Different Strokes?

I think I left the teller at the bank genuinely disturbed when I told him that “If I can’t afford it, I just don’t buy it.”  “What about a car? Do you drive a car?” he inquired, his voice toning on the edge of fear.   I told him, “Yeah, I have a vehicle. I bought it used for under $3,000.”  He looked physically pained. “What about if you want to buy some kind of new appliance? Or furniture?” he persisted. I stared at him blankly. “My couch was $5.00 at Goodwill. Like…I just buy shit cheap or I don’t buy it at all. The only thing in my life that I make payments on is my house, my bills, and my insurance, and that’s split five ways because I have housemates.”  The young man looked horrified? Appalled? And somehow also awed?  This guy couldn’t have been much older than me. But it seemed that he’d never even considered the option before of saving up for something to purchase it outright instead of using a credit card. Am I the only person in my general age group (just turned 26) who’s never owned a credit card, and who has forgone basic comforts in order to save up for items so you don’t owe money to anyone, like, ever?

Here’s the thing- you need to take care of yourself. When you don’t want to, when you don’t feel like it, when you don’t feel worth it.

Take care of yourself so you can take care of others. Take care of yourself to take care of others. Take care of yourself because no one else can, or will.

Maybe nothing is awful, but you feel kind of bummed, even if you can’t think of a reason you feel like this? Ask yourself:

Have I eaten lately? In the last 5 hours? Did I eat enough? It doesn’t matter if you’re not hungry, eat anyway.

When’s the last time I saw the sun for more than the time it takes to get to work/school/the mail? These things are shockingly important. It’s not just about vitamin D. You need to remember the outside world exists.

When did I last breathe fresh air? Open a window. Go sit on the sidewalk. Scream in the yard. Fresh air, even polluted city air, is necessary.

When was the last time I moved? Go for a walk. Dance in your living room. Sit upside down, or stomp your feet while sitting on your bed. It’s not about exercise. It’s reminding yourself you have a body. It’s grounding.

Best Advice I’ve Ever Gotten

Are you a stayer or a goer? Figure it out.

There’s no wrong choice, but it is a choice. Don’t waffle in the moment whether you should stick something out, or bail at the first chance.

My friend Cat stays. She likes the stability, likes working things out.

I’m a runner. First whiff of something wrong and I’m gone.

I’ve wished I didn’t have to run away from things. Work, friends, school. I was running away from home long before I recognized that’s what I was doing.

I’ve never regretted running away, though. I’ve always regretting staying too long.

Something I learned today:

The death of joy and whimsy and all things related to happiness is adulthood.

I'm growing up too fast and my (seasonal) depression isn't helping my odds at being hopeful.

If you're a younger teenager, make sure to hold onto this years with an iron grip and squeeze out every bit of joy from it as you can.

You're gonna need it.

Do the thing, eat the food, ask for help, live the experience and never say no to something that sounds cool (unless it's actually dangerous/goes against your beliefs).

Don't shoot yourself in the foot.

Live your life and be as happy as you can, every little piece of joy counts.

“There is only one way to fight, and that’s dirty. Clean gentlemanly fighting will get you nowhere but dead, and fast. Take every cheap shot, every low blow, absolutely kick people when they’re down, and maybe you’ll be the one who walks away.”

I had an interview with a local paper this week about this rock snake I started on the longest street of a nearby city (where I work) because it's bringing people so much joy:

I said something during the interview that the interviewer seemed really shocked by, so in case it's important for anyone else to hear: When asked about the rock snake and some scavenger hunts that I've hosted for adults, I said -

"We don't stop enjoying the things we liked as kids; they just stop being offered to us. And when you're a kid, fun things like art projects and scavenger hunts are always brought to you, so you're not taught to make a habit of seeking them out as and adult."

She said "Wow yeah... life is so stressful... and you don't think to... wow."

So if anyone else needs direct permission to be a whimsical adult child today, I hereby grant it to everyone. ❤️

Encourage each other to open up in the privacy of your own bedroom. You’ll likely realize you share fantasies that you both thought were too taboo. Now you can make some of them happen.
