Your gateway to endless inspiration
It took the two men several months to fully recover and adjust to the fact that they no longer be reckless in their day-to-day lives.
Before it was just the two of them. Now they had a daughter they had to think about.
And their first step was to find a house for her to grow up in. A warm place to call home outside of the military base.
This home turned out to be a little cottage in a nearby town, just far enough that Kaaru could wake up and feel like a normal child with normal gay parents.
They tried public schools but they never were able to quite fit into the community, other parents calling their family an abomination against the Christian faith only to be shut down by Jesse, the cowboy having been raised on Christianity only to find it just as useless as NFTs.
Kaaru tried to have a normal life, a normal childhood. But something always seemed to happen. Something always seemed to come up.
A parent going in the hospital, hearing a voice that wasn’t there, talking to an imaginary friend in her own language until she learned english.
She concerned her parents, making them pull her from public school until she turned 11 and they were no longer qualified to homeschool her.
But her troubles never stopped. They had only just begun.

“She’s what?” Jesse blinks at Hanzo as he holds their daughter.
“She’s deaf. She can’t hear a thing.” Hanzo sighs and plays with a bit of Kaaru’s hair.
“How do you know?” Jesse asks, sitting up too quickly and hissing in pain.
“Jesse relax. Angela ran all the proper tests on her. Kaaru is completely healthy. But she can’t hear.” Hanzo says, Kaaru getting fussy in his arms.
“How can I relax when ya just dropped that bombshell on me.” Jesse frowns.
“How can you not accept she’s deaf when you obviously believe she’s our daughter.” Hanzo points out looking stern at him. “Why can’t you just accept the fact that she’s a little different.” He frowns.
Jesse takes a deep breath and nods, looking ashamed.
“Okay, whatcha wanna do? We got options and-”
“And what?” Hanzo asks, rocking Kaaru.
“And what do you wanna do? We gotta decide on somethin.” Jesse says.
“I know ASL. I plan to teach her.” Hanzo puts it bluntly.
“Okay, then I’ll learn too. Soon as ‘m outta bed I’ll look for a class.” Jesse says, surprising Hanzo.
He looks for any sort of distruth in Jesse’s eyes before nodding and kissing Kaaru’s head, making her giggle happily.
He then hands her to Jesse and relaxes as they start to doze back to sleep until Kaaru whines and reaches for the bottle.
Hanzo chuckles and hands Jesse the bottle so he can feed her.
“Sweet princess.” Jesse chuckles as Kaaru drinks from the bottle, one of her tiny hands on the bottle.
“I am surprised I didn’t hear her fuss while I was out yesterday.” Hanzo yawns and leans on his husband.
“Ya grabbed the wrong one Darlin. Me an’ Kaaru could hear ya talkin outta this one.” Jesse chuckles as Kaaru finishes her bottle quickly.
“That explains it.” Hanzo snickers softly as he begins to doze off, Kaaru not far behind him.
Jesse smiles at the two and sets the empty bottle aside, beginning to hum to help Kaaru drift off with her parents until the sun rises.
Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19 Part 20
Kaaru had fallen asleep as Jesse began to ramble off all the things that machine malfunction could have done to him and Hanzo, the vibrations of him constantly talking a lot like the crib base, but more comforting.
He rambled off theory after theory for a good two hours before he actually noticed that she was asleep, making him smile and hum to her softly instead of talk, the gentle vibrations making her snuggle up.
“Sweet thing. So tiny and vulnerable.” He smiles before putting his metal hand on her gently, making her whine from the sudden cold of the metal. “Oh, sorry princess. Fergot about the cold metal.” He chuckles, taking the hand away before putting a tiny blanket on the nightstand over her to keep her from getting cold as he holds her.
He yawns and starts to drift off a bit, a smile on his face.
Hanzo eventually comes back and chuckles at the sight of his husband and daughter cuddling. He lays next to them and smiles, watching them slowly breathe and take on their own calming aura that filled the room and pulled Hanzo into a relaxing sleep with them.
~~~~~~~
It isn’t until early the next morning that Hanzo and Jesse are rudely awakened by the shrill of Kaaru awake and in need of a diaper change and food.
“Oh shit.” Jesse groans as Kaaru writhes on his chest.
Hanzo takes her and sits himself up.
“Dumpling. Why are you crying?” He whines, trying to rock her back to sleep. “Are you hungry?” He asks uselessly as he gets up to try and find a bottle in the mini fridge they have in the room. “Why do we have so much fucking beer?” He groans as he searches more, Jesse sitting himself up in the bed.
Hanzo eventually finds the bottle and tries to feed Kaaru but she pushes it away. He sighs and puts the bottle on the nightstand before sitting down next to Jesse.
“Maybe she needs a change.” Jesse grunts, rubbing his eyes.
Hanzo lulls his head to look at him, leaning on him as he holds the fussy baby in his arms.
“That would make sense.” He eventually says and gets up to change her. She fusses the whole way to the changing table. But once she gets a clean diaper she calms and coos at him. “That better my little dumpling?” Hanzo asks as he goes to sit down on the bed.
“What’s her name?” Jesse asks as Hanzo leans back onto him.
“Kaaru-Seishin Mizuki Shimada-Mccree.” Hanzo nuzzles, tired.
“Damn long name doncha think?” Jesse asks softly, kissing his head.
“I had to give her some form of name to represent your side of the family.” Hanzo chuckles a little before sighing. “She’s deaf.”
Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18 Part 19
Once the room is roughly set up for a baby, Hanzo takes Kaaru and lays her in the crib, the little girl just smiling up at him. He reads the instructions and slowly turns on the vibrating base to the crib, putting Kaaru right to sleep.
Hanzo smiles and sits down to watch her before Genji tugs him.
“Come on. She’ll be asleep awhile and just in case, baby monitors.” Genji says, holding up two blue walkie-talkie looking devices.
Hanzo sighs and takes one before setting up the other and going with Genji out to the lobby to relax.
Kaaru stays asleep for a good while, the crib keeping her comfortable.
After a few hours, Jesse begins to wake up, grunting and tossing and turning in the bed.
His joints were sore and his body ached. It was like he had been laying there for a day and a half.
He sits up slow before yelping from terrible pain in his back. He pants hard and lays back down. He looks at the ceiling and feels his bandages.
“What happened?” He groans, his head spinning and throbbing.
He starts to hear Hanzo’s voice and looks to the baby monitor sitting on the bedside table.
He looks at it confused before forcing himself back up, propping himself up with the pillows before he sees the crib at the end of the bed.
“How long was I out?” He grunts, rubbing his head before Kaaru wakes and begins to cry, making him jump and cover his ears.
He struggles as he gets out of bed to see just what was making that terrible crying sound, only to find a tiny little baby in the crib. He reaches in and touches her softly, making her look at him and start to cry again. But happy tears. Kaaru starts to laugh and hugs his gigantic hand, tears still running down her tiny face.
He looks at her confused before picking her up and gently wiping her tears away. She makes grabby hands at his face and he lifts her up to his face.
“Where’d ya come from sweet princess?” He asks aloud, smiling softly at the tiny baby in his hands.
She smiles back at him and he chuckles softly before struggling his way back into bed. She holds onto his hand before he lays down with her on his chest.
Hanzo’s voice comes from the baby monitor once more and it makes Jesse chuckle.
“Han grabbed the wrong end.” He snickers softly as the little baby on his chest cuddles close. “I wonder where he got ya. Ain’t never known an orphanage ta allow someone ta adopt a baby fresh outta the womb. Maybe he’s got ya from someone who didn’t want their baby. Maybe ta surprise me. But ya look too new fer that. Ya can’t be more than two or three days old. Hospitals don’t let babies that young and this small leave the building. Where did ya come from?” He rambles, as she looks at him without a clue to what he’s saying, her big brown eyes mimicking Hanzo’s dark eyes but having enough warmth for Jesse to see the brown of his own.
He smiles softly at the baby and boops her.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say ya looked like me and Han,” He says before remembering the violent explosion. He blinks, coming to a realization. “Maybe ya are me and Han’s.” He says quietly to himself.
Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16 Part 17 Part 18
Angela brings Kaaru back to the kitchen, all the measurements done and accounted for.
“Here you go Hanzo. All done.” She says, handing Kaaru back to her eagerly awaiting parent who holds her close and safe.
Hanzo smiles at Kaaru as she nuzzles into him. She reaches up and plays with his beard, smiling at him as he holds her.
“Go get ready, Anija. Then I’ll drive you two to the store.” Genji says, doing the dishes.
Hanzo nods and takes his daughter back to his room, changing her onesie and his kimono into some casual clothing. She giggles and smiles at him. He smiles back and sits with her on the bed, letting her look at Jesse as he lays unconscious.
She waves her little arms at him and Hanzo chuckles.
“That’s your papa little one.” He smiles softly, letting her sit on Jesse’s chest.
She looks at him curiously and pats his chest, trying to wake up Jesse.
“No no sweetheart.” Hanzo says, taking her off him. “Papa won’t wake up.” He says, with a sigh, taking her to the lobby to meet up with Genji.
Kaaru is then subjected to the pinching and pulling of her cheeks from rude store clerks and old ladies trying to help Hanzo find the best things for his new baby, three women, all pregnant, yelling at one another who had the best baby food for a newborn.
Genji had to break them up and stop the fighting to keep Hanzo from mentally breaking about baby food.
“Come on bro. Let’s just go look at cribs.” Genji says, dragging his brother away from the three women.
Hanzo looks at the wide selection and tries to find the best thing for his daughter.
“What about this one? It vibrates to help babies go to sleep easier.” Genji says.
“I don’t know.” Hanzo sighs in defeat.
Genji hums and grabs the crib before looking at his brother.
“Take a deep breath. Then look at Kaaru. She is going to be your pride and joy. You’re going to be raising this woman-to-be in the next 18 years to come. Maybe even longer. She will look up to you. And she will love you regardless. Kaaru is your baby. I am not here to tell you how to raise her, but I am telling you how to make the best decisions on how to raise her. Think about the woman you want to see this baby become. Then decide which thing of baby food, or clothing, or diaper brand is best to help make that happen.” He says.
Hanzo smiles softly and nods.
“Thank you, Genji.” He says as they finish up their shopping trip.
Genji nods and takes them back to the base, helping Hanzo build the crib and set up what they can for Kaaru as she sits on the bed watching them.
Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part16 Part 17
In the morning Hanzo finds himself struggling to read the instructions on the box of formula mix, Kaaru on his hip as he squints at the tiny print in the mess hall kitchen. Genji is his saving grace as he groggily walks in and reads the instructions aloud to his brother.
“What are you even doing up this early?” Genji yawns, running his hand through his messy green hair.
“Kaaru-Seishin was fussy so I attempted to try and calm her to no avail so I’m just going down the list to see what’s wrong. Feeding her is next on the list.” He says a little too quietly for a sleep deprived insomniac.
“Kaaru-Seishin? Fire-spirit? You already named her?” Genji chuckles as his brother tries and fails to mix the formula without spilling the powder everywhere.
“Yes. I couldn’t sleep so I busied myself with finding her a name.” He says as he microwaves the bottle and adjusts his child.
“Isn’t Kaaru a boy's name?” Genji snickers.
“Yes it is but she is an odd one so I gave her an odd name to match.” He says as he tries to feed her.
Luckily for Hanzo she takes the bottle and stops fussing.
“Oh thank the dragon gods.” Hanzo sighs in relief as Genji starts to make them breakfast.
“Okay then papa, what’s first on the list of things you need to do now?” He smirks.
“Buy her a proper crib. And more diapers. And basically anything she could ever need.” Hanzo says, making his brother laugh.
“Gonna start her college fund today too?” Genji teases.
“That’s not a bad idea.” Hanzo thinks aloud.
Genji laughs at his brother, making them some waffles.
“I’ll help you pick up supplies for her, okay?” Genji chuckles and Hanzo nods, sitting at the table.
Hanzo lays the little baby on his chest as she drinks from the bottle and she nuzzles into him.
“Looks like she inherited Mccree’s love for your large pecs.” Genji teases, tickling his niece.
“I do not see that as a problem. As long as she is comfortable with me and not afraid of me.” Hanzo says tiredly.
“Why would she be afraid?” Genji asks as the baby giggles.
“Children tend to fear me whenever Jesse takes me out and we come across a few playing in the street. One may wave at Jesse but when they see me next to him they scurry away as if I might hurt them.” Hanzo sighs, playing with a bit of his daughter’s galaxy hair. “I always feared any children we may have adopted would fear me too.”
“Well, She doesn’t fear me. And I look like a cut-up raisin stuffed into the brave little toaster and spray-painted green.” Genji says, making his brother laugh.
“I suppose you’re right.” Hanzo sighs softly and looks at his little girl.
Kaaru cuddles into him and smiles up at him, making Hanzo smile.
“Such a sweetheart.” He smiles at her and rubs her cheek a little with his index. “So tiny.” He sighs as Genji serves him some waffles.
“How’s your toast of a husband?” Genji asks.
“He has yet to wake up.” Hanzo says as he holds his daughter close instead of eating.
Angela comes in and takes the baby from him.
“Go ahead and eat Hanzo. I want to get her measurements.” She says and Hanzo nods, reluctant to leave Kaaru.
Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15 Part 16
When Hanzo finishes with his shower he goes and sits with his brother to admire his small happy child rolling around in a basket full of soft pillows and blankets.
He brushes her cheek slightly and smiles at the little thing hugging his hand with all her life as if his hands weren’t covered in years of calluses and rough with age.
“Anija, she isn’t scared of my face.” Genji says as he watches his brother begin to get attached to his little mystery daughter.
“That is good.” Hanzo sniffs, becoming teary-eyed as his child nuzzles into his hand.
~~~~~~~
Meanwhile, in Winston’s lab, he’s cleaning up the wreckage of his freshest failure.
A faint whisper enters his ears as he suddenly notices a trash bin moving and making fussy noises.
When he removes some of the trash he finds another infant. A boy covered from head to toe in soot and grime.
Winston picks him up and looks him over, his brown hair looking black from all the dirt and gross covering him.
Another whisper flows into his ears and Winston looks around before hiding the child away in a test tube labeled “Jedediah”.
Just like the whispers had instructed as he goes back to cleaning up his mess, acting as if he hadn’t just stolen a child away from his family.
~~~~~~~
Hanzo sighs as he spends the night watching over his child, too afraid to sleep and wake up to her basket being empty and it all having been a dream.
And she stays up too, watching her parent watch her and the sky, cooing at the moon that shines through the window and the wispy clouds that look like fire when they cover the moon to take away some of the light.
Hanzo looks up at the sky and chuckles.
“It would seem only fitting to name you after the sky with your hair the way it is.” He says, picking her up and holding her in his arms softly.
He sighs a little, remembering she couldn’t hear him.
“Or perhaps I should name you after your flaws, as my mother did to me,” He starts but begins to think about it. “No, that would be no name for a sweet little girl. Not one as beautiful as you. Even with such fantastic hair. Perhaps, Aiko?” He says and she makes a silly face.
He chuckles and adjusts how he’s holding her.
“Perhaps not. Hmm. What about, Asami?” He says and she makes another silly face. “I see you have a wide array of expressions, little one. Perhaps you have your cowboy father’s fiery spirit too.” He lifts her up, making her giggle. “Actually, that may not be a bad name. Kaaru-Seishin. It’s not female but it matches your sweet little personality. And for a middle name, we must go with the theme of your impossible hair to match your impossible existence. Mizuki should do the trick.” He smiles at her and holds her close. “Kaaru-Seishin Mizuki Shimada-Mccree. Yes, that fits you nicely. And we’ll call you Kaaru for short, my little dumpling.” He smiles before laying her back down in the basket. “Time to rest my little dumpling. In the morning we will go get you a proper bed and some little toys for you to hold while you sleep.” He says, smiling before going to his own bed with the basket, his comatose husband still deep asleep and unresponsive.
