Howdy! I don't usually do this, but I decided to post the first two chapters of my fic early! Go ahead and check out the full series if you haven't already!
Trying to look back and add/fix some writing for The Coffee because I've gotten better at characterization.
Probably gonna fix the first chapter since it comes off as preachy and I feel like Sylvia would be more worried about Wander leaving the "happy to be single" club over him screwing up a relationship; she KNOWS those two are obsessed with each other. Also gonna dial back on the whole "Wander being downtrodden" to make him worried about the cut contact instead.
Other stuff to note about the series since I'm probably not gonna go back and rewrite old episodes (at least for a while):
- Female Watchdogs have apparently always existed on the ship, so that whole equality segment is trashed
- Hater's backstory changed a bit; the ID number name he had isn't accurate anymore since NASA chimps were named before launch. I'm keeping the whole "remembering being a chimpanzee" thing but I'm going to make it so that it's a lot blurrier for him and he just can't remember/doesn't like his old name.
- Any attempt at a play on words like a "kerson/keyson" in the first chapter is something I hope people completely disregard because it sucks... Sorry!
- Similar apologies for any preachy bullshit, I've gotta get better at the whole "show don't tell" thing
- Any future installment after The Coffee will be posted all at once instead of chapter-by-chapter because I tried that again for this installment and it's been a disaster.
Thank you for being patient with me! I'll try to get writing out as soon as I can, I've just been dealing with some sudden family deaths/depression. I'll post again soon! ;)

Wander can absolutely pull anyone he wants, from any moral ideology, at any time. The thing is though, he has a very different set of expectations regarding his own love life compared to others.
When it comes to other people's relationships, Wander is absolutely overjoyed to set things up for them! Seeing two people in love is one of the most beautiful things in the galaxy to him, though that's because he buys too much into the "romanticization" of relationships commonly found in the media.
He sees love as this perfect and unbending thing that must always result in a happy ending. He ignores Drakor and Demurra's good advice about communication in favor of yelling out his idea of living happily ever after while expressing the fact they "kinda sorta saved a princess." Wander is completely sold into the idea that romantic love is the ultimate relationship in a person's life.
This might explain why he and Sylvia appear adamant on staying single.
I've noticed that some people confuse Wander being a complex character with being inconsistent; so in order to sum up why someone so insistent on relationships being the solution to everyone's problems doesn't consciously pursue one of his own, I'm gonna put a few bullet points down.
- Wander loves to butt into other people's business but he leaves them alone at the end of the day once he sees they've been helped; he does not drag people with him unless they ask/want to come (Sylvia was alone as a bounty hunter and wanted to learn to be better after she got along with Wander: she chose to stay).
- Wander's lifespan is HUUUUGE! Most of the people he meets are gonna die WAY before he does and that is not something anyone in a romantic relationship wants to deal with.
- Contrary to popular belief, this man does not understand women as well as people think he does. He considers the heart of a lady "a mysterious thing that scientists have wrestled with for years." He plays the stereotypical sexy blonde whenever he decides to crossdress, though this is mostly just to work on villains. He was quick to think that Dominator being a girl was really the only thing that he needed to know on her end of getting her and Hater together (this has an extra layer I'll dive into later). Now I'm not trying to say that he's sexist or anything, that is nowhere even CLOSE to being true. He does, however, have a tendency to frame women as "the love interest" given what he knows about romance. This doesn't work in favor for his OWN love life though, because:
- Wander is really flarping gay. Not even a question. We've only ever seen him flirt with men, it's mostly been with Hater, and he expressed clear disinterest or fear when women hit on him (btw I feel like people don't talk nearly enough about how Janet tried to assault him? And how her moon was made from her body so he's basically her son??? Seriously, flarp Janet. All my homies hate Janet. #2 on my WOY hit list). Considering his pairing habits rely on disney-esc fairytale logic, he might not have that great of an idea on how to set himself up with a guy he isn't looney-tooning the shit out of. (No, I don't think he's aro because he genuinely does get flustered/interested at certain points of the series, but I totally understand if you headcanon him that way).
- He might be worried that a new romantic relationship could overtake the special bond he has with Sylvia, even though this would never happen and his relationship with Sylvia transcends any notion of this because of how special it is. With his logic though, he might feel like finding love would mean replacing his best friend...
That pretty much explains how he values relationships differently. I could continue this rant and go into how he was so obsessed with the idea of Hater dating Dominator by imagining himself in Dominator's place, and how I have tangible proof of that across pretty much half of the entire season, but idk if you guys wanna hear me go on a tangent about skeletondance lol. You know, considering the amount of villains in Wander Over Yonder, having one of the two kill-bots show up in this as a possible "significant antagonist" is a little strange...
Perhaps kill-bots ARE more significant in season three? We do know Wander and Hater get hunted down, after all...
In this cover of “I’m Finally Me” from ZOMBIES 3, Disney TVA's animated villains gather together to sing a power anthem about how good it is to be evil. “Evil As Can Be” features Darcy and King Andrias from Amphibia, Glomgold from DuckTales, Dr. Doofenshmirtz from Phineas and Ferb, and Lord Hater and Killbot 86 from Wander Over Yonder.
Since cops in WOY seem fine with villains wrecking everything, I'm pretty sure they might enforce evil ideologies as well, only really stepping in for civilian crimes or speeding in space.
With this logic I'm betting the Star Force Enforcement Force are corrupt and Hater would be hiding from them because he fell out of villainy.
Maybe he has a bounty placed on his head? Wander managed to be the most wanted person in the galaxy just by helping people out, so...

okay okay SO we all like to have fun and agree that hater catches feelings for wander after my fair Hatey n such.. but when do YOU think wander gets a crush on Hater? Developing strong feelings and such, do you think it’s in a certain episode? (〃･ω･)ﾉ~☆･ﾟ+｡*ﾟ･.+
Honestly? I believe that it probably really cropped up during the time they spent together in the pit, specifically when Hater was singing in his sleep.
Wander had flirted and swooned a bit before that, but it was mostly part of his redemption strategy. He was still slowly developing feelings, to the point where in The Date he had to pass his plan onto Sylvia because he knew he'd get too into it, but The Buddies made it so he was at least able to admit it to himself.
I mean, hearing Hater sing about love and friendship not even a year into his game? That definitely set Wander off!
Still, Wander knew he couldn't take things too far. He wouldn't dare dream of wedging himself into Hater's life once the skeleton was redeemed, but indulging in playing Cupid? That'd curb his little crush and redeem Hater in the end... Right?
I went back to that episode to watch this scene and it isn't even clear if this is a side door or not. This could be (from the bed's perspective) on the left side of his speakers OR it could just be the front door with screwed up alignment-

I can say it is the fic that resembles Hater and Wander’s lore the closest to canon that I’ve ever read, and that is so difficult considering we don’t actually have their backgrounds! Kudos to you!
I just love knowing so much *stuff* can happen between Wander and Hater when theyre both alone together. It started with The Buddies- it took ONE day with Wander for Hater to have literally the gayest dream possible- and to have that happen once more in The Key- ugh there is so much to gush about!
As of now I am in the middle of The Smooch, and I want to type up a proper review of what I have to say eventually- but please know I am enjoying this so much so far!
