Wizarding World - Blog Posts

The idea of Squibs and the treatment of them in Harry Potter Wizarding World has always interested/sadden me. To treated so poorly by everyone yet never fit in with neither Muggles (because they can see things Muggles cannot and likely know about magic but cannot talk to anyone about and have to lie to everyone) or wizards (who shun & mistreated). Even if a squib in that world studied all the books and knowledge about magical theory and stuff that doesn’t actually require spell casting, even if they would do better at all the tests that their wizard/witch peers do, since squibs cannot cast their opinions and insights are shunned... I really want to play in a Harry Potter tabletop roleplaying game as a Squib for this reason or maybe run one. It’s just so heartbreaking and fascinating to have character like a squib there but it’s so odd that Squibs never get much attention nor development in any canon works. The recent release of Fantastic Beasts hammers down the Squib situation more with implied opinions and behaviour the wizarding world has towards Squibs in that universe.

It bothered me that there were no Squibs allowed in Hogwarts. Fine, I can get that Squibs would not be able to do any wand magic, and would not be able to fly a broomstick. They still apparently possess enough innate magic to see the school and other magically hidden locations. Out of the classes at Hogwarts that the kids take, a Squib could take and benefit from the following classes: History of Magic, Astronomy, Divination, Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, MUGGLE STUDIES, Potions (there will be little foolish wand-waving here), Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, and partially theoretical classes on Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms.

That’s a long list of classes. And some of them are particularly upsetting to me because there’s stuff like History of Magic being left out- that’s their own history they’re being barred from learning. Since Squibs are often forced into the Muggle world, a Squib would make an ideal Muggle Studies teacher and would no doubt be able to teach a more realistic and informative class than someone going off of biased wizarding texts. Squib kids looking into living in the Muggle world would absolutely benefit from learning Muggle studies, especially if they’re from a mainly pureblood family who doesn’t venture out all too often.

And then there’s the rest of them! Arguably you could have a Squib gifted with prescience, and Divination is supposed to be a very accessible branch of magic. Squibs being excellent at taking care of magical plants and animals and making groundbreaking advancements, Squibs working in tandem with each other to breed different magical herbs for potions, Squib potion masters creating all sorts of amazing concoctions. Squibs working with muggleborns and using logic and science to advance magic theoretically, Squibs being huge pro-muggleborn/pro-muggle advocates, Squibs making star charts and Squibs going into the muggle world to use their healing potions in their jobs as nurses and doctors.

Squibs being so completely shut out of magical education was such a sore point for me in the books, especially viewing the treatment of our only prominent Squib- an angry, bitter, glorified janitor often at the mercy of brats with wands. I’m not justifying or endorsing his abusiveness at all, but this was an awful character to use to explore people without magic in a society that bases your worth on it. A lot of time Rowling seems to validate Wizarding prejudices more than she challenges them. While I really enjoy reading the headcanons about Hogwarts being very accessible to people with disabilities, I can’t bring myself to see that as the case with Squibs being treated as they are.

Muggleborn Conspiracy of the Statute of Secrecy

Anyone think how weird it is that none of the Muggleborns question the Statute of Secrecy?

Even if you think Rowling is correct that re-introducing magic to muggles would be a very bad idea there’s always that one special pick-me 11 yr. old who thinks they’ll be the one to change things. Having a special secret that no one knows about and living with a bunch of kids your age and no parents is fun in the short-term, but you can’t tell me these kids didn’t get frustrated with the no magic during the summer rule, the exclusion of their parents from magical events (muggle parents could also be targeted by trigger-happy aurors, so there’s the constant fear that your parents could be obliviated), the muggleborn discrimination, and even just the difference in culture could be jarring.

That’s enough to make any kid frustrated and want to change things. So why don’t they?

I have no ducking clue but I’m gonna find out.

Muggleborns find out about the wizarding world before their first year at Hogwarts on their 11th birthday. Why not earlier?

First, let’s look at it from the angle of moving to a new country vs being a tourist in one. You see the pamphlets and the guidebooks; they all talk about how amazing this place is. The travel agent (aka the Hogwarts professor) that’s been working with you had done all of the hard work for you. In both instances you probably see the destination through rose-tinted glasses in the beginning. But if you’re living there eventually the glasses come off and you start to get opinions about how to make it a better place and more accommodating for you.

