new york is home for him, one of his homes at least. thereโ€™s a familiarity here that he couldnโ€™t quite achieve in LA in the same way, no matter how much the city changed. he likes fumbling with the shitty front door of his building that only unlocks with a learned combination of jiggling the knob and turning the key at the exact right moment, hearing the kids in the building stomping up and down the stairs (no elevator, obviously), spending half his evenings explaining how to order something off amazon for the millionth time to the silver haired granny next door who always stuffs his pockets with expensive italian chocolates and fills his hands with a deep dish of homemade lasagna.ย

but the same way sheโ€™ll say he stole the moon, heโ€™d tell her she must have soaked up all the sunโ€™s nourishment to share with him after weeks of all nighters when she finds him in a makeshift nest of canvas, a blanket some freshman had left him, and his pile of hoodies that just seemed to grow over time. it makes him miss wide skies and getting stuck in traffic for hours, the perfect opportunity to binge music to sing along to loudly or quiet talks while watching the sun glow in the horizon.ย

she feels like sun now and heโ€™s toddling after her on his skates, one awkward step at a time, hunched forward as if he expects to fall at anytime and then a pair of siblings pass him. then another kid, a girl with her red braided pigtails sticking out of her snowflake patterned beanie, flashing him an encouraging smile that makes him straighten up and realize, okay, maybe itโ€™s not so bad after all. โ€œi thiiiink iโ€™ve got it? how am i looking from there?โ€

ice skating isn't really something you do a lot of out in costa blanca. neither is it in LA, where she moves as she grows older and her own taste and distinction sharpen. then it's new york with new challenges, and all that cold, where she tries NEW THINGS with new people, all of them hungry and talented and craving that acknowledgement that this, all of this, was worthwhile...

she meets moon on a night where there is none. she tells him sometimes it's because he'd gone to steal it from the sky, and be there in that moment for her to meet him, that pointed expression dissolving easily into a careless laugh. it's what brings them into moments like this. as she tries to help him stand upright, even on the ice, so clumsy herself. "COME ON!" she's shouting across the cheery blend of christmas music playing out. "if i can do it, you can do it!"

โ€œlisten, listen, like, if you think about it. who wants to be on slippery ground with like a crowd of people whoโ€™ve got literal weapons attached to their feet?โ€ his hands are clumsily clutched onto hers, double gloved because his ice rink nightmare is toppling over and immediately having someone slice through his fingers with their skates. the thought of it now makes him shudder and he definitely does NOT let out an undignified yell as a child bumps into him from behind. โ€œholy shit, my heart is racing.โ€ย
