Like most students Deuce makes a lot of assumptions about Epel based on his physical appearance, incorrectly presuming that Epel comes from a rich family and that he enjoys being described as cute.
Deuce invites Epel out to a beach for a cathartic scream in Book 5, saying, “It comes off to me like you want to change, but you can’t, so you’re floundering.”
Epel responds with “maybe you’re right,” but it is soon revealed that their stations are mirrored: While Deuce wants to change himself Epel is being forced to against his will, and doesn’t think he should have to adapt to society as Deuce is striving to do.
Deuce reacts with “I always had you pegged as a quiet, timid guy since the day we met…but boy, was I ever wrong.”
Even after Epel confides in Deuce about his situation, however, Deuce says, “I bet nobody in this school has you beat in the cuteness department,” revealing that he probably still doesn’t really understand Epel.
In a vignette where Epel says that he likes their gym outfit Deuce responds, “I would’ve thought you’d prefer that flowy dorm uniform of yours.” Deuce says that they’re “two of a kind,” as he likes the gym uniform as well.
When Epel mentions adding touches like embroidery Deuce is surprised, following with, “I could totally see you rocking some roses,” but Epel is displeased, saying, “I actually don’t like floral patterns…I think roses are far more suited to Heartslabyul than anything.”
Deuce talks about how he would like to customize their uniform with something like a tiger or a dragon, and Epel agrees. Epel mentions tiger and dragon motifs again during White Rabbit Fes, saying that he would like "a dragon- or tiger-themed paintjob" for a blastcycle, "Just to make it really stand out!"
