It's been a long time since I've seen the game but one of the things that never left me is how OFF never explicitly concludes the origins of the spectres.

Both the Judge and Japhet think the Queen made them. Enoch thinks they came from the dead. And Dedan doesn't even know what they are. One of the books in the library only goes so far as to speculate.

Since the canon will never give anything away and due to the ambiguous nature of the game, I'd like to throw in my own theory.

And it is that the spectres act like their world's errors. It was mentioned that Hugo created the main characters like the Queen and the Batter. After that, the Queen took over creating the rest of their world. It would make sense that in between all that expansion some mistakes would be made along the way. Like how the body might produce some abnormalities and deformed cellular components once in a while, the Queen would make a few missteps. The method of building their world was vague, so it could be possible that she couldn't correct some of them.

But because their world was already growing corrupt she couldn't assess the imperfections that were rapidly overtaking her kingdom or just wasn't aware it was happening. It was hinted many times in the game that she was already neglecting her duties both as a ruler and a mother. I could get the feeling she was not as resisting as much to what the Batter had planned. At least not as much as Dedan, who really believed that what the Batter was doing was deranged.

"There is nothing but the void after me."

"You don't even know his first name."

"You've been wrong since the beginning."

Her words sound like the words of someone who is trying to reason with and intends for reconsideration from the Batter. That what their world had now was better than the nothing he wants it to be. Maybe some guilt tripping for the Batter not being better than her.

The Queen says a lot of gibberish. And I can't begin to know how Mortis ghost really intended her character to be.

But it wouldn't be too farfetched to say that she might have alloted her time to her kingdom more than she did for Hugo. And would have likely known about the Spectres but was not able to reel them in. She was against the Batter destroying "beauty" and it would not make sense for her to create them to sabotage her own.

So maybe, the specters were just their own kind of mayhem.

headcanon: what if I gave this man a pistol

okay so I wanted hugo and varian to have different fighting styles despite sharing the same skill set as alchemists and I wanted their weapon of choice to also strongly reflect the kingdoms they came from.

for varian, he has his staff and throughout their quest he uses it often to illuminate the group's path, especially in darker places—which makes sense because he's from corona, the kingdom of light.

so for hugo, being from ingvarr aka the iron kingdom of warriors run by technological advancement and utilitarian system—I imagine him owning a pistol that he made himself that he specifically modified to accommodate alchemy wherein his ammos aren't bullets but rather alchemical compounds instead (think like Varian's project obsidian in season 3 but on a much smaller and portable scale) and he's made a built-in switching compartment so he'd have element variety of compounds as ammos ready to go. (think like Honey Lemon's chemistry purse)

it just made sense to me that he'd know how to make and use a firearm (frankly even his DnD counterpart knows how to use a riffle) considering his mentor Donella is a royal engineer and arm's dealer (at least basing this from Varian's Tangled Trials Lore by @i-found-you-justine-time) he's bound to pick up a thing or two from observing and watching her work—plus this provides a practical explanation to why he chooses to wear fingerless gloves instead of a full safety gloves like Varian—because he needs that extra mobility to pull the trigger faster.

and this also says a lot about his character because he made it solely and purely for self defense, designing his weapon with the intent to only immobilize opponents rather than actually inflicting serious harm to others.

Space aliens that look like cats?! I'm just smashing two special interests together for this.

I know, I k n o w that Ratchet is 5 something ft tall and so forth but, it looks better if i fudge the heights.

You know someone and I'm not naming names, but someone in a bomber jacket is getting punted at some point.

Random Bob's Burgers Shipping(?) Thought

Okay, I haven't seen every Bob's Burgers episode yet but I just have a thought I hope they address eventually in the show. Since Hugo was engaged to Linda at one point, he must have met her sister Gayle at least once during the engagement. I really want so badly to know how Hugo would react to a mess like Gayle. I don't really ship them per se because I know it would never, ever work out for multiple reasons but I want to see them too at least have a "history" together before Linda called off the engagement. Gayle being Gayle would think it was more than it actually was while Hugo would just want to bury it deep down that awful memory and they both agree to never speak of it again for completely different reasons. Gayle already tried to make moves on Bob before, so you're straight trippin' if you think Gayle wouldn't try to come on to Hugo before Linda's marriage with him. Maybe in her own messed up way she somehow knew Linda wouldn't be happy with Hugo and was doing her a favor in her mind. I don't know, I just really crave a Hugo and Gayle dynamic now because I know it would be chaos, doa, and I want to be present for that explosion. XD
