Do you render in grayscale?

Sorta depends?? I know some artists will render the piece completely in grayscale then add color. But I like to do a rough value sketches, add colors, then continue rendering.

I don't always start off in black and white. I often jump straight into colors. I think for this piece though I wasn't really sure what colors to go with. So I quickly blocked it in grayscale to focus on the values

Apollo is one of four of his celestial sun people given a special gold crown that lends him enhanced abilities (i wasnt kidding in this tag - he legit is a magical girl LMAO).

All of them were tasked to protect their ruler. unfortunately they didnt anticipate their ruler being reincarnated into an angsty teen.

pollo is such a goober. he shouldnt be holding such a high position. but now he has a sun son who's his number 1 hater.

Really curious, but how do you do the coloring part in your artworks? It looks so juicy and nice. Especially interested in how you did it with the recent Enki sketch you made! (the one with blue, yellow, and many many more colors)

how do you think Enki and Nosramus treat the girl?

opinion on D'arce x Enki?

the girl and her strange wizard parents.... I think Nosramus would have an endearing curiosity towards the girl whereas Enki acts like he couldn't care less. But they would teach her how to do freaky magic stuff. And also maybe teach her how to read and write.

OKAY - I'm probably like one of three ppl who actually likes D'arcenki HAHA. I think it's funny. I think it's cute. No one ever talks about how D'arce and Enki are both ethically terrible, god-fearing losers just on opposite sides of the morality graph. They have that in common.

the lore really IS NOT that serious haha. Just based on the fact that I only own two games on Steam which are Webfishing and Fear & Hunger. So I make the joke that the reason my Webfishing character has a hook hand and is constantly smoking is because they went through the evil murder dungeon, saw the horrors, and retired to fish.

I cycle through a ton of brush variants in both Procreate and Sai. But I often use a chisel/square brush either with little pressure sensitivity - or lots of pressure sensitivity like a brush pen. That and brushes with a slight jitter or texture to them.

I actually have a Procreate brush pack on my ko-fi!

and thanks for letting me indulge in talking about these two!! here's how I see it:

I really like the idea that the ritual fight that was mentioned in Enki's intro wasn't the only time he had to face off against his sister. It was always like that for him and Ninmah. The priests that took them in saw their potential and wanted to know who the superior sibling was.

My headcanon is that not only was Enki physically weaker than her, but emotionally frail as well. That no matter what, he'd always be a close second to his "better" twin. Ninmah was exceptional and obedient. Enki was completely pathetic next to her.

I like to think when they were super young, they did care for each other. But under harsh, abusive conditions from the priests, it further drove a wedge between them. And Enki's frailty warped into his distinct bitterness as to no longer appear as weak - as to compete on the same level as Ninmah.

The ritual fight was an inevitability. A scheme to see who truly was strong enough to live. So when Ninmah spared Enki, it was sort of her way of communicating that she still cared about her brother. Even if they were pitted against one another, even if she seemed unfeeling and unbothered, she still loved him as much as a young (definitely traumatized) girl could in that situation.

So when Enki's given the choice to either accept her mercy or literally backstab her, both are completely plausible. Like yeah he also possibly still loves her. That's his sister and she was always there for him. But on the other hand, after years of cruel reprimanding, he finally had the perfect opportunity to prove his superiority.

Either way, it doesn't end happily at all. If Enki kills Ninmah and raises her as a ghoul, I'm going to assume she won't be completely herself. She's basically dead. The other route is also tragic. Enki accepts defeat and gets chucked into a well. And at the bottom, his resentment festers. Not only towards his whole diocese but also directed at Ninmah. Because if she did truly love him, why did she not rescue him? (In truth, she would've also been doubly punished, let's be real.)

Assuming they're both alive, I'm entirely convinced that they haven't spoken to each other in over a decade. Enki's probably got a LOT of indignation for his old order and, by extension, Ninmah. And Ninmah acknowledges that he's moved on. Maybe it's best they never see each other.

No wonder Enki is such a big hater. He was one of the few people born into this world with someone and yet he still ended up abandoned and alone. :,)

The way I paint is honestly a hodgepodge of methods. I’m in no way a professional painter or visual development artist - I work like this because it’s a nice change of pace from my usual stuff. But here’s a look into my process!

I work in glazes, then I build up to full opacity when I render. This way, whatever subject I’m painting melds with the background color. I prefer my pieces having low contrast and details. I save the most contrast and details for focal points and areas in direct light.

I’m also mindful of what direction my brush strokes are in as a way to sorta replicate traditional painting. It tends to do some heavy lifting in terms of indicating form. ((I love low effort things with big payoffs yippee!!))

It’s really noticeable in my last painting but I add these borders when the subject’s colors contrast too much with the background. By adding that transition border, it makes the subject feel less like a sticker and more incorporated into the background.

When painting portraits, my focal point will usually be the face and eyes. So I prioritize all the rendering and information into that area. Everything else outside that zone is kinda a mess of colors, shapes, and brushstrokes - but it’s ok because it’s not the priority. (Also the above pics are WIPS so if I finished them, it would be a bit more refined…)

Somethings I did in 2022 that kinda exemplifies my points. Although if I did these again, maybe I’d bump down the contrast and make it more focused??

Again, painting is not my main thing!! I just do it for fun and it’s meditative and when you're a storyboard artist, you miss colors…

I always strongly recommend studying contemporary and classical painters who have a stronger, articulated grasp on this matter. I’m just noodling around most of the times.
