Atheism - Blog Posts

Something I've realized is that the question "who hurt you?" in response to saying you're an atheist is not just very condescending but also reveals something about the person saying it.

Somewhere, in the back of their mind, they acknowledge that abusive people often use religion as a means of enabling their abuse. And, they think this is such a common occurrence that you can always assume somebody who hates religion must have been abused by it.

is it just me or is a lot of christian stuff kind of ominous. like once i saw a sign outside a church or something that said "jesus died on the cross" and i think that would be an incredibly sinister sign without the background knowledge of christianity i have absorbed by growing up in the united states. also look at this fucking ad

Is It Just Me Or Is A Lot Of Christian Stuff Kind Of Ominous. Like Once I Saw A Sign Outside A Church

bro i do not want to see the Wounds of the Scourging. why are you like this

even the cross as a symbol seems pretty weird? "yeah our favorite guy died horribly on this shape one time so now its our favorite shape" fuckin pardon? like i get that its more about the resurrection or whatever but the dying horribly is the part that actually happened on the cross right?

i just think its kind of silly when religious people get all judgy about the mythology of other religions. they are ALL weird calm down. people can believe what they want if its not hurting anyone its literally fine

To people who know the đŸ’«BibleđŸ’«, can you explain to my little atheist brain if, at any point, it is said that God is the nice one.

Because, from what I know of the book, God :

- acted as a f-ing terrorist in Egypt (killed the farm animals, the croos, the water of the Nile, created a plague and Then, killed all the firstborns, like... are they not all also God's creation at the same level than the hebrew ?)

- asked Abraham to sacrifice his son just to see if he would do it (bro WTF ?!)

- destroyed all life except what was on the arch during the big rain/inundation

- created Adam and Eve with reproductive organs and then ban them from their world just because they used them

- impregnate a young girl/woman (first wtf) to have with her a prophet son whose destiny is to be tortured and killed to expiate the sins of humanity (second wtf)

I'm sure there is a lot of other examples but that is all I can think now.

So... is there a moment like at the beginning where it is said that God is the good guy and y'all just accepted it or did you choose them over everything without a clear indication ? If so, why ?!

Like all they seem to do is horrible thing for selfish reason, so please explain how it is the epitome of a good creator ?

Saying "I swear on god" when you are an atheist is the biggest power move I have ever done.

I understand people that believe in a religion. Isn't every sunset that's partially hidden by an average day's clouds proof of the devine?

Do You believe,” the disciple asked the rabbi, “that God created everything for a purpose?

“I do,” replied the rabbi.

“Well,” asked the disciple, “why did God create atheists?”

The rabbi paused before giving an answer, and when he spoke his voice was soft and intense. “Sometimes we who believe, believe too much. We see the cruelty, the suffering, the injustice in the world and we say: ‘This is the will of God.’ We accept what we should not accept. That is when God sends us atheists to remind us that what passes for religion is not always religion. Sometimes what we accept in the name of God is what we should be fighting against in the name of God.“

Chief Rabbi Emeritus [of the United Synagogues of the British Commonwealth] Jonathan Sacks

it's really weird having a first dog be blind and then getting a second who can see...like how was I supposed to be prepared for this.

this creature can perceive when I put the treats up on the high shelf. or when I hide stuff behind my back. I can't fool her!! she's always watching me and she shouldn't have this much knowledge!!!

I walk around at night and I shine my flash light directly into her eyes and I'll just be standing there staring at her weird blue orbs for like 5 seconds until I realize it's probably extremely annoying to her, because she has eyes!! I'll turn on the light in the room and she gruffs and grumbles like ?? oh right!! light wakes you up!! the fuck??

Just saw another "if you hurt people because of your faith you don't really have any faith" post, and wanted to point out once again that this weird thing we do where we pretend that "real" religion is incapable of doing harm isn't doing us any favors. Of course people with "real" faith can hurt people! Christians beat their queer kids because they have real faith that being queer gets you tortured forever after you die, and that beating kids is a 100% god-approved activity! India's beef vigilantes kill their Muslim neighbors because they have real faith that cows are sacred animals that shouldn't be killed!

Stop this No True Scotsman shit! All it does is cede the moral high ground in every situation to religious belief, automatically agreeing that religion makes you a better person, and anything that makes you a worse person can't be religion.

Actually, ex-Christians have earned the right to make fun of Christianity. It comes free with the religious trauma.

I can’t think of nothing more cruel than forcing a woman to gestate the child of a rapist because you believe that your imaginary omnipotent friend will be angry otherwise. It’s barbaric.

Hopefully this isn’t something that happens outside of the internet, but i wanna say that no matter how much you’ve been hurt by religion or religious people, do NOT sexualize women who practice modesty for religious purposes, even if it’s out of spite. I saw this going around online and their excuses are always related to their religious trauma regarding purity culture.

I know they have a grudge and many of us do, but sexualizing them only causes harm and does absolutely nothing to criticize religion. I’ve seen (mostly male) atheists who would edit photos of modest religious women (including hijabis and nuns) to put them in clothing that they would never be comfortable in. The sexualization is misogyny disguised as criticism of religion.

libfems be like: FUCK religion. it is OPPRESSIVE. it HARMS WOMEN. it's NONSENSICAL. how could you believe in your SKY DADDY. ANYONE who believes in religion is stupid and not worth the conversation!

... but not that one. that one's fine! listen to the people who practice it!! (in a conveniently western and privileged area) it's okay when they say women is property because it's cultural.

“Not To Shade Religious People But It’s Kinda Chilling How Some Folks Praise Abraham For Being Willing

“Not to shade religious people but it’s kinda chilling how some folks praise Abraham for being willing to kill Isaac for God to prove his devotion. Like idk about y’all, but if God told me to kill my son i’d kinda be like maybe this isn’t the god for me.”

Religion prioritizes submission, devotion, obedience, blind faith, etc. so it’s obvious what that tale was trying to do. They’re telling the followers that they will be rewarded for putting their god above any other.

“You must submit, but you have to do it willingly (like Abraham), forced submission is the same as no submission.”

They’re portraying this behavior as something to be praised and something to strive for. Abrahamic religions only give the illusion of “choice”. The tale is used to keep the followers in line while making them think that they’re admirable and worthy of praise because they chose to submit.
