Something that really bothers me about disability activism and representation is how people with gastrointestinal illnesses or disabilities continue to get the short end of the stick and that nobody ever talks about it because it’s “taboo”, which it absolutely shouldn’t be. We can’t be open with people IRL, even in disability spaces, about our conditions because they’ll either view us as disgusting or triggering or they’ll view us as sex objects because of their fetishes. We don’t fare much better in fiction, with GI disability rep being largely allocated to either grossout humor, the author’s barely disguised fetish, or just actual pornography about our conditions.

It sucks because I have a lot of health issues, and I can talk about my chronic pain or my stigmatized mental health conditions with no fear of being shamed, but it feels like w/ my GI issues I’m keeping a dirty secret because that’s how people - including other disabled people - treat these kinds of conditions. People like me shouldn’t be made to feel like we’re outsiders in our own spaces.

(Note 1: This post is not meant to kinkshame. I bring that topic up because unfortunately it IS some of the only rep we get, and we deserve representation that talks about our disability as a disability and not something sexually arousing)

(Note 2: Other disabilities/illnesses are treated this way too. This is just the one I have experience with.)

you know how people talk about seeing in black and white and when things are more complicated or nuanced then they say its grey? yeah i kinda hate that. life is so much more than greyscale.

i like to think about life in rainbow thank you very much.

i dont believe that the scale of right and wrong, good and bad, is linear. people are SO complicated and the scope of what is possible is enormous.

when we talk about complex topics like politics, trauma, ethics, diversity and disability there are countless factors to consider. youre telling me that makes it grey??? 😭 nonono that makes it a unique blend of all the colours of the rainbow depending on the persons entire lifes worth of experiences.

this dont mean you can excuse your actions by saying its complicated, it can be complicated and still be wrong this is just about readjusting grey to colours

anyways when someone does something you disagree with, instead of trying to think in shades of grey, consider the endless amounts of possibilities there are to create a unique painting of colours representing this persons experiences.

think in colour peeps 🌈

hey all, originally this post used the term “deformed” and some people who were born with illnesses that have caused them to look different have asked me and other people to not use that word unless they have an illness that causes such. completely valid so i changed it.

i was not born with an illness that did that, however i have many medical issues that have lead to my body looking different to those around me. i do not know whether that makes me “valid” in using that term and i dont feel comfortable sharing my medical history to try and “prove” as such. so i will no longer be using that term online.

i also want to point out the OR in the first sentence of this post. i am bringing up two different occurrences here, and expanding on the disabled one.

love and kindness i am not offended by any of this 🩷

being unattractive or physically different/disabled DOES NOT equal being morally bad/evil. there is an atrocious amount of ableism that occurs when someone doesn’t look “normal.” and i am so fucking sick of it.

in media it is (almost) always the villains who are different/disabled. and media is a massive part of how people form their world views.

i want to mention arcane for example, because people seem to be confused about what good representation is. people praise the hell out of that show, and for good reason it has great things about it, but people told me it had good disabled representation. so i watched it. and while parts of the disabled representation is good.. almost all physically different/disabled characters are portrayed as bad/evil/villains at some point in their story (or all of it.) and then by the end of the show most of them are dead.

abled people i need you to understand that is not good representation. please look out for these tropes it happens ALL the time.

good representation includes different/disabled characters who are heroes and morally “good” too.

if you make all your villains physically different and none of them are heroes i hate you. i am so sick of this.

i get people telling me im a nihilist sometimes but im really not. i just dont shy away from talking about the “negative” parts of life because i think its an important step towards change.

i dont think we are doomed, nor do i think nothing matters. im angry. im upset. and i want change. theres a difference.

i think its dangerous to loop all angry people into nihilism.

losing yourself in world events is extremely easy right now. reminder that its okay to take a step back and rest. you need to be able to breathe before you can help others to.