“Soon my love, you will meet our little girl.” He sighs and lays close to his husband.
Part 12 Part 13 Part 14 Part 15
Angela sighs and sits down as Genji looks at his niece with a sigh.
“Should we go take her to her parents?” Genji asks as she starts to gum at her onesie buttons.
“Yeah. Hanzo should be awake by now.” She says, rubbing her eyes.
She gathers up the things she bought for the baby and follows Genji to Hanzo and Mccree’s room, playing with the little baby in Genji’s arms.
Genji unlocks the door after a soft knock and looks around, the room dark, cold, and the sound of running water constant. Angela turns up the thermostat and goes to check on Mccree while Genji goes to see if his brother is the one running the water to find him sitting on the edge of the tub rubbing his eyes as a hot shower runs. “Anija. Are you alright?” He asks and Hanzo looks up, not noticing the baby in Genji’s arms. “I am fine Genji. Just cold.” He says and Genji sighs. “Maybe if you put the plastic on you could actually warm up in that warm shower.” He says, helping his brother slowly stand. “Why do you have a baby?” He asks as Angela comes in with a plastic sleeve for Hanzo.
“I found her in Winston’s lab after the accident. She is yours and Mccree’s.” Angela says as the two of them help Hanzo get ready for his shower. “Excuse me?” Hanzo asks, looking like he just heard he won a million dollars.
“You have a daughter.” Genji says and Hanzo looks at the baby. “C-... can I hold her?” He asks and Genji nods, handing her over to his brother who holds the baby gently and looks into the galaxy of her hair.
Hanzo sniffs a little and smiles at her.
“Hello little one. I’m your Otōsan.” He sniffs and wipes away some tears. “She’s uh, she’s deaf.” Angela says and Hanzo feels his heart drop to his stomach. He kisses her forehead and hugs her before handing her back to them for while he showers.
Genji sighs as they wait for him.
“I feel so bad for him.” Angela sighs.
“He will persevere. He’s strong and I know he will have whatever support he may need from Mccree.” Genji says confidently.
Angela nods and looks at the little baby in her boyfriend’s arms.
“Let’s find a place to lay her down. Since they’ll need to buy a crib, a basket with some pillows and blankets should do for a temporary solution, right?” Genji asks as he starts to look around for an empty basket and spare sleeping things in a closet. “Uhm, yeah. For a temporary amount of time. Even if it’s considered child neglect I think as the resident doctor I can overlook it.” She says as she helps him make a basket nice and cozy for the baby before laying her down.
The baby smiles up at them, innocent and happy.
Part 12 Part 13 Part 14
After Genji had managed to clean up Hana’s mess he headed down to the medbay where he found Winston in almost as many tears as the baby he’s most definitely holding wrong.
“Oh lord. Okay, first of all, that’s not how you hold a baby.” He says, taking the screaming child from the struggling ape. “Second of all, you rock the baby, not shake it. Thirdly, this baby is a she, not an it.” He says, too busy ranting and demonstrating to notice the baby is completely silent.
The baby stares up at him with a curious face as he lectures Winston.
“Genji... Genji. Genji!” Winston says, stopping the rant. “She stopped.” He points out, pointing at the child.
Genji stops and looks at the curious child in his arms. The baby smiles at the green toaster of a man holding her. He sits down in one of the chairs with her and begins to tickle her, messing with her galaxy hair.
“If I didn’t know any better I’d say she looks like the cowboy.” He chuckles, snickering at his own joke. “But how did she get into the base?”
“I’m unsure. All I know is that Angela found her after my machine blew up. Again.”
Genji nods and starts to gently talk to the baby watching the glowing lights of his face mask. Meanwhile, Winston is tending to a headache that’s starting up.
When Angela returns she is slightly shocked to see her boyfriend talking to the mystery baby she found.
“Angela!” He smiles, looking up at her, the little girl in his arms reaching for his mask.
“Genji. I’m surprised to see you. I thought you were spending the day with Hana.” She laughs and puts the things she bought down to take the baby from him.
“I was until Winston called me because he couldn’t understand how to calm her. The baby.” He says as he gets up and takes his mask off.
“I see. Her blood work should be done soon so we can find out who her parents are.” Angela says, laying the baby down and starting to put a diaper on her.
“Then maybe we can find how she got into my lab.” Winston says, rubbing his head.
Angela nods and dresses the baby in a plain pink onesie.
“Genji, take her while I download the results of her blood work.” She says, handing the baby back to her boyfriend before sitting at her desk.
The baby looks at Genji and gives a big smile, touching the scars on his face. Genji starts to tear up.
“Angela. Angela, she’s not scared of me.” He cries, feeling very attached to her.
Angela smiles warmly and opens the results up. She reads through them and writes some notes before stopping, dropping her pencil.
Winston notices and stands up.
“What is it?” He asks, thinking she found some sort of disease.
“The baby is Agent Hanzo and Mccree’s.” She says softly in shock.
Part12
Mercy runs out of the laboratory, calling for backup as the laboratory goes into lockdown.
“Soldier! Reinhardt! I need backup immediately! The laboratory is locked down and-” She’s cut off by the loud explosion shaking the building, knocking her off her feet and knocking the wind out of her. She coughs as the comms starts to go haywire and people start running to help. Soldier runs over and helps her up. “Angela, what happened?” Reaper asks, wraithing next to them. “The machine Winston was testing blew up. Mccree and Hanzo were in there!” She coughs “Reinhardt, get that door open!” Soldier orders. “Yes sir!” He salutes and starts to force it open.
He busts it open and the smoke bellows out as they rush in to get everyone out. Angela helps them get everyone to the medbay and is the last one in the lab before she hears the soft cry of a baby. She looks around before finding it rocking back and forth covered in dirt and tears, her short hair a mess but an interesting galaxy.
“What in the world? How did a baby get in here?” She asks as she picks the baby up. “Oh dear, I need to get you cleaned up and checked.” She adds before rushing the baby to the medbay.
She has her hands full for a good few hours, diagnosing Mccree with a severe concussion and a broken back. Winston has a concussion but it’s minor and he wakes up an hour into being in the medbay. Hanzo is the healthiest of the three, only a broken leg to worry about. Angela set his leg and cast it before finally having a moment to look the baby over, starting with a gentle sponge bath and a blood draw, admiring the galaxy her hair is. The baby however, keeps crying. Winston gets up to help her but the baby just cries more from the giant gorilla holding her like she’s yesterday's rotten trash.
“I will go pick up formula and diapers for the child, watch her please.” Angela says, leaving the lost scientist with a screaming baby as Mccree and Hanzo are put back into their room by Zenyatta and Reaper.
The baby keeps screaming and crying until Winston finally calls up Genji.
“Yo!” He answers, playing a video game with Hana before his eardrums are all but blasted from the loud baby crying. “Genji, I need your help. Angela left me with a mystery baby in the medbay and it doesn’t seem to like me.” Winston grimaces. “What makes you think I’m a baby person?” He asks, pausing the game as he turns his sound down. “You spend every Saturday and Wednesday watching Hana.” Winston says plainly. “She’s very much an adult.” Genji says before Hana stuffs veggie straws up her nose for a silly picture. “Okay, point taken.” He huffs. “Will you help me?” Winston pleads. “Yeah, I’ll be down in a few minutes.” He sighs and then hangs up to see Hana taking another picture with the entire bag of veggie straws dumped out on her face.
~Last time~
“I wish all stories ended like that.” He huffs.
“That isn’t the end. Not yet kid. But, we’re close.” Kaaru chuckles.
~storytime~
The girl sat in Winston’s laboratory, working on her essay as she keeps an eye on him.
It’s been two weeks since he was tasked with making a machine to send the younger versions of her parents home. He’s been stalling all afternoon, asking her risque questions she ignores and trying to get a gage on why he’s doing this. It’s like she doesn’t care for his ideas or his sciences, dismissing them with a scoff.
He eventually gives up on asking her questions and focuses on the machine.
“Don’t put that there.” She says nonchalantly as he reaches to screw a bolt in.
