed that WOTC already talked with them about this), and was planned to be released next week.

So, what can we do?

Speak against it. Share the word. Reblog this post. Let people know. Tumblr hasn’t been talking much about this matter, but it’s VERY important to let people know about what is WOTC bringing. 

Boycott them. Do not buy their products. Do not buy games with their IP. Do not watch their movie. CANCEL your DnD Beyond subscription. (Btw, they ARE planning to release more subscription services too!). They do not care about the community, but they care about the money. Make sure to speak through it. 

And maybe consider other TTRPG systems for the time being, Pathfinder’s Paizo has been much nicer to the community, their workers are unionized and are far more healthy overall

A small PSA to all those new to dealing with the porn bots that Tumblr now has a fresh wave of – I understand that when you go to report them, you want to report them as "[containing] sexually explicit material", but don't do that. Report them as spam instead.

These are spam bots flooding tags and the website in general with spam links. They often do not have anything sexually explicit on their blog (although they often have implicit material). Plus, these two reports get very different results. Reporting explicit material gets the bot slapped behind an 18+ wall, so minors can't check if they're a bot or not. Reporting spam gets the bot taken down.

Remember, folks: when dealing with a bot, report spam, not smut!
