She was abandoned by her family for her sin, and from that point forward her rage and her belief in the unfairness of her circumstance trapped not only her but all those who died on the grounds of Bly.

The fact that Peter Quint died taken by the lady in the lake and dragged Rebecca down with him and that every aspect of their relationship was based on possession.