“So she speaks. Why shouldn’t I put it here, agent K-M-S-M?” He says, looking at her.
“It’ll blow up in your face later if you do.” She says, chewing the eraser of her pencil.
He rolls his eyes and puts it in anyway, finishing the machine.
“There, it’s done. Now all we need to do is test it. Any suggestions?” He asks the girl who’s staring down her notepad full of scribbles.
“Try this.” She tosses a hair tie to him.
“I will assume you want this back.” He says, putting it onto one of the pads hooked up to the machine and turns it on.
The hair tie disappears and then reappears on top of the girl’s head a few moments later.
“It works!” He smiles triumphantly.
“Great! Now go get the people.” She says with fake enthusiasm.
“But I will need to have the present versions present. As well as Dr. Zeigler if anything goes wrong.” He says, trying to get her to have more of a conversation with him.
“Then hop to it, Casanova.” She says, scratching something out on her notepad before flipping a few papers to look through it more.
He sighs and does as she tells him, gathering the people who need to be present in the lab for the big event.
Meanwhile the girl says goodbye to her parents and sends them home, sending her dog Toby with them. When she gets back to the lab the present Hanzo is leaning against his Mccree, looking sick and miserable.
“Is everything alright?” She asks them and Mccree just nods.
“Just a little hangover.” He says and she nods, helping them into position with the younger versions.
Winston starts everything up and the pads beneath their feet glow a light blue. Electricity starts to flow through them, their hearts starting to race as they’re stuck in their place. Winston begins to put in the time they need to be sent home, loading the machine up to its maximum capacity, that last bolt he put it rattling and heating up.
The girl watches, making sure not to miss a thing.
The bolt rattles louder and louder, turning red hot before shooting out of its socket, electricity sparking and covering everything, making the men standing on the pads scream in pain.
Winston jumps, frantically trying to turn the machine off but gets shocked as his machine is engulfed in bright blue electricity. He backs away, staring in shock as the machine begins to break apart. The younger versions of Mccree and Hanzo disappear into the electricity, their pained screams fading with them. Mccree is then thrown off his pad into the wall and Hanzo falls into a crumpled ball of pain as the machine explodes.
Winston is thrown back and knocked unconscious. Mercy runs out, calling for backup as the laboratory goes into lock down.
The girl watches, from the corner, panicking as she’s frozen in terror as the fire rages. It slowly calms and from the flames a baby rocks back and forth in the rubble, crying loudly. The girl looks at it and tries to go to it but the laboratory door creaks open forcefully. She gasps and panics, making a portal shakily and jumps through, not making sure she was going to the right place and time.
Kaaru gets up, grunting in pain as her panicked portal closes. She looks around and nothing looks right for the time she was aiming for.
“Son of a bitch.” She huffs and gets up.
She looks around and pulls off her sling, her cast having burnt up in the portal. She dusts herself off and puts her hood up, walking out of the alley she landed in.
After a few minutes she passes another alley and hears crying. She looks down the alley and sees a shiffy man threatening a kid with a switchblade.
“I can’t get a break, can I?” She huffs and runs in, pulling the man off the kid.
~reality~
“Wait wait wait wait. That’s how we met. That was a week and a half ago.” Jesse says
Kaaru chuckles and nods as they stop on the doorstep of Sunshine Acres Children’s Home.
“When you’re my age, 24 hours ago is a long time ago.” She says, leaning down to look him in the eye.
“Wait, why are we here?” He asks, looking at the orphanage. “I have to go home. I have to go to my time. And I can’t take you with me.” She sighs.
“Why not? Why can’t I go with you?” He starts to cry.
“You belong here. In this time. I’m sorry Jesse.” She says, kneeling down. “We’ll meet again, I promise.” She adds and he hugs her tight.
She sighs and hugs back. When he pulls away from the hug he goes to take off the serape but she stops him. “Keep it.” She smiles.
“Really?” He sniffs and Kaaru nods.
“And how’s this, you take up that Mccree name. You’re strong, firm, and brave. You deserve the name Mccree.” She smiles.
“I, Jesse, will do you proud. Promise.” He salutes.
“Now, this orphanage needs you. And you need it. Head on in. Okay? Tell them your mother left you here.” She says and he sighs, nodding.
He heads up the stairs and sees the doors. He stops at the top and looks behind him, his mouth open to say something to Kaaru, but she’s gone and with her, his memories of her and her story, his mind shifting to feel very sad as he imagines a mother he never knew dropping him off here and driving off. He sulks into the orphanage, all he has is his clothes on his back, and his name, Jesse Mccree.
~Last Time~
“She threw herself off the roof? Why?” Jesse asks.
“She was reminded of something bad in the past. But she’ll be alright.” Kaaru smiles as they continue their journey.
~story time~
The girl sat alone, feeling horrible as her dog leaned on her.
He whined softly and pat him softly, staring at the empty container of ice cream on the table in front of her. Toby licks the sticky melted ice cream off her hand as she pats his head, hopping onto the table to lick it off her cheeks as well. He even licks at the cast of her broken arm, making her smile softly before a large warm hand is set down on her shoulder.
She looks up in surprise to see the version of Mccree she grew up with smiling at her.
“Was that ice cream any good at what it’s job?” He asks, sitting down next to her.
“no.” She mumbles, making him smile.
“Ya want some of your favorite feel better cookies?” He asks, putting Toby in his lap.
“The banana nut chocolate ones?” She asks, a little hopeful.
He nods and smiles.
“Let’s get bakin.” He says and stands up, going into the kitchen.
The girl follows sluggishly and sits on the counter like a toddler as she watches her dad bake her favorite cookies, Toby in her lap as she feels tired from straining herself.
“What happened ta yer arm?” He asks her as he bakes, not letting any sort of tone enter his voice.
“What happened to your face?” She retorts jokingly. “Ya used to be every fangirl’s living wet dream. Now ya look like everyone gay grandpa.” She adds, making him laugh.
“Well, accordin ta your Otōsan, this gay grandpa looks as good as any other time in mah life.” He says proudly.
“Then according to my depressing existence I fell and broke my arm before it was done healing from the first break.” She says and he looks at her.
“Who said ya were depressin?” He asks and she waves it away. “Kaaru, what happened? Ya know you can talk to me.”
She mumbles and he steps closer.
“Kid, I can’t hear ya when ya mumble.” He says, trying to be gentle.
“No one said I was depressing. I said I was and then tried to jump off a building.” She sighs.
“Ya aren’t no one sweetheart. You’re my little girl. Ya kick names and take ass. You’re my legacy.” He says, sitting on the counter next to her.
She sighs and leans on his shoulder until the cookies are done.
“I’m so tired Papa.” She sniffs as he puts the cookies on the cooling rack.
“Then once these are cooled, we’ll go and rest. How’s that sound?” He says and she nods.
“Wait, we can’t go to my room, Otōsan is there.” She says, making him laugh.
“We’ll use one of the spare rooms by the offices.” He says and she nods.
They get to an empty room and snack on cookies late into the night.
~reality~
“Aww, that’s sweet.” Jesse says, making Kaaru laugh.
“Yeah, it was. It’s my favorite part personally.” She says
“I wish all stories ended like that.” He huffs.
“That isn’t the end. Not yet kid. But, we’re close.” Kaaru chuckles.
Sibling Bounce
I made this from a gif I found a while back. No clue where.
I call it the sibling bounce cause the original was Hanzo and Genji.
So this is Kaaru and her twin brother Jedediah when they're 35.
Day 15-19!
Kaaru on watch duty listening to music as she gets ready for the day with her dragons messing with her.
Day 2 of this year's artsy October!
Today's prompt was Wisp so I drew Kaaru with wisps of her hair sticking up after a nap at her homework desk.
Day one of artsy october folks!
Kaaru watched the sky turn from night to day and awaited for Jesse to wake up. She was always a night owl. Even as a baby she would lay awake all night, not making a sound as she watched the night that fascinated her.
“Ms. Mcada?” Jesse asks, waking up.
“Hmm? Yeah kid?” She asks, rubbing her eyes.
