WOO, MORE OF THIS! This time, I added some of the Poppy Playtime characters too! This is a crossover with the Beatles Film Yellow Submarine(1968), one of my favs to watch as a kid.
Catnap-Paul McCartney(both are the most recognized, both are somewhat related to purple, and are absolutely astonishing to look at)
Bubba Bubbaphant-John Lennon(both are the smarts of their groups, both find ways through situations)
Craftycorn-Ringo Starr(both are the cutest and kindest of the whole bunch, botha re my favs, and I just love their voices)

Kay, it's my first time on here, and I'm also a old timey dude and I have obsessions with the smiling critters for some reason. That's why I made this! It's Smiling Critters x The Thief and the Cobbler! The casting is below.

Did Gaudani dogday and catnap start a proper loving relationship after all the chaos?
Short answer= yes.
Long answer= yes,But it will be its own chaos. I warn you that it will be a slow burn, mostly from a distance.
THE TYRANT AND THE GAUDANI AU-A BITE OF LORE= Catnap n' Dogday relationship.
This is the central point of the AU itself; and if you were expecting something romantic... well, you're wrong. Catnap and Dogday starts their relationship off on the wrong foot. And they had several stages before it became functional. So, here are the stages:
1. awkward first meeting
Catnap and a group of soldiers from the Empress's household of Crimson Noir invaded Astrawald's capital in a desperate attempt to regain status (I'll explain why in a future illustration), as it's a territory the Empire has always targeted. However, they were disastrously surprised when the Gaudanado civilians knew how to defend themselves to the point of causing trouble. Furthermore, the man who seemed to be in charge did something unthinkable for everyone: hurting the imperial prince, who is a fighting machine. The prince was able to remove his mask, and realizing he was extremely young and beautiful, something instinctive in him told him, "I want him for myself." In a macabre deal, he placed him face to face with his latest trick: a poppy gas bomb, the most dangerous weapon in the world. It was either go with him or he would blow up the entire capital.
2. Why isn't courtship working?
Once in the empire things for Dogday were completely uncomfortable: the emperor instead of stopping the madness despite initially believing that he was committing a "gypsy wedding" tries to cover up the whole act and start doing everything possible to make it someone "civilized" so that the empire would finally have access to the almost infinite resources of the empire (since the empire is going through a serious season of famine because the territories they have conquered left the arid land on purpose and the territory of Astrawald is known as a virgin and fertile land for any crop) exclaiming Dogday as the best trophy that his empire could ever obtain; returning to him his status as a legitimate prince.
Added to that, he has to endure the hostile environment of high society, the mistreatment of the wet nurse designated to reeducate him, who has no privacy because a few hours after being in his room they discovered that he was "a false man" and suffer for clothes and food. so after having to endure Catnap's courtship it's just a joke in bad taste.Catnap, for his part, begins to get frustrated because Dogday treats him with rejection; even more so because none of the advice he gives him works, he is even more frustrated when "the saintia", the most powerful authority figure outside the control of the emperor and the church, announces that she would be Dogday's godmother, voicher and guardian; someone who could help him not only delay the wedding date as long as possible but also contact Gaudanado allies to get out of there ASAP.
Even so, Catnap still had more power than him and tried his best to make him play his game… until…
3.equal conditions
Dogday was already lost regarding Catnap and everything that surrounded him= he's a prince; but everyone speaks in a pitiful way and that they will be surprised that the Emperor returned his influence of the crown, saying things like they would have to find a new imperial family and that this one would fall very soon… it was something that was rumored throughout high society, but he was not clear about one thing.
One night of a full moon, where he goes to complain about Catnap's abandonment of him at a party where he got into a fight, he discovers something interesting: the "sick" prince is actually cursed with a beastly form every full moon. And if it became known, it could undermine the image of the imperial family if it became public. The reason he was desperate to find something or someone to give himself power. With this information, for the first time, Dogday had an advantage over Catnap; he has power over Catnap. But even in his innocence and naivety, with this information, he decides to make a deal with the prince: annul the engagement (with the power he acquired through his kidnapping and engagement) and free them, in exchange for not making the information public and asking Bobby to treat his curse. And the slightest sign that the cat fails to comply with this agreement, he will immediately open his mouth, and Bobby has the right to stop the treatment.
Catnap was stunned; it was the most merciful thing anyone had ever done to him, and he didn't know how to react. There was no lying, no malice; his actions were clear, and even Dogday was helping him!
