I like to head canon that Max's parents weren't abusive, they just died when he was 3 and his aunt and uncle took him in. Max's aunt and uncle are extremely neglectful and never home. When they are home they're drunk and sometimes hit Max. This also ties in with Mr Hunnynuts was the last thing his parents gave him. Hence why Max still see's "dad" as a positive.

There's no way dadvid cannot be more canon that it already is. And the season 3 episode 12 only proves adds to it!