“You okay? You’ve been staring out that window for a few hours now.” He says, getting up.
“Yeah I’m-... I’m fine.” She says, not really okay at all.
Jesse nods and gets up and dressed.
“Where to today?” He asks
“Next we’re going to make our way to Phoenix. We’re in Sierra Vista. That’s roughly 206 miles. It’ll take about 3 days.” She yawns.
“Cool!” He says, easily impressed.
She chuckles and they get ready to leave.
~storytime~
The next morning the girl walked with the young versions of Mccree and Hanzo, talking about what happened from when they last saw her. She enjoyed the walk until they were called to the lab of a brilliant scientist by the name of Winston, who the girl had a grudge against.
Winston had begun a long and brutal process of finding a way to get the younger versions back to their time. The girl disapproved of the gorilla but didn’t have any better ideas so she kept her mouth shut.
“It will take a few days but I will get the machine up and running.” Winston says as the girl sulks in the corner.
“That should work, right kiddo?” Mccree asks the girl, his younger counterpart piecing together they’ll be stuck there a few more days.
“That machine better work. I don’t want to be covered from head to toe in bruises trying to send them back. It’s hard enough getting me and Toby around and he’s a dog. So get it right Peanut breath.” She scowls at Winston.
Winston gulps and nods, getting to work.
The girl disappears for the rest of the day, leaving the Hanzos and Mccrees to their own devices, Soldier 76 having cancelled Mccree’s next mission.
It isn’t until late the next morning that they find her in the infirmary, her arm getting recast.
“What’d you do kid?” Mccree asks as she gets up to leave.
“Threw myself off the building.” She says before leaving.
“That wasn’t very funny.” Mccree says.
“She wasn’t joking.” Angela shakes her head.
“Shit. What’d she do that for?” He asks and she shrugs.
The girl went to the mess hall, her dog Toby waddling behind her as she shovels ice cream into her mouth.
~reality~
“She threw herself off the roof? Why?” Jesse asks.
“She was reminded of something bad in the past. But she’ll be alright.” Kaaru smiles as they continue their journey.
~This is late and not formatted how I’d like but it’s here. I’m having technical difficulties with my phone and it’s pissing me off. However I will just continue writing on my PC for the time being.
Apologies. I hope this short blurb is enough for now.~
As the night grows later and the sky changes color to an early morning color, Kaaru and Jesse come to the edge of the desert they’ve been traveling for days. Buildings growing nearer as they make it to the edge of the town.
“Mcada, what happened next?” Jesse asks as they dust off and head towards the motel.
“Hmm? In the story?” She asks and he nods. “Well-”
~storytime~
Zenyatta stared at the couple with a face that could only be guessed as in shock, Mccree having a determined face as he held Hanzo’s hand.
“You want me to- what?” Zenyatta asks, rubbing the bridge of his non-existent nose.
“Marry us. You’ve done it before for Reaper and Soldier.” Mccree says.
“No, I helped them renew their vows. Very different.” Zenyatta corrects the cowboy.
“Can you or can’t you marry us?” Hanzo rolls his eyes.
“I can but you need at least one witness to have it be official. Preferably a family member or close friend.” Zenyatta sighs.
“No problem. Genji is waiting in the mess hall with Reaper and Soldier.” Mccree says and Zenyatta nods.
“Lead the way.” He says, acting exhausted.
The ceremony, while short and small, was probably the most magical thing the girl had ever spied on from the vents of the base, remembering the video her Oiijia showed her when she was little of her parent’s wedding. She never imagined one of her missions would allow her to actually watch it. Even if she had to put it in an essay.
She sneaks away and back to her room where her Otōsan is looking through her holo-photo album.
“Any good memories to tell a story about?” She asks and he smiles.
“There are so many and yet so few left to tell you about.” He says and she giggles.
“What about today?” She asks and he looks at her.
“Today?” He asks, not catching on.
“Your wedding day.” She nods laying her head in his lap.
He chuckles softly, starting to braid her hair.
“But I have told you that story before. Wouldn’t you like a new story, my cherry blossom?” He asks as she looks up at him.
“No. It’s my favorite story you and Papa have told me.” She says, her galaxy hair shifting slightly as it’s braided.
“Well, it was early in the morning on a Thursday, I remember it well for the chilly breeze outside on my morning walk. It was the second to last day of December and Mccree had been talking about our wedding for months. He imagined a big wedding with lots of people and food. But we decided to get married right then and there. We had some problems in the beginning of our relationship so we were off and on a lot. We-” He began but his daughter was impatient.
“Skip to the good part.” She giggles, sitting up.
“Okay cherry blossom.” He chuckles before pulling her into his lap. “My brother and your grandparents were there, taking pictures and Genji was recording as your Papa and I exchanged vows and promised ourselves to each other. Zenyatta, being a monk, forged our marriage bonds and pronounced us man and husband.” He says as he pets her hair.
She smiled gently, remembering the scene from the vents.
“I love that story. It’s happy.” She says and he nods.
“And it’s even better when we get you, my sweet cherry blossom.” He smiles.
~reality~
Jesse hums as Karru opens up the motel room they got.
“So, she got to see her parent’s wedding?” He asks and Karru nods.
“It was a good day for her.” She says before making Jesse go to bed for the night. “More tomorrow okay?” She says and he nods.
“Night Ms. Mcada.” He spoke softly before passing out.
“Night Pa.” She whispers to herself as she looks out the window into the starry night that her hair swirled to match the stars she was seeing.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6 Part 7
Kaaru woke up at the buttcrack of dusk to Jesse poking her as he held a canteen out to her.
“W-Wha are ya doin up? We still got ah hour before night.” She groans, sitting up.
“Might as well get up now and get ready to move.” He shrugs.
She sighs and nods, getting up and taking a drink of water.
“So what happens next in the story?” He asks and she chuckles.
“Okay. You hear the last bit I said?” She asks and he nods. “Alrighty, let’s see…”
~storytime~
The girl hugs young Hanzo before having to push him off.
“Okay, a girl needs to breathe.” She chuckles lightly.
“Not when that disgusting riffraff is near. We must go now, my future child.” He says and presents Hanzo groans as young Mccree looks devastated.
“I’m his future kid too. And it ain’t like ya can just up and leave a hospital bed.” She says.
“What did you put in my drink you disgusting cowboy?!” Young Hanzo barks at young Mccree.
“Nothin’! I swear!” He cowers as the girl gets between them.
“Boys! I will personally castrate both of you if you don’t calm down.” She barks at them and they both cower away.
She sighs and rubs her temples.
“How did I end up babysitting?” She asks as the young and present versions of her parents start to talk, figuring out when and where the younger ones are from.
The sound of a guitar playing draws her attention to a supply closet.
She goes over slowly, a golden glow coming from under the door. She opens it slowly and pokes her head in, curious who was in there.
Inside was a man with long white hair tuning a guitar with two little glowing dragons and a small light bulb.
She gasps and hugs him tightly.
“Otōsan! What are you doing here?!” She says, smiling widely at the Hanzo she grew up with.
“Kaaru, my child.” He smiles and hugs her back. “I know I am not supposed to be here but I wanted to check up on how your mission was going.” He says, leaving the closet with a smile.
“Are you sure it’s not because you and Pa grounded me?” She asks as she’s leading him out.
“Yes my child. Quite positive it is not that.” He laughs as they leave.
Present Hanzo and Mccree soon found their past selves too annoying and cringey to handle so they went to their room and laid down, mentally exhausted already and it wasn’t even 8 am.
“Han, I’ve been thinkin.” Mccree says as he holds his tired archer in his arms.
“That’s dangerous.” Hanzo snickers, looking up at him attentively.
“And here I was, about ta say we should get Zenyatta ta marry us taday.” Mccree says with a pout.
“I wasn’t being serious, my silly cowboy.” Hanzo chuckles, pecking Mccree’s lips. “Though, I am not opposed to the idea of getting married today. But, should we?” He asks and Mccree looks at him.
