[Id: The picture is a portrait of Guybrush Threepwood from the Monkey Island Series. He is a man with a lean face with semi-wavy hair pulled back into a pony tail. His features are skeletal and his face is worried. Sunken eye sockets and cheekbone definitions. This portrait has a neon blue plain background]

hello??!!?! excuse me!!! it is monkey island monday y’all!
I would be honored to share with the class, gather round... i suppose??
To be honest, I’m excited to have a new monkey island game come out this year (hopefully!) The first trailer felt like a good sign and the second trailer just kept giving me the same giddy feeling. There’s a lot of talk and suspecting of what the new game is going to contain. I see a lot of people and where their attitudes lie on this new entry. It’s interesting and I think I can understand their skepticism, but I’m just excited.
Seriously, I heard the theme and guybrush’s voice and I couldn’t help but start grinning like an idiot.
side note: sad that this is the last day of Monkey Island appreciation week but, I raise my bottle of grog to next year’s week of Monkey Island! Cheers!
Wowee, can't believe I've made it this far ^^; well, we're all here for the post. Today I wanted to share this. It's my first ever drawing of guybrush way back in 2021. During the quarantine I guess learning about games turned into loving games. The monkey island games were the first video games that I actually wanted to play for myself. I've learned a lot about the games from countless video essays and have fallen more and more in love as I kept playing.
I'm proud to know a really amazing game and see amazing things from it!! Im proud and happy I can give a little appreciation to a really cool series.
Ummmm, this one is a bit of a head scratcher. Lechuck’s just been a really cool villain and he’s been a someone that feels right in his many different forms. But to me, he’s always been a goofy guy to contrast the goofy guy-brush. pfft I know but I think I’ve narrowed it down…
First, HIM. Dunno, I think this felt truly like he cared for Elaine. The introduction of him in the beginning, the sort of longish love confession to her is charming. Honestly and her outright refusal shows how his undying love and persistent Lechuck is to have his way. I like his spirit, it’s nice he continues to have it from game to game.
Second, HIM
Ok, tales Lechuck is because of personal reasons. BUT, pushing aside those reasons, he’s so convincing. It’s nice to see a fresh face of Lechuck, and one not rotting away as well. Look at the big dumb grin, it’s just sooo goofy. It’s a new status and I really got convinced of him being human, well that and being a cool, like able character. and then he stabs me in the heart but we don’t talk about that hehe
Ok I’m thinking we can do this three different ways
Guybrush makes his own. Guybrush does a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle and a real-ass goddamn pirate sword on it. Definitely gold and red highlights on the flag.
I’m thinking like a memento to his time back on melee, so like I’m thinking of the “I beat the swordmaster of melee island” T-shirt.
My personal favorite…. Guybrush glued Murray to a flag and stuck him there as a flag of terror and possible lookout.
As you can tell, I am COMPLETELY serious, deathly if you will. A flag’s gotta mean something. Could his flag mean death??!?
If we open ourselves to mixing in other piratical franchise, I am so down. Our Flag Means Death x Monkey Island??? It’s a goodie, welcome to my Tedtalk on why…
If we have Guybrush as our main man Stede Bonnet, I propose Elaine to being Blackbeard. Izzy is replaced by Lechuck. Guybrush and Elaine get their own dynamic of trying to understand each other’s worlds. Leizzy ( no no that feels so wrong) protests the idea because he’s in love with Elaine!
Side note: I haven’t completely finished OFMD but….. having this with Monkey island means the ending of Chapter 4: The Trail and Execution of Guybrush Threepwood could be played for laughs (or more like I don’t want to be punched in the feels at the end of that game)
Uhhhhhh Largo. I want largo back, seeing as this is a continuation of Lechuck’s Revenge. I would love for him to be the governor or first mate to Lechuck once more… I mean,
“Where you go, on sea or land, you can’t ever hide from Largo Lagrande!”
Guybrush could be back against the wall against some pirates on Scabb and we get approached by Largo himself. He could decked out in riches and surrounded by lackeys.
Day Two: Returning Cast
With the new game announced, that means some of our faves are coming back. Some were announced, others weren’t, so the question now remains: which favorite side character of yours would you like to see in Return to Monkey Island?
I don’t have many gripes with this new version of Guybrush, it’s a new take and I’ll take it! Love that we are still keeping his fashionable blue coat and that it feels like he’s grown up a bit from the angular-ness of his face. Reminds me of curse.
Just the hair… Ive always loved him having that “ocean wavey” hair or a little curl to it.
I can’t argue with the new look… but now I’m conflicted on beanpole guybrush or this little guy !! :]
i mean, it ain’t another season but it’s another start.