He learns more about Dogday while being cursed; he knows he was cultured because he knows manners and how to interact with foreign visitors (and not precisely because of the witch of a wet nurse assigned to re-educate him), but when he watches over him during full moons, he learns what a Dogday is like without the need for that facade of hostility he was forced to build. He felt that bestial side that wanted Dogday all to himself was growing, but at the same time, the rejection made it all the more devastating to know that Dogday didn't want to have that same interest; he forced himself to find any reason to reject him, even if they had interests in common. In a question, already frustrated, he asked him why he did this, and the answer Dogday gave him was "It doesn't matter that you are the sweetest man in the world, you threatened me, you kidnapped me, and you're using me for power… you can't ask a prey to see you as an equal if you, as a hunter, haven't put down your weapon."
4.It's just part of the deal...
A night, the karma hits him in the form of a legitimate Gaudani soldier who not only overwhelms him, but also defeats him and cuts off any chance he has of calling for reinforcements. When he realizes that this soldier is there to kill him… Dogday interrupts and recognizes the soldier, calling him "Big Bro" and intervening, telling him they'd only be in bigger trouble if they killed him. Things only got worse when he discovered that Dogday's older brother was actually Luke Meowluck (introducing himself as "the middle Gaudani Solaris Luke"), the third son of the royal family from which his mother came, and who was going to take over as Catnap due to his "illness" until he was on his way to Crimson Noir in a storm. That is, the person who was going to replace him, and who even wielded more power than he did now. He said without a shred of doubt that he wasn't interested in ruling the empire because he owed his life to Astrawald and being a complete person to his parents, the Gaudani, and his younger brother. If the prince didn't decide to free his little brother ans their friends, he would use the influence he had both within and without to force them to do so within two weeks, or they would have to choose between paying for the artificial power of his crown to fall, or worse.
There he realized that if Dogday only defended him, it was to minimize the reprisals that would fall on him and his friends. He didn't want his company; no matter how hard he tried, Dogday only showed genuine interest in him, ever since he learned of his curse and wanted to help him, hoping that once he was cured, he wouldn't need him. He felt angry when he realized that he wasn't allowed to claim anything from him. He created an environment where he could only react in this way and create meaningful bonds with everyone in the palace and beyond… except for him.
5. trying to fix the damage
In that time when time ran out, a desperate measure against Dogday was born = several explicit assassination attempts, both commanded by the emperor (because if he died and they could erase his traces he could blackmail the Elder Gaudani to ask them for whatever he wanted to repatriate his body) or with the church of prototypism (who already had their eye on him, because his mere presence and influence were already a big problem and they wanted to get rid of him). At first, it was attempted in a short period of time; but the situation and the injuries overwhelmed him and in all the attempts, Catnap intervened in several receiving the wounds to protect him; even on one occasion where one of the stewards turned out to be a murderer, he preferred to reveal his full moon appearance rather than have Dogday hurt. He truly regrets the huge gap of distrust he created on a whim and a thirst for power that involved them in something absolutely unrelated and wants to remedy the damage he caused to Dogday's trust in him from day 0.
Catnap makes an active effort to stop his father no matter what he would lose… and Luke certainly made good on his threat.
6. It's not just goodbye...
In an essay, the ambush that Catnap carried out on their capital was returned to them, led by the Elder Gaudani. The Middle Gaudani, his troops, and they surrounded the imperial palace. The emperor had no choice but to give in, dissolve the engagement, and pay the price for having attempted a gypsy wedding. Several past incidents involving the empire and the Gaudani were revealed, which they would also have to face; among them, the disappearance of Luke, which his country never assumed, the attack on his family, and a well-deserved treatment so that the prince would not die until he paid his debts. And the Elder Gaudani, influenced by his children, demanded that Catnap stand up and pay for the crimes he committed (incidentally, preventing the emperor from stripping Catnap of his power once he was out, which would be more beneficial to Catnap than to the emperor). Before they left, Catnap actually begged him to know why he helped him even with that. With a smile, Dogday tossed him a raven scroll and told him he was giving him a chance to meet the real Catnap, without the deals, traps, titles, plans, plots, and all the entanglements he created, but from a distance. This time, Dogday was the one setting the rules of the game, and he only gave one: be yourself.
It wasn't a goodbye… it was a "see you later."