“I say yes. I want ya ta be my husband taday. Predetermined future or not. I’ve been fightin ya on it for years. I want it to finally happen.” He says and Hanzo smiles.
“Alright Cowboy, we’ll get married today.” Hanzo says, kissing him softly.
~reality~
“That was mushy.” Jesse laughs and Kaaru nods.
“That my parents are.” She says, looking off into the distance.
“What?” Jesse asks.
“What?” Kaaru asks, covering her tracks.
Jesse shrugs it off and Kaaru smiles as they walk the night desert.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6
Kaaru pants as she stops at a tree, the sun starting to rise.
“Ya had ta choose the largest hill.” She says as Jesse plops down beside her.
She sits down and sighs, Jesse curled up in the serape to hide from the rising sun.
“Yeah yeah. I’m tired.” He groans.
She huffs and lays down, tired too.
“Ya want more story?” She asks and he nods with a little groan.
~storytime~
Hanzo hums as he thinks of questions that may be able to be asked of the girl without screwing with the timeline.
“Which language were you brought up in? Japanese or English?” Mccree asks and she looks away.
“Neither actually. My first language is ASL.” She says as Toby licks her cheek.
“What? Why?” Hanzo asks, confused why they would do that and not teach her to speak their languages.
“Y-You’ll find out once I’m born.” She says and they nod. “Any other questions?”
“How old are you?” Hanzo asks.
“Almost 16. I think. Time is a little funny for me.” She says as Toby hops down and tugs her pant leg of her pajamas. “And it’s my bedtime. Good night you two. I’ll see you and your younger doubles from 15 ish years ago in the morning.” She says, waving to the highly confused men as Toby waddles behind her.
They go to bed, curious what she meant by younger doubles and come morning people are running around freaking out.
Except for the girl. She looks absolutely calm and collected, like she expected it to happen.
“Hey kid, what’s goin on?” Mccree asks, yawning as he puts on his prosthetic arm for the day, having taken it off so he wouldn’t get Hanzo cold.
“New arrivals. 22 year old Jesse Mccree and 23 year old Hanzo Shimada. They’re both passed out from the sudden time jump in the infirmary.” She shrugs.
“What are ya talkin about? I’m 37 and very much awake.” He says and she laughs.
“Sorry no but they’re your younger self, being brought here by the major time table event that’s going to happen. It’s a fixed point in time and enable for it to work 2 versions of the people that will be majorly affected within the past and future 20 years will come and be put through an experiment they won’t remember to create the thing that will change the course of their present versions lives forever.” She says and Hanzo frowns at her, wearing a white kimono coincidently.
“So you’re saying you brought them here.” He says and she nods.
“Pretty much. Let’s go see em! I’ve only visited the past twice and both times you two acted like total cheese balls.” She smiles before making a mad dash to the infirmary.
“Total… cheese balls?” Hanzo asks, assuming it’s something that Mccree would say.
“Don’t look at me like that Han.” Mccree frowns as they follow the girl to the infirmary.
“Like what?” Genji asks, butting into the conversation as he starts to walk with them.
“Like I’m you.” Mccree says and walks faster as the doors to the infirmary are opened by the girl.
“Agent Mcada recognized. Access granted.” Athena chimes and Mccree and Genji stop dead in their tracks.
“What’s wrong?” Hanzo questions.
“Agent Mcada was a friend of ours in BlackWatch. But she died during a raid.” Mccree shakes his head.
“Incorrect my fine gentlemen! Now hurry yer butts up!” She says, poking her head out of the door.
The three men go in, only to find a 23 year old man, who looks identical to how Hanzo did, yelling at a 22 year old man, who is identical to how Mccree did, in japanese, using foul language and hitting the younger with a hospital pillow.
The girl interjects and the young Mccree hugs her.
“Mcada! How’s my time travelin future daughter doin?” He smiles widely.
“Oh ya know, just a little older and a whole lot more grounded.” She smiles before the young Hanzo yanks her away from Mccree.
~reality~
Kaaru laughs a bit at her story before realising Jesse is already asleep. She smiles and turns over and dozes off herself with one final goodnight to the boy.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5
Come nightfall in the desert, Kaaru is loading her gun as she smokes a cigarette, a serape draped around her shoulders that she bought, the pattern and color much like her father's except brand new and untorn. Jesse snores next to her, still fast asleep.
She's ready to kick him.
"Jesse, get your ass up." She says, flicking his nose.
He groans and turns over.
"I said, get up." She says, rolling him into the still hot sand.
He jumps up and pouts at her, rubbing the hot sand off his singed arm and face.
"We gotta move." She says, getting up and flicking her cigarette into the sand, starting to collect her bags.
“What for? The sand is still hot and when the sand’s hot, the snakes are out.” He says, shivering at the thought of the animal.
She thinks for a minute, looking over the desert.
“My father once taught me somethin about that. He and I had awful fears of snakes when I was little so when he took me on a campin trip out inta the desert, he showed me a snake nest. At nightfall, they all were borrowin inta the sand to keep warm. No snakes bothered us at dusk or all night.” She says. “And they won’t here neither. Them snakes are borrowin in for the night. And if we do happen upon one, I’ll shoot it before you can say “tickle me silly till i’m blue in the face, the checkered flag is mine i’ll win this race”.” She smiles at him and he stares.
“Was that a NASCAR reference?” He asks in disbelief.
“Yeah? What of it?” She asks as they start to walk.
“Nothin’.” He says, looking away from her.
She chuckles.
~storytime~
Mccree looks at the girl in absolute disbelief.
“I’m sorry, what?!” He asks as Hanzo tries to process the information he was just given.
“My birth, I have to write a report on it.” She says. “It’s for the lowlife of an ape that calls himself a scientist.” She adds, letting her anger for Winston seep into the conversation.
“Why do I get the feelin you don’t like him much?” Mccree asks.
“Oh I don’t. He’s a selfish asshole who wanted to and did experiments on me as a child. But only during my lessons with him and after he had me kill-” She suddenly stopped, unable to physically say anymore.
Hanzo looks at her, his attention perked at the last thing she said.
“Finish that sentence.” He says but she shakes her head, mouth shut tight. “I order you to tell us what you were saying!” He shouts.
“I can’t! It’s against the rules! If I do tell you then you’ll remember too much when I leave! Once I disappear, all you remember is my code name and that I once existed but everything else goes away! You won’t remember who I am or what I’m doing here! You won’t even remember the things I’ve already told you! And if I break the rules the entire timeline will be broken! I won’t exist.” She says and Mccree puts a hand on Hanzo’s knee.
“Darlin, we better listen to her.” He says, convinced she’s telling the truth.
“Why are you believing a child? She has no proof of any of this!” Hanzo scowls at him.
“You didn’t believe me when I proposed.” Mccree says with a bland and upset face. “Or Genji when he said he forgave you.” He adds, making Hanzo back down.
“Fine. But I won’t believe her until she gives definitive proof.” He says and she shrugs.
“Would this count?” She asks, two purple dragons in her lap growling at the men, summoned from her adrenaline spike.
She hushes them as they glare at Hanzo the most.
“Shinpaishinaide. Kore wa kakodesu. Sore ga otōsandesu. Kare wa tada konran shite imasu.” She says in hushed Japanese to the dragons. (Don't worry. This is the past. That is Otōsan. He is just confused.)
Hanzo is astonished.
“You have dragon spirits.” He says, shaking his head slightly.
“Yes. They appeared two months ago on my first mission.” She says.
“How are you born?” Mccree asks.
“I don’t know. You’ve never talked about it.” She shrugs.
~reality~
“She has dragons?” Jesse asks.
Karru nods.
“Yes. But that’s not even the best part.” She smirks. “But that’s enough for now. I’ll tell you more in a few hours.” She adds, putting her serape on him as he shivers. “Keep ahold ah that for me.” She smiles.
Part 1 Part2 Part3 Part4
Kaaru and the boy are walking through the desert, their car broken down and their destination 15 miles away.
“Where are we going Mcada?” He asks and she hums.
“Well, We’re tryin ta get to Arazonia, which is 15 miles north. Across this desert unfortunately.” She says and he cringes.