Telling Muggleborns earlier gives them time to get used to the new culture they’ve found themselves in, and the lack of school gives the parents more opportunity to explore it too. But by being introduced so close to the beginning of the school year, the introduction to the wizarding world becomes all about school and preparing for that aspect of this new culture. Everything else is secondary to that and it puts both the parents and the child at a disadvantage. It also makes this new world feel more temporary. For example, the difference between dual citizenship vs studying abroad on a temporary student visa (not an exact comparison but you get what I mean right?). All the parents know is that their kid needs to learn how to control their magic and they need to go to magic school to do that. The parents and the kid probably aren’t told what happens after, the kid at least is definitely not thinking about the long-term.

When you tell the kids right before school starts and offer a professor to guide them through the world, the parents don’t exactly get time to adjust and learn with their kid. And before they get the chance to bond as a family over this crazy new world they’ve found themselves in, the kid is off to boarding school and whoops how the fuck are the parents going to explore now without A) magic B) being obliviated by uncaring Aurors C) a convenient magical guide or D) getting past the anti-muggle wards.

Then once the kid comes back from school for the summer, it’s not a family experience anymore: it’s an us vs parents. The parents have missed out on the cultural immersion. The kid gets irritated because not only are they not allowed to do magic during the summer but their parents just seem so ignorant and oblivious now. They keep asking questions about the magical world the kid doesn’t want to talk about it bc they’ll have to explain every other word and it just reminds them that they’re not allowed to do magic did you make friends? mudbloods stick together but they can’t tell their parents about that part bc what if they try to kick up a fuss. The purebloods could kill them and no one would care did you try anything new? someone dosed them with a love potion for a day and was mad when they got upset about it. and how was school? what was the school like? the staircase is a death trap mom. There was a whole corridor sectioned off bc whatever was there could kills us dad. My friend told me you could get sent to the forbidden forest in the dead of night for detention while a unicorn killer was on the loose. I’m scared but I can’t tell you bc they won’t listen to you and if you’re too loud they’ll just obliviate you.

The parents want to help but being away from them has made the child distance themselves from needing their parents help. I also imagine that all of the anti-muggle talk might’ve gotten to them a little bit. Kids aren’t saints, they like to believe that they know better and being surrounded by other kids who were also thinking the same thing did not help. And in this case, where they have something their parents will never have in a world their parents will never be able to enter without them I imagine some of them starting feeling a little superior Hermione. And the thing is they’re right in a way, the parents didn’t get to experience the culture, the discrimination, the people, the context. Muggleborn children themselves are kind of gatekeeping this knowledge to weaponize the parents ignorance for their own benefit. As the parents continuously stay ignorant, the children steadily feel more justified in their belief that they know best. They’re doing the Purebloods job for them.

The Wizarding government is actually very clever for doing this. It’s sick but you can’t deny it’s effectiveness.

If you tell the kid that they have magic earlier, then it gives the muggle parents time to adjust with their child and create a united front. It also gives them time to find other Muggleborn kids and parents experiencing the same thing.

But if you tell them right before they legally have to go to school...the Wizarding World appears like this mystical solution to the Muggleborn parent’s problems after years of unexplained accidental magic. It also has the added benefit of weeding out the more extreme end of the anti-magic parents bc those that didn’t tolerate the accidental magic probably got rid of their kid one way or another so now the Wizarding World doesn’t have to worry about policing those parents or helping that kid from an abusive home! (it’s dark I know but this is a government we’re talking about. You can read worse in the news.) It definitely didn’t catch all of the abusive muggle parents, Harry Potter notwithstanding, but I digress. The parents that did keep their kid could develop a strained relationship with them due to accidental magic and the parents not believing the kids. Then there’s probably the lack of muggle friends due to said accidental magic in one way or another. The kid is feeling freakish but special, alone, scared, and frustrated that no one seems to know how they can do the things they do. The parents were at their wits end when magic came knocking and offered them a solution.

This scenario didn’t happen to every Muggleborn but I imagine there were enough of them going through some variation of this and that’s enough for the Wizarding World.

The Statute of Secrecy stays intact because Muggleborns aren’t introduced into the world early enough to question it beyond the surface level. And by the time they realize what they’ve gotten themselves into, they’ve deluded themselves into thinking things are better this way.