Idk who needs to hear this, but “it could always be worse” is a genuinely harmful mindset. And that applies to multiple situations whether it be mental health or physical health. Yes it could be worse, but it could also be significantly better. You deserve to reach out for help before you drown in your issues. No matter if someone drowns in 4 feet of water or 20, they are still just as dead.

no because it just absolutely enrages me when people consider themselves a “freedom fighter” or an “activist” or whatever the fuck you wanna call it.

but then they dont apply that to all minorities.

why is one minority less worthy than the other?

'People are panicking about AI tools the same way they did when the calculator was invented, stop worrying' cannot stress enough the calculator did not forcibly pervade every aspect of our lives, has such a low error rate it's a statistical anomaly when it does happen, isn't built on mass plagiarism, and does not obliterate the fucking environment when you use it. Be so fucking serious right now

THIS THANK YOU.

I don't want to ask AI a question. I don't want AI to write my sentences for me, at all ever. I don't want AI search bars to be the default and I don't want them to be in such a way that I can't opt out. I don't want this kind of AI in my life and there is no such thing as AI art, there is only theft of art from human artists by AI scrapers. I don't want any of this, I hate it. Maybe in a world that isn't driven by tech bro capitalism we can see machines doing all the dangerous inane things so humans can be free to pursue life and creativity. But that's not what's happening right now and I hate it.

i feel like rewording these in some situations could be helpful.

the way that these are often phrased makes them automatically worded negatively: “still” “un-employed” “doesnt” “didnt” it all assists in the effect of the insult, when none of these things are inherently negative or wrong.

this isnt to say you should have to reword these facts. but you can, if you want to start re-scripting the way people see your life, possibly including yourself.

saying just, “i live with my family.” instead of “still” implies it as more of a statement than a complaint. also saying “family” instead of “parents” may help in some situations as it puts you all on the same level, saying parents makes some people think you are being childish, when in fact you are all adults.

when it comes to “unemployed.” its a bit tricky. if you are searching for work, you can easily just switch it out for “im searching for employment.” or if you are studying instead say that. but if you are like me - where neither of the above apply, you can try things like “im working on my health.” or “im trying to discover my passions.” etc.

“doesnt have …” or “didnt do …” can easily be changed to “i chose my health” “i chose a different path” or “it wasnt right for me.” these are all options to switch it from something you failed at, to the thing that you prioritised or can do instead.

Can we stop using "still lives with their parents" or "unemployed" or "doesn't have a drivers license" or "didn't graduate high school" as an insult or evidence that someone is a bad person? Struggling with independence or meeting milestones is not a moral failing.

alright lets get this out of the way.

school bathrooms should be unlocked during school ALWAYS

school children should be allowed to go to the bathroom ALWAYS

school children should NEVER have to ask to go to the bathroom, just tell the teacher that they need to go

schools should NEVER question a child on why they need the bathroom

schools should NEVER make jokes about how often a child uses the bathroom

schools should NEVER get angry at children for using the bathroom

NEVER should a teacher approach a child about their bathroom usage.

if there is a concern or problem with a childs use of the bathrooms, the school should speak to their parent or have a meeting involving the parents and the principle.

if there is misuse of the bathrooms, the school should speak to their parent or have a meeting involving the parents and the principle.

you never know what children could be dealing with, whether they have bladder issues, gi issues, mental health issues or other disabilities. some children may be using the bathroom to hide from bullies, or they may have addiction issues.

it doesnt matter. its shouldnt be the teachers job to police toilet usage. only when there is an issue should limits or supervision be put in place, AFTER meeting with their parents and potentially the student to figure out the reasons for such issues.

i know this is really controversial but im really sick of horror stories from kids like me who dealt with the shit that is school bathrooms

the way that when youre a young adult who is disabled/chronically ill older people often say things like

“just wait until youre my age”

“you young people are so soft now”

“when i was your age i wouldn’t have complained like this”

but when a child is disabled they consider it tragic, what do they think happens to disabled children do they not grow up to be disabled young adults? 😭
