bro i luv spider-punk but i specifically wanna talk about his hair
he. has. wicks!!!
the origin of wick dreadlocks is florida usa, and are named due to the resemblance to a "candle wick" because of how they stick straight up and/or out!
now, wicks have a bad reputation even within the loc community.
its already known that like if you got dreads, generally, ppl think u are unkempt, and dirty, and things of that nature, but there is even more discrimination against wicks its unreal. like legit yall i cant even begin to explain the nasty shit ppl say about them because i will be sad.
its kinda just considered the "crazy Florida man hairstyle". and a lot of the hate is due to the fact that wicks, appear "unkempt" or things of that nature
there has been a lot of texturism in the loc community which has brought with it the idea that dreads need to be retwisted to be "properly" taken care of, and need to be flat on your head and all these other things that often bring with it the need to hide your natural hair. i get unsolicited advice on my hair all the time telling me "i need a retwist" because of the belief that black hair needs to be all tidy and stuff to be respected.
but the thing is, dreads aren't meant to be all neat and tidy all the time y'know. its black hair in one of its most natural forms. and who better to showcase that than hobie brown, spider punk?
wicks kinda go against everything that dreads are "supposed" to be and "supposed" to look like.
i just love everything about this movie but i especially wanted to like talk about this hair choice. hair most def has meaning, especially black hair, so i think this was a really cool and fitting design choice for his character and everything he represents.
(i did my best to like articulate my thoughts but hopefully this makes at least a bit a sense)
Thereās a regular at the fabric superstore. Sheās at least 80 years old, and she just got back into sewing after giving it up for 40 years. Weāll call her Irma.
I love Irma.
Irma is constantly surprised by the newfangled sewing gadgets our store sells. Today she bought some extra-fine glass-head pins and a magnetic pincushion. As Iām ringing her purchases up, she tells me very seriously, ādid you know, if youāre careful, you can sew RIGHT OVER those pins? You donāt need to take them out!ā
I told her that I liked that you canāt accidentally melt the head of the glass pins with your iron, and she nodded. āThey used to all be like that, but times changed.ā
I love old sewing machines and asked what kind of machine she has, and she goes, āOh, itās an old Singer Featherweight that my husband bought me when we were first married. Itās probably not worth anything anymore, but the thing sews fine. Have you seen the ones those girls over thereāā indicating the sewing machine sub-store in my location āāhave? Those things go in every direction and the needle always comes to the top when you stop sewing! Imagine how handy that is!ā
I mention that I used to sew on my grandmotherās Featherweight but now thereās a intra-family war about who owns Grandmaās Featherweight and so no one gets to use it. Itās genuinely the best portable straight-stitch machine Iāve ever used.
I warn her to never let anyone tell her that Featherweight isnāt worth something. āI know, I miss my husband and itās always going to have a place in my heart, just like your grandmaās.ā
āI mean, Irma, thereās that, but theyāre also worth a really notable amount of money. The Singer Featherweight is really financially valuable. I almost never see them for sale around here for less than about $400, and thatās in bad condition.ā
āItās a good thing my husbandās dead, honey, because if you told him that he managed to buy a sewing machine thatās worth more in 2021 than he bought it for in 1950, well, heād be so smug that I just wouldnāt be able to tolerate driving home with him.ā
You should be allowed to leave work if you need to go home and think about the character
This man wants your knowledge.
Relistening to tma and Paranoid Jon is my favourite Jon. Heās spitting āSUpPLEMentalā into that mic, almost everything heās saying is on the wrong track, and heās presumably doing the dishes at some point, probably with the same level of twitchy intensity. Maybe I should draw that too?, idk
brb, running off to sea to seek my fortune! My crafts/art/miscellaneous hobbies are on my side blog, chlodobird-creations