Why no, I’m not upset about how OTHER games need a sequel. Nope. Not mad at all. Not in the slightest.
It’s coming back!!! :D
the monkey island fandom:
SCREAMING AND SHAKING AND CRYING MY EYES OUT!!!! Kinda hyped ngl!!!
i’m SCREAMING i’m CRYING i’m in TEARS i BELIEVE in a HIGHER POWER i am GOING TO UPDATE THIS BLOG OCCASIONALLY I GUESS
I think a One Piece Monkey Island Au could be possible. The style and humor could definitely be interesting to see play out. Pirates + More Pirates = An absolute win to me
Guybrush is still a pirate wanted for many smaller crimes like MI2 but also his incredibly unique sword style. He would also still be happily married to Elaine who is now a member of the world government as a marine and governor of Melee or the tri-island area. They live in Melee located maybe in one of the Blues or the grand line before the introduction of the New World.
Side characters like Morgan, Stan, and The Voodoo Lady could also big players in this universe. Morgan admires Guybrush for his admirable swordfighting but also a pirate hunter working for the marines. She could have history connecting to Zorro or connecting towards Nami’s backstory. Stan could be an annoying nuisance who comes and bothers the straw hats with lackluster products and random things due to a change in career, probably wooing over Ussop, Chopper, and Luffy.
Now the voodoo lady could be a bit of a villain or a source of uncertain waters. Her powers could be magic or even the use of a devil fruit, like Basil Hawkins and his voodoo and tarot card based powers. No one knows if she’s on their side, the other side, or a side of her own. She could also be able to see very clear visions of the future like Madam Shirley. She like in the Monkey Island games could stay a mysterious force that looms over all and watches all.
Lechuck’s power could be a devil fruit that allows him to become a zombie but not face the consequences of dying after contact with sunlight. His power could make him still alive but also allow him to become a ghost or spirit at will, like Brook. He still would seek vengeance for the hand of Elaine and be seen as a feared pirate over in the “Caribbean” area of the world and maybe spread towards other nearby islands and their folklore. Not many would be able to have proven him real especially since there would not be many who would live to tell the tale, maybe Guybrush might be the only survivor. Something he might take with great pride i.e. “That Time I Blew Up Lechuck”.
The straw hats could arrive on melee and the island in between looking for treasure hunting purposes but then get roped into the hijinks of Tales. Where they meet the plunderbunny couple in the middle of the action or the moments before.
Either way I could see it, pirates, pirates, and more pirates? Hijinks and humor littered throughout? Sounds like quite the adventure to me!
Come aboard and bring along all your hopes and dreams (and your rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle too)!
Day Four: Monkey Island AU
What’s this? You want to shift outside of canon? You have an idea that wouldn’t normally fit within the structure of the game’s canon? You have a…. gasp! An Alternate Universe?! Share with the fans, what’s an AU you would do with Monkey Island?
MI 1 + 2: Really just the first special edition I would love to just tweak. The art direction and some of the redesigns just have me preferring the older style compared to the new and improve version. And I feel even some of the most simple of movements are not very appealing to watch. (watching Guybrush use the rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle was not as satisfying as the original). Though I’d also say that trying to barter with Stan was kinda a hassle to me. Also give the voice lines and background ambience noises included in the original for the special edition. Please please please god please. I don’t think I have any gripes with Lechuck’s Revenge. These two games were great and it kept my attention and got me interested in the monkey island series, they’re great games and great introductions to games like them.
COMI: The more cartoony style done for the Curse was great and made it feel like a wonderful visually-interactive pirate adventure :). But, I do realize I wish we could have gotten a little more Elaine action and more of her involvement other than Guybrush having to save her. And also have a little more bonding time between Guy and Elaine towards the end. Without it, it makes the ending feel so rushed like, “I’ve saved you. Now I’m married to you.” It would have been nice to have a little back and forth banter between the bride and groom to be. Maybe a little more dialogue like when Guybrush proposed (and maybe have him try to sing and the barbers shut him up for something idk). Having that would make the ending a little less rushed than before
EMI: Oh dear. Really wasn’t a big fame of controls. Arrow keys and function keys were not fun to navigate with or for any item collecting. They were a pain.
The humor was kinda hit or miss depending on the joke or maybe a little reference towards a topical joke at the time. It kinda made me want to skip the dialogue sometimes, even though most of the dialogue is so fitting and great.
MORE GUYBRUSH AND ELAINE AS A HAPPY MARRIED COUPLE MOMENTS. Please please please. Playing Curse and then directly going into Escape feels like their relationship is now kinda on the rocks compared to the ending of Curse, where they seem very much happy and content with each other. Would want to have more cute plunder bunny moments for the soul.
and speaking of guybrush. I’m all for that goofy deep voice guybrush pulls off but it feels weird to have a happily married man and seeing him casually flirt with some of the other characters. Please more plunderbunny.