“Can I hear more of the story as we walk?” He asks and she smiles a bit.
“Sure thing Jesse.” She says.
~storytime~
Mccree and Hanzo stare at the girl in front of them. They can’t believe their ears! There was no possible way she was one, telling the truth, and two, even possible if it was true.
“I don’t hear any questions.” She says, looking expectantly at them.
“How?” They ask in sync and she nods.
“Okay, not the best question I’ve been asked by the two of you from any point in time but whatever.” She shrugs. “I have a similar ability to Lena’s blinking. But instead of just going back a few moments, I can go back entire years. I collect intel but because I’m currently grounded by you in 2093 I’m technically supposed to use any of my abilities.” She says as Toby grabs her holo-album.
“Why should we believe you?” Hanzo asks as Mccree tries to process he’ll have a daughter in the future.
“Alright alright, better questions already.” She nods as she opens the album and swipes through photos before bringing up one of Mccree and Hanzo with a little girl in a kiddy pool in the backyard of a little house on the treeline. “This was when I was 4. Genji took the picture.” She says.
“Pictures can be faked.” Hanzo huffed.
“Fair point. Hold on. I have something that might help.” She says, digging into her pocket.
“What are you doing?” Hanzo frowns at her.
“Looking for a note you gave me.” She says.
“What good will a note do you?” Mccree asks.
“It has a bunch of your secrets listed on it.” She says and Hanzo rolls his eyes, taking a drink of his coffee.
It takes her a little while but she finds it and Mccree looks at Hanzo worriedly. He simply rolls his eyes again.
“Mccree can’t dance without stepping all over his partners feet.” She says, making him flush.
“Only Reaper knows that. And he can be bribed.” He says looking away.
“Hanzo can’t swim.” She says and Hanzo chokes on his coffee.
“Y-You could have found that out from Genji.” He says insistently.
“Mccree is a Narcolept. Hanzo an Insomniac.” She says, not looking at the note. "I know that one from experience." She says as Mccree looks at Hanzo, starting to believe her.
"Everyone knows that." Hanzo insists.
"Fine, I'll tell you something you don't even know yet. You're wedding is tomorrow because Mccree is going on a 2 month mission to Siberia to track down talon agents left in that part of the world. And he already knows." She says and Mccree looks at her shocked.
"Only Morrison knows that." He says and Hanzo looks at him.
"Why were you keeping that from me? You promised to be honest with me at the beginning of our relationship." Hanzo hisses.
"He planned to tell you tonight but I beat him to it." She shrugs, suddenly sipping from a tea cup.
"Darlin I didn't know what ta do. I was just tryna figure out the right words ta explain myself." Mccree says, pleading with the fire in Hanzo's eyes.
Hanzo looks to the girl with a deep scowl. She knows it well as the teacup disappears and toby barks at him.
"Why are you here?" He insists from her.
"I'm here to write a report on my birth." She says simply, causing them to go into shock again.
~reality~
Jesse looks at Mcada skeptically.
"Time travel? Now that's impossible." He says, causing her to laugh.
"Maybe right now but this story is based in the future." She says as they stop at a little tree to sit under until dark.
"Then how do you know it?" He asks.
"That's another long story entirely." She laughs. "Go ahead and sleep some kid, we're walking all night." She says and he nods, leaning on the tree.
"Goodnight Mcada." He mumbles and she smiles a bit.
"Night, Jesse." She says softly, keeping watch.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
Kaaru jumps out of a window as the bank alarms go off, the alley boy under one arm and a duffle bag of cash under the other.
“You’ve done it now!” She says, running down the street.
“It was a red button what was I supposed to do?” The boy whines, tears in his eyes as she climbs onto a building and starts to run along the roofs.
“Not touch it!” She yells, frustrated with the boy. “We can’t have the cops on us!” She adds as she slides down a fire escape and uses the alley way to get back to the hotel, the cops far behind them.
“It’s 2057 it’s not like it was labeled “alarm”.” The boy cries as she throws him onto the bed and stuffs the duffle bag in the closet.
She huffs and looks at him. He was young and naive. Not the best combination in this day and age.
“How old are you?” She questions and he looks away from her.
She grabs his arm and yanks him to look at her.
“How. Old. Are. You?” She growls at him and he whimpers, his tearstained face puffy and red.
“I’m seven with no last name, no family, and no education besides the biblical school the nuns sent me to.” He says, being stubborn and ornery.
She huffs and looks him over more, his brown eyes staring back at her with a fire of hatred. She lets go of him and folds her arms. He turns away and sniffs, wiping his face sloppily. She sighs and gets a wash cloth and kneels by him.
“I’m going to wash your face, okay?” She says and he frowns at her. “Now don’t give me that. You want to hear the rest of the story right?” She says and he looks up.
“Promise to be gentle?” He asks and she nods.
~storytime~
“What do you mean it had our insignia?” Genji says, dropping his katana.
“She had carved the sigil into the grip of her gun on one side. I didn’t get a good look at the other side.” Hanzo says.
“I need to get a look at it.” He declares and Mccree grabs his forearm.
“Are you nuts Genji?!” He hisses at him and Genji glares.
“She may be a spy sent to kill us.” He says and Hanzo stands.
“Brother, if you approach her, she might just kill you. I doubt Angela will be able to bring you back again.” He says and Genji nods.
“But we need to see that gun.” Genji states.
“No. What you need is someone gullable and stupid.” Mccree says, looking to Junkrat.
“The australian trash man?” Hanzo asks, folding his arms with a brow quirked.
“He ain’t trash. Just misguided and willin’ to do absolutely anythin’ for a good wad of cash.” Mccree says.
“I question your intel Mccree, but I am willing to try it to get that gun.” Hanzo says before the gun is slid to them from where K-M-S-M sits, her eyes open but half lidded with exhaustion.
“Save your money. I’d rather commit seppuku than let him touch me. Or my father’s gun. He handmade it for me and carved my family insignias into it. As well as my real name into the bottom of the mag. Taught me how to shoot. If you want your answers, you look at it and ask me questions. I’ll tell you the answers when we’re back at the base.” She says, shifting. “I’m not supposed to even be here.” She mumbles and Hanzo looks at her.
“Are you in trouble, child?” He asks and she looks away, petting her dog.
“. . . You’ll get your answers at the base.” She says as Toby pants and licks her hand.
Genji gasps, looking at the gun on the ground, the shimada insignia staring up at him. He picks it up and looks at the gun, tracing the carving. Mccree looks at it too.
“It looks like my handy work.” He says, confused and Genji rolls his eyes.
“That’s not possible. Unless you’ve been hiding a daughter from us.” Genji says and Mccree shoves him, taking the gun and pulling out a little piece of wood he was carving on the flight to the mission. “Holy shit. They’re identical.” Genji says as he looks between the two carvings of the insignia.
Mccree turns the gun over in his hand and nearly chokes, staring down at his own deadeye symbol carved into the other side.
“Shimadas! Mccree! Sit your asses down! We’ll be landing soon!” Soldier 76 yells to them, making them sit down and buckle up.
“This don’t make a lick ah sense. She’s got my symbol on here too!” Mccree says.
“She’s not telling us something.” Hanzo says.
When they land K-M-S-M is the first off and the last to enter the lobby with changed clothes and washed hair, the galaxy static as Toby curls up in her lap. Mccree stares at her, confused and upset he hasn’t gotten answers yet. Hanzo brings in cups of coffee.
“She’s upset.” Hanzo says, handing his boyfriend his black coffee.
“No shit. But so am I and I’m gettin’ some goddamn answers.” Mccree says, setting his coffee down; he sat himself down next to her and glares. “I want answers you tye dyed haired bitch.” He says and she sighs.
“What is my name?” She asks and he looks at her.
“What?” He spits at her like poison.
“Read the bottom of the mag aloud. Then I will answer whatever questions you have.” She says and he looks at the bottom of it.
“ ‘Belongs to Karru Mizuki Shimada-Mccree’.” He reads and Hanzo chokes on his coffee as they both look at her. “Who the hell are you?” Jesse says and she looks at them with a blank face.