The Imperial Prince Catnap put himself at a disadvantage if he wanted to court Dogday for several reasons (he passively threatened to leave with him or explode a poppy gas bomb, he's committing a crime called "gypsy wedding," he's holding him against his will, he knows he only brought it to regain some status,etc.), causing Dogday to act with complete rejection toward the Imperial Majesty; while he treats everyone else, regardless of their status or position, with genuine sympathy.
Therefore, it's very common for him to become jealous of everyone, especially the chief steward of the Empress's estate (Poe), the Hilmir of Nordjörd Simon "the Greedy" ... and even his best friend, the future Duke "LeCoq" Kickin. Except for the steward, no one feels a romantic interest in the young Gaudani.
There are also more nobles interested in taking Dogday just for the feeling of "wanting to tame the savage".... but Catnap made it very clear that no one can touch him.
And regarding Dogday, if he realizes it, he clearly doesn't, he simply considers it all a bad joke that his captor is playing on him to annoy him once he falls into his silly game, but Dogday doesn't plan on falling for it because he's not interested in participating in the first place.

A BIT OF LORE:HOW DOGDAY/1202 FEELS WITH...
Disclaimer: This list will not include Catnap, because he deserves his own lore section for describe this complicated relationship.
PICKY PIGGY: Picky or "Miss Piggy" as Dogday used to refer to her, was an experiment that was in charge of feeding the entire playcare; from home sweet home to the counselor's office. However because of Priya's "background"; The experimentation with Picky's mind ranged from forcing her memories to giving her terrible brainwashing; Therefore, the gluttonous personality of the character she embodied with the psychological discomfort of her person constantly fought. Bobby/#1186 was what Dogday could consider a "right-paw bear" and a great friend he could count on from start to finish (even before he recognized that she was his friend Minerva). Dogday, aware of Bobby's deaf-mute and that with his paws it was difficult for him to communicate with the children, she acted as a translator so that the children understood what Bobby wanted to say; and in turn, she let Bobby know how loved she was by the playcare children. Craftycorn:
Craft/#1194 started out having a distant character and only focusing on the only thing that kept him sane which was making crafts, and Dogday instead of breaking the wall of craftycorn followed his way of doing things to get closer (and describing it as " feeling a deyabu about it"); He was totally aware that not everyone interacts in the same way, so he started trying to make crafts even though they looked bad on him. Over time he became one of the most trusted friends the unicorn had, giving that love and respect through gifts given by him. Kenichi was the son of two system engineers, however they died "of unexplained causes" and he was relocated to the orphanage.

The first meeting between CatNap and DogDay was... unexpected to say the least.
WELCOME TO PLAYTOWN/POPPY PLAYTOWN- CHARACTER REFERENCE #1.
CATNAP NUITLUNE- DESIGN AND DATA.
Information data:
Name: Catnap NuitLune.
Age: 24
Height: 320 mts/10'4 fts.
Species: Smiling critter creature. Cat (Maine coon cat).
Occupation: private detective.
Genre: male (he, him).

Personality:
He is usually a reserved, quiet man, little bit sarcastic and to a certain extent withdrawn and in his world. His body begins to adapt to the poppy gas and has a "mild growth spurt"; The gas also goes from being just a sleeping pill to a tool to generate illusions in its favor and can generate the gas or poppy substance in a more solid way in its claws or fangs. His attitude also changes, becoming more sinic and playful; like a hunter who enjoys torturing his prey.
He can be reasoned with to a certain degree and if he realizes that he has hurt someone important to him he can revert to his activated form.
If he spends too much time in that way...he can get out of control.
Phase 3: uncontrolled/ unstable form.
It is what went wrong and made him consider a failure.
If he spends too much time in his controlled form the Poppy Smoke itself "takes over" Catnap's body, giving him the grotesque appearance of a skeletal cat surrounded by smoke; the only trace of his actual body being his eyes and mouth injected with poppy gas.
You can't reason with him...
You can't fight him...
You can only do two things = run away and pray that his energy runs out quickly so that he returns to his base form.
Medical notes:
-He is under strict medical treatment so that one day his curse cannot affect him.
-Even though he is stable, due to his physical modification, his body feels the need for the poppy substance; So as contradictory as it may sound, you are allowed to smoke a certain limited amount of cigarettes solely made from these flowers while investigating an alternative for his case; His trademark is "the hour of joy."
-Bobby is his designated therapist.