The randomization of certain tasks did lessen my enjoyment of the game. It made me go, “How the hell was I supposed to figure that out?” instead of making me feel proud to have understood the rules of the puzzle. Like the sushi boats, prosthetic order dial, and Boulder throwing.
Just a big no on the monkey kombat or at least modify it to instead do monkey noises you learn Australian slang to defeat Ozzy Mandrill. Just fix it to get rid of the tedium.
Could have gone through the series without the monkey head being a giant fighting robot and instead maybe just defeating Ozzy but then have him possessed but Lechuck to give him a role in the final battle. Also just put a big giant ‘x’ over the whole Charles L Charles thing, It didn’t make much sense to me. Just straight up Lechuck would be fun.
TOMI: Tales is great, there really isn’t Mapuche i have. The game is great and a nice neat story that combined a lot of what people love about the series. The characters, dialogue, humor, etc. All of that was there and combined to give us such an enjoyable game to a lot of people. I would like to change the controls on Tales but it’s mostly just for inspecting items and combining them for tasks. Maybe have it be like Curse and just drag it from one part to another part of your inventory. Also sometimes using the music to drag Guybrush along was a little uncomfortable. But really don’t think I have much to say other than more plunderbunny. I really don’t think you could have too much of that. You know?
Day Three: Something You Would Change
Monkey Island isn’t without its fair of flaws. Whether glaring issues or something small and trivial, there’s that one thing that if it were up to you, you would change. So pretend for a moment, you have that ability: What would be something in the series you would change?
Guybrush thought it was a good idea to see what it was like being in his psychonautical partner’s shoes for a bit. Nelson Tethers may not be a monkey island character but i couldn’t get guybrush’s attachment to the wildcard Au out of my head.
Day One: Outfit Swap
Guybrush, Elaine and LeChuck have three outfits they rotate through (and Stan and the Voodoo Lady as well if you really think about it). But suppose… they swapped outfits with one another? For today’s prompt, draw Guybrush (or a MI favorite character of yours) in someone else’s outfit!
I preordered Return to Monkey Island for a personal joke. Turns out I was the joke.
As for Todd Howard, I still don't believe that TES: VI is going to come out before the 10th console generation unless it actually does. Even then, I expect little more than Daggerfall with modern graphics and a 3D game engine.
Still waiting for Elder Scrolls Castles to be compatible with a modern Android device.
GAMING RULE 1: NEVER PREORDER
GAMING RULE 2:
scurvy has got to have one of the biggest disease/treatment coolness gaps of all time. like yeah too much time at sea will afflict you with a curse where your body starts unraveling and old wounds come back to haunt you like vengeful ghosts. unless☝️you eat a lemon
Ironically, the Sea of Thieves tall tale is the worst offender, though made by fans.
It's great as a way to lure SoT players into Monkey Island, but they botched it in a few ways; mischaracterisation of Cate Capsize, relying on one of the limited time Adventures for build-up, taking place immediately after Curse but not referencing Demon LeChuck in favour of the most toned down version of his zombie form yet, incredibly tedious movement and not playing around enough with the inherently weird in-universe explanation; it doesn't take place on the real Meleé or Monkey islands and instead in the delusional realm of Guybrush's memories, distorted by his nemesis.
Rare had the chance to give us a world of Guybrush's own desires turned against him by LeChuck and it's just Meleé island but he's a popular has-been, and not a hated has been? Maybe it's so lukewarm because of the demographic of SoT, but come on. We could have had the nightmare pirate LeChuck positioning Guybrush in a much wackier torment nexus.
Sorry for the rant, and don't get me started on the questionable ending of Guybrush apologising to the fake townsfolk.
It's really funny that MI2 predicted Guybrush as obnoxiously stuck in the past, clinging to iconic moments and places that made him famous until everyone got bored with him completely, only for the franchise to become exactly that after Tales. We got the beautifully and artfully made Sea of Thieves DLC, which really does capture the FEEL of the original SoMI but in 3D, but there's nothing original about it, it's literally made TO be a retread, even narratively. Then Return came, and while we have a lot more original content, characters, and places, the entire story still REVOLVES around LeChuck and the Secret. Playing it with my brother was frustrating because while we both grew up with MI3 and MI4 (and the first half of Tales), he only got to briefly play the other games Return puts a LOT of faith in the idea that you will recognize places and events that shouldn't necessarily define Guybrush as a character. This fandom has been full of mi1+mi2 elitists for forever but now it feels like they've snuck into the dev team, too.
