The clouds merge with the sunset, creating a painting of red and orange shades through the window.
Yulia sighs contently, adverting her gaze from the view outside and onto the room she found herself in. It was one she was used to, the familiarity of it making it the closest thing to a home that she had in this world. The plush bed covered in warm blankets, holding her weight as she changed directions to look at a certain wolf beastman.
Jack was taking care of his cacti. He wasn't turned with his back completely to her, but in a sideways position that didn't look all that comfortable. He wanted to make sure she could see the plants too, considerate as usual.
The way he dotted on them with so much care, a fond expression in face, relaxed shoulders and ears twitching slightly, filled her chest with butterflies. Jack was endearing all on his own, his hard working and responsible personality all too charming, so to see him in such a gentle moment only accentuated the feelings she felt.
Yulia knew very well she had fallen head over heels for her friend. How could she not? When he was so attentive to her, helped her in the midst of the confusing situation she found herself in, made sure she wasn't alone and had someone to lean on... and he was just so pretty, it was unfair.
Like at that moment, the warm hues of the sky outside shining into the room and around Jack, enveloping him in colors. The serenity on his face, his tail swaying with the wind, his ears perking up as he turns to look at her, a soft smile on his face she knew she was the only one he'd show it to.
Without thinking, taken by the sheer affection rushing through her body, making her heart race faster, Yulia blurts out the first thing in her mind. "Eu te amo tanto."
It sounds so natural, so right, the words leaving her lips with such certainty. So much so, that it takes her a second to register what exactly she had said and blush from head to toe, hiding her red face with her hands.
How could she just say it like that!? After spending so much time thinking and planning how to confess... How would she ever be able to face him again after that? She wanted the ground to swallow her whole right then and there.
"What?"
Peeking from behind her fingers, Yulia sees Jack looking at her with a confused expression, ears slightly pulled back and head tilted to the side. It's so endearing she almost doesn't register his question.
Oh. Oh right. For a moment, she forgot she had said that in portuguese. She sighs, relieved, but her face stays a persistent pink as she avoids his eyes.
"Nothing, nothing, don't worry about it." She waves it off, willing her voice to stay even.
"You said love, right? You thaught me that word, amor."
Damn the day Jack eagerly asked her to teach him more about her mother tongue, damn it! And damn the way the word amor sounds so appealing coming from his voice!
"A-ah, well." She sttuters, not wanting to lie to him.
There's a beat of silence, then another one. Yulia's mind races a mile per hour as she tries to come up with some believable excuse that doesn't sound super lame.
"Were you talking about the cacti?"
"U-uh?" Taken aback from his intent look, his eyes boring curiously into hers, and inquisitive tone, Yulia answers with the truth. "No... not that I don't like them or anything! They're lovely."
Jack looks pleased with the compliment, smiling a tad wider before his fangs bite onto his lips softly. He comes closer to the bed, looking around his room.
"About the sunset, then?"
"It's very pretty, but..." The trailing off at the end of her phrase answers enough. His eyes examine his room, pausing at the elements that stand out before passing through everything.
He stands before her, making their legs touch from the proximity. Jack is staring at Yulia's face, as if looking for... something. He bends down, creating a shadow over her that wraps the whole moment in a bubble of warmth, just the two of them on it. His ears are perked up, no doubt listening to the lowest of sounds. Yulia gulps on air, wondering if he hears the symphony of the beating of her heart.
His tongue licks over his mouth, a show of nerves, and she's mesmerized, not able to look away. His chest is on eye level with her head, making the other option be to stare at his toned muscles, which she feels would be much more embarrassing.
"Was it... about me?" He suggests in a whisper, abashed by the thought, but burning with eagerness to know.
"You... you're right. I said: I love you so much."
Yulia holds her breath as she waits for his reaction. Her hands tremble slightly as her heart runs wildly, every nerve screaming at her boldness.
Jack's face looks the same, but she can hear a faint whooshing sound coming from behind. Turning her head, she sees his tail wagging from side to side, so hard she wonders if it hurts. She lets a little smile form on her face at this, hope consuming her.
"You seem happy."
He adverts her eyes, a hand going up to scratch the back of his neck, one of his ears twitching up and down. Yulia giggles, the giddness she feels spilling over.
"I am." He mumbles, gaze flickering back at her, anxiously waiting for her reaction. His tails hits her legs at the sides, not slowing down at all.
Yulia lets a smile bloom on her face, lightning up considerably. "Ah, I see... would you like for me to say it again?"
"W-what?" It's his turn to be taken by surprise, fur rising alongside the heat on his skin. Yulia keeps looking at him, watching how it takes his entire willpower to admit it in a straight forward way. "I'd... like that..."
Yulia's shaky hands come in contact with his face, his startled eyes widening, and brings it closer to hers, noses close enough to touch. His hands come to rest on the bed by her sides, keeping him upright. Yulia clears her throat, closing her eyes and touching her forehead with his as she lets the words out, sounding much more like a confession.
"Eu te amo, Jack."
There's something about saying certain things in your mother language that makes them feel more powerful, more intimate, more meaningful. She stores all her overwhelming affection on the three words and hopes he can feel it back, all the feelings she can't articulate.
Jack lets out a sound that sounds like a mix between a groan and a purr, somehow. Yulia can tell he's pleased by the way he pulls back to look at her and braces himself to the arduous task of talking about his feelings.
"Yulia, te amo você muito."
The grin that appears on her face stretches her cheeks from how wide it is. The fact Jack tried to say it back, even with wonky grammar, makes her fall in love all over again, her heart fluttering.
"You're way too endearing, Jack."
Yulia leans in and brings his face closer, brushing their noses in an eskimo kiss that leaves both flustered. There's a blanket of serenity between them, commiting this tender moment in their memories.
He nuzzles his head on Yulia's shoulder, arms coming up her back to hold her close to him. Her hands slide to his hair, the white locks soft to her touch, the occasional strokes to his ears making shivers run through his skin and his tail wag just a bit faster.
"What now?"
"As long as you're smiling... then I'm happy too. I'd like it if you were smiling by my side."
Yulia lets out a laugh, the redundant way of asking her to date him is just like Jack.
"I'm always smiling by your side."
The whiney-like noise of happiness he lets out makes her laugh again, a soft sound that washes over the scene carrying pure delight.
The sun has already set, the stars kissing the dark sky and giving them their blessing. The moon looks over them, it's shine illuminating the room. Yulia glows underneath it, basking in the moment.
With fierce fondness, she thinks she could get used to this.