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m your daughter.” She says and they back away from her.
The boy gasps as Kaaru tucks him into bed.
“Yeah?” She laughs. “Well that’s enough for today. Good night kid.” She smiles.
“Jesse.” The boy says. “My name is Jesse.” He says and she smiles.
“Goodnight Jesse.” She says and turns off the light before going to sleep on the couch.
Part 1 Part 2
Early in the morning at about 7 Karru wakes the dirty alley boy sleeping in her bed. His brown hair is a mess as he slowly wakes up and heads to the bathroom.
“There’s some new clothes in there for you to put on and some shampoo to wash with.” Kaaru says, looking through her bag for clean clothes to wear.
“Thank you Miss Mcada.” The boy yawns, closing the door.
By the time they’re making their way to a café for breakfast, the boy is asking more questions about the story.
“Kid, do you want me to continue or not?” She laughs.
He nods and she thinks.
“Where was I?” She asks.
“Galaxy hair and K-M-S-M’s broken arm.” The boy says and she nods.
“Right.” Kaaru chuckles.
~storytime~
K-M-S-M tears up and looks away from Mccree, his hand still outstretched. He waits patiently as Hanzo retrieves her gun.
“Just gimme yer hand Kiddo. We’ll get ya healed up and ya can go right back to yer little hidey hole of a room.” Mccree says and that hit her hard.
It hit her so hard she took his hand and he pulled her to her feet. Hanzo returns her gun and she’s led to the lift to get them back to the base. K-M-S-M got her arm casted during the flight and then slept off the painkillers with her dog Toby in her lap, her galaxy hair in her face.
“Did ya see her glare?” Mccree chuckles as he sits with Hanzo.
“It terrified me.” He said simply.
Mccree looked at him surprised. Never once had he ever told him that he was scared let alone terrified. It was unusual.
“Hanny, did somethin’ happen?” Mccree asks, unsure what else to ask.
“My father’s glare was a pillow compared to hers.” He says and Genji looks up from sharpening his katana.
“That’s all fine and dandy but that ain’t what I meant.” Mccree says, pulling him closer to help give him enough reassurance to tell the truth.
Hanzo doesn’t say anything for a moment, considering his options at the current moment. For now Mccree didn’t phrase it as an order, thus giving Hanzo an escape route to not tell his boyfriend the terrifying thing he witnessed from the young girl. But Mccree had put his trust into Hanzo over and over again and he kept making reasons for him not to. Lying on the top of the long list.
He considered it some more before realizing he had been staring at the sleeping girl on the opposite side of the plane.
“Han, did something happen between you and the kid?” Mccree asks and Hanzo gulps. “Tell me what happened.” He states and Hanzo sighs, not having a choice do to the tone in his boyfriend’s voice.
“Her gun had the shimada insignia carved into it.” Hanzo says, shock running through Mccree and Genji like a quickly caught fever.
~reality~
“And then?” The boy asked eagerly, his mouth full of fried egg.
Kaaru laughed and waved it away.
“Finish your breakfast. I’ll tell you after we get back to the hotel.” Kaaru smiles at the young boy who’s pouting.
“Can I ask a question about the story?” He asks, trying to get more out of her.
“Depends on what the question is.” She says, sipping her tea.
“Are these people real?” He asks and she smiles at him again.
“They will be.” She says and the boy smiles widely.
He shovels the food into his mouth, trying to hurry to hear the end of the story. Little does he know that his story has only begun.
Part 1
Kaaru huffed as she put her uncleaned gun part down.
“Kid, it was a long time ago.” She said to the dirty little alley boy she saved from a shifty man.
“Pwease Miss Mcada. I wanna know.” He pleads and she sighs.
“Ya really wanna know?” She asks, an eyebrow quirked.
He nods excitedly, sitting on the floor of the hotel room. She nods slowly, starting the story.
~story time~
It was a chilly day in Autumn, roughly two years after Overwatch was recalled and a year since they were made legal once more. Many of the people involved now had opportunities to have lives outside of work but many didn't; though the opportunities were there and available, many of the men and women involved never really needed any of those things. Some even found all the company and life they wanted and needed within their coworkers. Take, for example, Soldier 76 and his undead husband Gabriel Reyes, formerly known as Reaper before Talon was shut down and the agents were reformed. But even their love was expected. People even made bets on it, it was so expected. Including Gabriel’s son, Jesse Mccree, who was adopted at the ripe old age of 13 from an abusive foster home by the newly weds. He always knew they would end up back together.
But there were many more bets made. The most expensive of which made by the Shimada brothers. They mainly were competing with each other to see how far the other would go for their side of the bets. The elder of the two, Hanzo, won. Sheerly because his boyfriend told him which side to bet on.
Now, I know what you’re thinking. Hanzo. Dating? Impossible as it sounds, he made it work. His boyfriend just had to endure 3 break ups, 4 self harm attempts, Hanzo betting his engagement ring against his brother, and 37 drunken nights sobbing his heart out. He only was able to due to his impeccable patience and a whole lotta fuckin whiskey. But nevertheless, Hanzo was grateful. His boyfriend even more so when they finally got their asses in gear and got married. And it only took them 9 tries! After they got Hanzo’s engagement ring back was when the real fun began.
Some late October, early September they were finishing the planning up when a young agent joined the ranks. Her hair hidden in a hoodie and her only companion was a little white dog. She called herself Agent K-M-S-M and her dog was Toby. She was a damage healer; first of the kind. She was odd though, barely letting herself get close to anyone. Especially Hanzo and Mccree, the two unpredicted love birds. She hid herself, not talking to anyone. She was extremely young and solitary. But when she let herself go a little, she was a complete and utter nerd.
It was late December before anyone knew her real name. She had let it slip when she was speaking of her family she left in a town nearby. Hanzo thought it fishy she had a Japanese name meaning Fire. She was getting too close to them and she was weakening. It showed too. Only her father knew what it was like to go soft. But she didn’t speak of him often. Mccree was the hardest working however to get to know and understand her. It wasn’t until the week of Mccree and Hanzo’s wedding that he had a breakthrough.
They had been on a mission in Oasis, Iraq and while K-M-S-M was healing Mercy, she was shot, her gun being thrown from her while she clutched her broken left arm. She was helpless and Mccree, the softhearted idiot he was, ran to protect the two healers. Hanzo was too tied up in melee combat to notice until the cowboy used his Deadeye to wipe out the rest of the people. It confused his opponent enough to kill them thoroughly. But even he wasn’t sure why Mccree used it so quickly.
Once they all grouped up, the first to ask K-M-S-M if she was alright was Mccree. She had hunched herself over in a corner away from them, trying to reset her arm when he offered to help her up.
“Come on kid. Lemme help ya up.” He smiled at her.
“Bug off Mccree. I can get up myself.” She said, in very obvious pain.
“Kid. You’re hurt. Let us help ya.” Mccree tries to reason.
“I said I don’t want your help!” She pulls away from him.
“Just let me help you kid!” He says, shouting.
She whipped around so fast her hood dropped, revealing long locks of hair that was black fading into an alive galaxy that moved with her hair. And her glare put Hanzo’s father’s to shame. She was standing and glaring each one of them down.
“I’m 16. I can make it on my own.” She grits her teeth.
“Who ever said you had to?” Jesse asks and her eyes widen.
~reality~
“What happened next?” The boy asks Kaaru.
She smiles and chuckles.
“It’s late kid. Ask again tomorrow and I might remember some more.” She says before putting him to bed in her bed and going to sleep in the chair for the night.
He cuddles up and goes to sleep quickly, eager for the day ahead.
So, recently I've been mulling over actually starting to post Kaaru's story, starting with her birth, BUT, I have no idea if I should. I would love to share the characters I've created but I'm simply worried that I might now give her enough substance or too much. Kaaru and Jedediah are very complex people and I've put nearly 2 years into their development. I'm just nervous of posting anything. I'm just in need of some positive feedback about it because I dont even know if anyone wants to learn more.
