Personally, I think he's still alive.

When Amanda tried to suffocate him, she was nervous/panicked and she didn't held the plastic wrap long enough to actually suffocate him.

Plus, the wound and position of the chain and head of the dead body doesn't match Adam's.

Furthermore, the state of decomposition of the bodies does not match (in Saw II we can see the bodies of Zep and Adam and the state of decomposition of Adam's body is more advanced than Zep's, which makes no sense because Zep died earlier).

But that's just a headcanon of mine.
