If Jason had been the one to fall into Tartarus. Jason Grace who started this series jumping into the Grand Canyon to save Piper.
Before he even knew he could fly.
It's his birthday and he's finally able to celebrate with people who care about him. And Jason stares down in horror and without a second thought.
He jumps.
He summons all his willpower. All his power and strength into this moment. He's Jason Grace, he's the son of Jupiter, child of Rome, he defeated Krios singlehandedly.
He can do this.
Because no ones going to die on his watch, not again. He promised to keep them all safe and he won't break that even if it costs him his life.
Percy's screaming at him to go back, to leave like he wouldn't do the same. Annabeth is struggling and even she's shaking his head.
The world can't afford to lose them. Jason can't afford to lose them. He reaches for their hands and flies up to the ship.
Struggling against the combined weight of Percy and Annabeth. All the while fighting the pull of Tartarus.
His head feels fuzzy and there's moments his vision darkens. His body aches as he pushes it further than it's ever been pushed.
Jason takes a breathe and keeps going. He doesn't let his own exhaustion show, he only focuses on getting his friends to safety.
Both of whom are silent. Neither wanting to break Jason's concentration. The gratitude and worry they feel only increasing every moment.
But they can't ask Jason to slow down, or take a break. Both already thinking of how they're going to make sure he rests after this. And give him the best birthday party they can.
Jason grits his teeth and keeps going. He stumbles at one point, going down for a few seconds. He shakes his head, getting himself steady and mumbles an apology.
He can't remember how long he's been flying. Every second feels agonising, he can't move his legs and his arms feel like dead weight wrapped around his friends.
And yet Jason keeps going.
There's blood though he's not too sure where it's coming from. The pain feels fuzzy but he's survived worse.
Frank, it's Frank who turns into some kind of bear to grab both Annabeth and Percy. Hazel's already grabbed the medical supplies and examining Annabeth's leg.
Jason breathes heavily like he's just ran a marathon. He's done it. They're safe. He's saved them. They're okay now. Frank's already reaching out to Jason who's fingers slip through his.
And Jason falls.
He has no strength left to stop his descent. He's too far for his friends to reach him. There's horror on their faces but Jason smiles with blood in his teeth.
Because their safe and that's all that matters. He gives into the exhaustion and blacks blacks out long before he hits the ground.