And for the few that grow up still desiring the Statute’s abolishment, what are they going to do as a lone ranger standing against the wealthy pureblood elites? They can’t get anywhere of note without a Pureblood’s backing and breaking the Statute would result in mass chaos, it’s unprofitable, why would they endorse it? Not to mention, in the aftermath of Grindelwald any talk of that would be shut down quick.

Moonlight

So I wrote this for my best friend for time pass

Sirius Black X GN!Reader

Kinda what is in it: You hate Sirius Black ......right?

Moonlight

Sirius is so annoying to you because honestly, why is he so fucking narcissistic, like, dude???? So obnoxious and uncaring of anyone else. Over all, he annoyed you to no end, constantly flirting around and making it seem like it's a privilege to be talking to him. Gods, could he be so annoying. So irritating with his stupid messy hair and stupid grey eyes and stupid pink lips and stupid gaze that seemed to peirce through everything. You hate him, end of discussion.

Or so you thought. One night, you see him at the infirmary sitting beside a bed. He was crying while a hand was in his stupid big palms.

The hand belonging to none other than the famous James Potter.

You had heard what had happened. Apparently, some prank they were planning went wrong, they say it was Black's idea.

You just stood there unmoving and silent while the raven haired boy sniffled.

He was mumbling words you couldn't quite hear.

You stepped a bit closer, still trying to stay out of sight.

You heard a few words, words like : punish, mother, James, hate, Mrs Potter and home.

Then it hit you.

How Sirius' complexion changes the moment someone mentions something about families. Reguals had a very bad complexion too. Always.

They never wanted to go home for the holidays

Sirius was so outgoing and fun that you never realized that whenever he stayed for the holidays or went to the Potters' , it wasn't because he wanted to have fun and fool around.

You remember seeing really dark bruises on Sirius after one holiday but you had just assumed it was another prank.

But it all made sense now.

He was a BLACK.

A member or THE Black family.

Of course.

It didn't take a genius to know that they hated muggleborns.

Or that if anyone wasn't a Slytherine, they wouldn't be worthy for the Black family.

Everything was clicking in place.

Why he was so loud, so annoying, so much of an attention seeker, why he always was upto something.

He was didn't doubt the fact he was the black sheep.

So he stood out more and more, if he couldn't change what they thought, he'd change what he was. So he did everything he could to become what others thought he was.

Sirius was still crying. You realized that when a hard sob wrecked through his body.

All your brain had in it now was how he would have his head down, James' hand pressed to his forehead as he cried in the darkness, how his hair would be veiling his face from all sides, how his pale cheeks would now be red and wet because of crying.

Next think you knew, you had Sirius' head pressing against your front as you hugged his shoulders from behind.

The sobs momentarily stopped, the crying boy overtaken by shock.

Slowly, he looked up. His silver eyes bloodshot and shining in the moonlight that entered through the window.

As he looked up, one more tear fell out and onto his cheek, then another, then another and another until he was sobbing again.

He had now fully gave into the emotions, pressing his head back into your chest.

You kissed his forehead and held him close as the annoying prankster let go and brought down every wall he had up.

A few tears escaped your eyes as you saw the ever so smug and pideful looking boy breaking down before you, in the shining moonlight.

It crushed you.

He deserved so much better.

He deserved to be loved just as much as anyone else.

He cried for a long time while you held him, held him all through it until eventually he fell asleep.

Once he was alseep, you laid his head on James' bed and covered him with a blanket.

This stupid egotistical bastard was never gonna be the same as before to you, you knew that.

Nothing could be done.

No one else had witnessed what happened that night, but little parts of the both of them fell a bit deeper in love with the other, not that either had ever truly admitted being in it. No one knew, but hearts were swayed; no one saw, but lives were changed. Forever.

Do you think the concept of Slytherpuff (Slytherin and Hufflepuff) is adorable or is it just… not your cup of tea?

I’m just curious, that’s all.

Honestly I love all of the Hogwarts house pairings if done well. They all have their own fun dynamics.

My favourite is Slytherclaw because of how similar they are. Slytherpuff is also cute and adorable but I am kind of bored with the whole good x evil paring (or the sun/moon paring or whatever it's called). Give me the Dark Academia pair (Slytherclaw) and the Light Academia pair (Gryffinpuff).