I'm working on the final designs of the smiling critters + their character lore + their curiosities for the AU; However...
POPPY PLAYTOWN (SMILING CRITTERS ICONS)
(Yeah, the name is awfull, but that's what there is-).
Well, I still reserve the lore and structure of the au, but in simple words it is a= no humans, no experiments, just the characters from which the toys are inspired in a world where the toys are THE living beings; and in an environment similar to a Ghibli film(including magic, technology and of course... WAR-).
With SC! icons there is not much to explain, of course; except for the review that Hoppy and Catnap had, more than anything because she was not satisfied with the first design.

(this Sketch are the first concept about Libby and Dogday + a little Bit of lore of them).

As mentioned above, she was an orphan who ended up in the playtime CO adoption program to be adopted by one of the employees at playcare, and was selected as to be one of the smiling critters, specifically; Dogday. (I don't think that the gender of the children is a great influence in deciding which children will be experiments for the bigger bodies initiative.)
She lost her parents because of a "strange religion" so the topic is something delicate for her.
Originally due to all the reasons, the team of scientists wanted to place it in "experimentation" as soon as possible (#1189-#1201); However, it started to be a problem when a certain Playtime manager had taken a liking to her and had her under some protection.
She was known for being a quite sociable and charismatic child among other orphans, however with adults she was a completely different thing being withdrawn and quiet.
She used to be constantly hurt and wearing Band-Aids (playTime co. trademark) due to her own childhood hyperactivity and was often an easy target for older children caused by the panic of not being adopted. (Libby in general did not usually betray them or return evil because she did not see the point of revenge).
Extra note: he reason for her appearance in the story (specifically her haircut and several of his clothes) is based on several protagonists of Ghibli films.
She favorite food was the po' boys sandwiches and chicken and waffles (which causes a misunderstanding when, already converted into dogday, he said "man, how much I would kill to eat a po' boy" and catnap left him the body of a deceased child).
Her favorites Playtime Co. toys are the smiling critters, Candy cat and PJ pug-a-pillar (although Libby was only able to buy 2 smiling critters at the toy store during his entire stay at playcare)
She hates the playtime Co. Doctor's, according to her because they were very rude and scary.
Libby "died" at the age of 9 due to an attack by the prototype.
About Dogday/#1202:
It should be noted that Libby's clear annoyance and confusion at being turned into dogday made it difficult for the playtime co. scientists deal with him.
The biggest problem in being turned into dogday in a curious way was not the fact that it was referred to as masculine; Instead, they put Dr. Sawyer's voice on the voice box.
extra note: dogday has no problem being referred to as a boy (he/him), however it was VERY confusing for him at first and many times he did not respond or had a hard time saying that; so he started referring to himself in the third person "dogday says..." or "dogday thinks...". He keeps his true identity a secret so that there is no confusion about what to call him (although he will be happy when he is treated femininely)
Returning to the topic of the voice box, this was a strategy of scientists who were aware of the fear and rejection that Dr. Harley Sawyer and that unlike Elliot Ludwing, he did not have a very charismatic personality or very kind to them in general. So, adding the fact that they had to turn Libby into an experiment, they thought that if Dogday had the same voice and interacted with the little ones in a friendly way, they could trick the children into confusing the smiling critter's voice with that of the scientist. (Dogday refused to collaborate; being the one who fears and rejects the doctor the most, so he learned to imitate the cartoon's voice as best as possible).
That made him create a sworn enmity with the scientists; constantly punishing him when the children did not see him, denying him food and when they gave him food it was portions of poor quality raw meat (which made Dogday prefer to endure hunger than eat it).
Not counting that enmity with the scientists, due to his duties in the counselor's office as an assistant and "therapy dog" for the children who came, he had a broader perspective that there were "angel employees" and "evil employees." even witnessing when one was upset about the whereabouts of one of the children he was going to adopt and hearing their complains about not being able to get out of there.
About... PLAYER?!:
(hell yeah... This story is more complicated...)
Remember when I mentioned that the reason Libby hadn't been experimented on before was because a high-up Playtime official had taken a liking to her? well, whoever she was the player is the person.
At first both were irrelevant to each other's lives (the player because he was just another worker, and Libby because of her shyness with adults); However, after an absurd incident with Barry's toy, it was enough for them to meet.
Once Libby had come into confidence with Player, she can't pronounce his name correctly, so she affectionately call to him as "Mr. Angel" and ran to hug him, give him drawings and crafts made in class whenever she could.
The scientists thought that perhaps it was a ruse to get the girl to believe in him, in any case they knew that he had already done more terrible things for the company... but they were shocked to know that he was taking the issue of Libby seriously as a legitimate adoption. even giving her gifts along the way (including the famous "tragedy dress").
Once Player entered the complex adoption process to be able to take Libby from Playcare, he learned the worst side of the scientists and managers of Playtime Co.; He spent two whole years fighting for it until he was able to find a legal loophole where either the girl would be handed over to him or he would publicly declare everything the company has done without caring that it would sink him in the process.
...unfortunately the day he was going to take her, she disappeared and only a bloody piece of the sunflower dress she was wearing that day appeared; and scientists left her for dead in an accident in the restricted area.
After Libby's disappearance and "dead", Player was never able to return to playcare so he demanded to be changed sections shortly before Dogday went into operation. They were never able to cross paths again.
a massacre and 10 years later; They cross paths again. Dogday cannot recognize his "Mr. Angel" and only called him that because it was the first time in a long time that he heard friendly footsteps; However, the mere fact that he referred to "Angel" and that player assumed that all the bigger bodies were children, it didn't take him long to realize that that poor ragged dog would be his sweet little Libby.
The shock of that possibility was so great that the mere idea made him remain paralyzed while the bigger dog said his monologue before he warned him to run away from there.
Extra note: in the timeline where he did react in time and saved Dogday from that cruel fate, he couldn't help but burst into tears and hug him, begging for forgiveness. while dogday would be confused.
About Theodore Grambel/Catnap/#1188:

Ohh boy... How I can start this?...
Their relationship was one-sized from minute 0.
Libby wanted to be friends with Theo however she wanted, because she considered him to be a very shy and quiet boy; Theodore, she tried to talk about him all the time with different topics until she could find a common topic.
Theodore for his way... he only considered her annoying and a waste of time to spend with his true friend, 1006.
Which got worse when Libby realized that, like her, he was a fan of the smilling critters show and that it bothered him that Catnap had disappeared from the shelves (she was even able to give him his catnap stuffed animal to keep him happy; which he still thinks is a nuisance but he appreciates the stuffed animal)
When Theodore disappeared, Libby got really sad; while Theo couldn't care less that it was Libby's... that is, until her resistance to her poppy gas became present and Catnap had to be more aware of her. (in the end it could be useful to his angel)
dogday also strived to be friendly with catnap and that it will integrate with the others.
That unilateral dynamic is cut when the theme of the "hour of joy" becomes present.
dogday understands everyone's motives in wanting to participate; but it starts to be a problem for catnap when your "and there's no other way?" along with their “and then what?” They made other toys start to doubt the prototype... that annoyance towards Dogday turned into legitimate hatred.
Extra note: In an alternative line where Theo likes Libby things would be slightly different, he would be rude because he doesn't know how to be sweet with her and he would even ask 1006 for advice on how to be romantic (of course it would end in failure).
Despite everything, for Dogday things would only end up being him alone, being the last smiling critter standing, completely a prisoner and feeling stupid for having wanted to be friends with that thing called catnap.
A DOGDAY HEADCANON=
While it is debated whether Dogday is a child or a former employee of PT CO.; I had the crazy idea of making Dogday's person a ghibli-type girl (but with a disastrous end).
Dogday was experiment #1202. Before she to be Dogday, he was a girl named Lilibeth Faith.
Lilibeth (can yo call her Libby) was just a little girl with bad luck, who fell into even worse luck who just wanted a home or at least spend every day well in playcare.
Libby and Catnap.
For Libby, catnap was a kind of Totoro for Satsuki and Mei. A giant creature that she saw in a friendly way. For Catnap, Libby was a nuisance. But he had to keep an eye on her due to the anomaly of initially being immune to red gas.
Of course, after becoming dogday and realizing that he was only studying her, he has some anger on him.(Dogday has done).
The dress of the tragedy.
The scientists at Playtime CO. Due to the initial abnormality of her resistance to poppy gas, she was seen as an undeniable candidate to be an experiment for the bigger bodies initiative. However, they had a problem: a certain high-ranking Playtime CO official. He had become attached to the girl, and had protected her from her to even legitimately adopt her. Because of Libby's critical condition, they had to turn her into an experiment in a hurry.The torn dress with dried blood is the only proof of her past that Dogday has left.
