Spoiler Free Review of Sunrise on the Reaping from someone who just stayed up all night to read it and is now broken emotionally

Suzanne is not fucking around anymore. This book is about so many things but the thing that stuck out most to me was the rage I think dominates this prequel more than any other book in the series.

When the news came out a book about Haymitch was coming after years of fan requests (and a film to be developed in tandem) I’ll admit, I had my doubts.

But what Collins delivers is more brutal a gut punch than I think even the most hard core fans of this series were anticipating. In the wake of political unrest across the US and world wide, in an era of disinformation, she tells the reader clearly to look and think for themselves, and shows the atrocities that can come when we do not.

This book is about anger and injustice and it does not try to convince its reader otherwise. At times you can feel Collins shaking the reader by the shoulders: ‘See?! See what happens when you blindly accept what they tell you? See what you let them take?’.

Fans familiar with Haymitch will not be surprised by a lot of the major beats of this story but the focus on propaganda still leads to some interesting reveals. This is the goriest of Collins series and in many ways I think will be the hardest to adapt, perhaps her own rebellion against the industry that continues to profit off her work and contort her message

I’m only on chapter 3 of ‘sunrise on the reaping’ and I already wanna cry. Suzanne Collins are you trying to hurt me?

Hey, so I've been searching endlessly for a hayffie fic on ao3, but it seems to elude me. If anyone can help me to find it, I'd be really grateful.

The premise was that the rebellion happened not on the third quarter quell, but at the second one. Five/six years later, the rebels won and made a final hunger games for the capitol children, and Haymitch ends up as Effie's mentor.

"Haymitch was furious. Dr. Trinket was a good man"

Snow's granddaughter, who I'm pretty sure was named Cassandra, was also in the games. Effie kills her with a mahogany branch.

After Effie wins, she goes to travel around with her father and then returns to Haymitch

"You did promised to take me on a date"

Then they settle down and have a daughter

It was published somewhere around 2015 and 2022, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere in ao3.

Suzanne collins didn't write sunrise on the reaping to give us haymitch's games...no. She wrote it to remind us that isntead of fangirling over snow cause we saw him as a young and broken boy the only words that he deserves to hear are 'fuck you'. Haymitch was the broken one. Not Katniss, not Snow not anyone...No. Haymitch was the one who suffered the most because of the game. As Lenore Dove would say:

Haymitch I love you like all fire

Something I had to keep reminding myself of because I keep imagining her like she was in Catching Fire-

Wiress was still a kid when she mentored Haymitch- they're like 2 year apart

I feel like we're so used to the idea of the mentors being old enough to be the tributes parents

but so many of them were still babies forced to blame themselves for other babies deaths

OOO I really like that interpretation!!

And you're right! I did make her expression different on purpose!

My reasoning was that Haymitch's memory of her would have been when he was still a child and saw her as an equal partner going through the same trauma as him- so she looks more determined and ready

Unlike all the others who he would remember as children he was meant to protect as an adult and failed

Also I was so surprised you found her so quickly (but I probably shouldn't have been in hindsight lol)

Family Portrait

Haymitch is sitting sullenly in an armchair, leaning forward on his knees. Katniss and Peeta, both looking off and equally upset, are sitting to either side of him. Katniss is up on the left arm of the chair and Peeta's on the floor to the right of it.
Behind them are the despairing faces of all the tributes that Haymitch mentored before them. They're all in their reaping clothes and between the ages of 12 and 18. And, unlike Katniss and Peeta, they're all looking at Haymitch

The only family he has.

I think about Haymitch raising his geese. About how geese are known for being mean and nasty About how often their hissing and bitting is to protect their young