What do you think of how Slytherin was flirting with the other houses and got flirted back?

I can imagine Hufflepuff didn’t realize they flirted with them and thought they were just complementing them.

I think Slytherin just randomly flirts with the other houses to see how they react.

Ravenclaw is either clueless and doesn't get that they were flirting or knows Slytherin is flirting and deliberately acts as if they don't know. If they know Slytherin is trying to get a reaction out of them and would rather let them suffer in silence than anything.

Gryffindor either flirts back to see how Slytherin will react or gets irritated at their constant fake flirtations.

Hufflepuff doesn't get that Slytherin is flirting and ends up flirting back accidentally in a way that makes Slytherin lose their mind.

As a Slytherclaw stan, I believe Slytherin and Ravenclaw don't flirt in public but are really good at it behind the scenes.

One of the things about Harry Potter that always bugged me is the treatment of Ron Weasley in the fandom. Like jeez people hate this man more than Voldy. Ofc everyone has their own opinions but hating one of the most wholesome people is just straight up stupidity. I know, Ron isn't perfect, he has flaws; he is insecure, he can get jealous easily, but being in his brothers and later his friends shadow can really suck. But hey so does Hermione, she gets insecure about her appearance (teeth), she feels jealous too ( whenever Harry outperformed her she was livid) Not only her but Harry as well is insecure and gets jealous (When Ron became prefect). These flaws is what make these characters so real. It makes them human.

Hermione is smart but she is also conceited and isn't very accepting of people less smart or different than her. She is just as flawed as Ron is.

Harry is a sassy lil bitch, he has his moments of judementalness and lack of trust. He too isn't perfect (Harry's inner monologue honestly tells a lot about his cynisim) (also he wished Snape's death upon becoming the new DADA teacher)

So, why Ron? What's so disgusting or cruel about Ron? The same Ron that took Harry as a brother and shared his small room with. The same Ron who broke Harry out from his abusive family's house as a 12 year old. The same Ron that stood on his broken leg and said "if you kill Harry, you have to kill us too" (f u Steve Kolves for giving that to Hermione). The same Ron that made sure Harry got a present on Christmas. The same Ron that took on stunning spells so Harry could practice for the tournament. The same Ron that choose to be by Harry's side when the entire class turned on him. The same Ron who despite his jealousy never made Harry feel any less good and kept all those feelings to himself.

Yes, he had some misteps. He fought with Hermione, but they were young. He fought with her and fought for her. When Snape made a comment on Hermione being a know it all he defended her (f u again Steve Kloves). He vomited slugs for her. He defended her when Malfoy made her teeth grow. He wanted to make sure she was eating. That she was okay.

Ron Weasley in my opinion is the most important part of the trio. He is the bridge that keeps them together. There is no Harry Potter without Ron Weasley

Ps: if Harry ever found out how Ron was treated in the fandom he would have killed everyone.

i don't know who needs to hear this but, on the marauders map cover the whomping willow is spelt 'womping willow'. Repeatedly. Throughout the entire tree area of the movie's map. It's not a one off mistake. It just is.

also in the books it's spelt whomping willow (shoutout to my buddy who found the books online for free)

this knowledge has plagued me, now i hope it plagues you.

i need to improve my view of her but here are some headcanons of my girl

went to hogwarts in 1972 (one year younger than the marauders)

hufflepuff with second house in gryffindor

social butterfly who can make everyone like her, has at least two friends in every house. the ultimate golden retriever energy

extremely persistent, once she sets her mind to something nothing can stop her

hates starting something and not finishing it, for amelia, all work has to be well done and complete

one day she chose red and pink as her favorite colors and decided to make her personality. as a teenager she used to dye her hair with several pink streaks and it became her personal brand

her love language is a mix of affection and bullying, she loves to piss off the people she cares about but she also makes sure to always show her real feelings

she collects everything that has a heart shape

plays the drums

learned a little about muggle culture because she loves their music

loves planning trips with friends and gets sad when they forget in the next day because she was the only one being serious about the idea

loves to spoil susan and take her on trips since the girl really takes her ideas seriously

somebody yap to me about amelia bones !!
